hmm i loked at the beb site and im still not sure. Are there any magic users ? I dont want to spend lots of money on something im not sure of I alredy regret Shadowbane and The sims and AC2.
I never played DAoC, but I did play EQ. Currently I'm a Master Scout, a Novice Creature Handler, a Novice Squad Leader and a few other proffssions in SWG. I love this game, but I really do understand why others hate it. Here's my advice:
If you can tolerate some annoying bugs then play now. The bugs that are in the game now are not "show stoppers" for the most part and may not affect you. There are "hotfixes" every other day so more and more bugs disappear daily so that will be less of an issue over time. They are about to add (free of charge) creature mounts, vehicles and player built cities within the next few weeks also. The crafters are progressing and there are now some good items for sale on the bazaar. The are also about to begin unfolding a "storyline" in game to give people reasons to participate in the GCV also. The galaxies are growing in population and skills, so the game is beginning to mature IMO.
If you like PVP then SWG is a good bet. Become an overt Rebel or Imperial then it's PVP city from there on. I'd suggest reading up on some other sites more in depth on PVP in SWG, but I recommend it, it has been loads of fun for me. One of the few things I saw that many people liked across the board about SWG was the PVP.
It will cost ya 50 bucks to try it, but you get a free month. That may help you decide if you want to keep playing.
I have SWG but haven't played DAoC or EQ. Overall the game isn't that good, but it is progressing soon with, as guru said vehicles, player built cities and what not. Here are the ups and downs of the game.
Ups: The games graphics are very good. The planets are huge. A wide amount of professions.
Downs: There are many frustrating bugs. Servers down almost every day at some point. There is massive lag in the cities, i have cable connection and just recently bought a new 2000$ computer and is still bad. This massivley multiplayer game sometimes has a maximum of 2 players in some cities. Your character can only be on one server, so if you know any of your friends that play it, and they picked one of the 20 servers that you can't play on, your screwed. The quests are very lame. There are destroy missions where every mission is the same, you just attack a lair with monsters in it. Then theres delivery missions, i dont know about you but delivering an item to someone isn't what i call "adventure". Then theres missions for the empire, you attack a similar lair but its called something different and instead of monsters its rebels or imperials.
Well now you've seem the ups, and many downs of the game.
I do not really like it. But I would like to disclose that I am not a big Star Wars fan either.
I find the combat system lacking and in the end I think that this would be the thing that would disappoint you the most. Next in line I think would be the random spawns where critters just pop up where they do not seem to belong.
Things MAY get better in time but I'd say that the game is in beta 4 ATM.
BTW, I did beta test the game and along with many others, felt that it was not ready for prime-time for alot of reasons.
I remember sitting in a camp one day during beta. We were having a chat about all the bugs in the game. I made a remark that this game will never be ready until August. We all had a good laugh and everyone agreed. The very next day it was announced that SWG would go live in less than 2 weeks. Realizing that the development team had lost the battle with the producers and that the once great idea of SWG will become just another Anarchy Online, I quit playing that day.
Well I have been a DAOC/Pendragon tester for over two years. I recently quit playing and went to SWG even though I recvieved yet another invitatiob to stay on as a tester for the up and coming Trials of Atlantis expansion. Ine thing you have to remember is first off they are two seperate games. It is difficult to compare fantasy against scifi apples for apples. DAOC was a great game when it was released but a real fast burnout rate as well. I stayed on as long as I had only due to the fact there was nothing else to really play IMO. I have been on SWG for 2 weeks now, have had very few next to no issues like everyone else claims they have and it has honestly been a fun game for me. I am actually challenged by the gameplay and the ability to do so many different things. There is definitely no state of boredom for me as of yet and I have been grinding hard about 8-10 hour days for 2 weeks now. For what DAOC is, it is a decent game but Mythic better hope that TOA is the best thing to hit the market to save them. Horizons and Dragon Empires is due out in the near future and they wil both rival DAOC not to mention WOW as well. I alos think the biggest issue ppl have with SWG as well is it has a decent learning curve to it which doesn't bother me one bit as I feel challenged by it. I am sick of the grind to lvl 50 and then what scenarios. There is no best mmorpg and there never will be. Everyone has there own ideas and opinions on what is good and bad. I have been a gamer since MUD"s and the internet was just BBS boards. I'm an old man if that helps. I have tested more games than i can count over the last fifteen years and one thing I have learned is ignore forums, chats, and gaming communities in general. There full of alot of SHEEPIL, fanboies, and plain cement heads. Take everyon'es opinions with a grain of salt and you will be in better standing. If I were to listen to all the boards and whining about SWG I would have never even bought the game, but I had to find out for myself and It is one of the best games I have played to date both visually and tactically. One man's opinions. Peace
Through your fear I am reborn. My hand of grief can't be ignored. You know my name.... yes yuo know who I am. Frustrating turmoil again and again. I am the spike that drives through your hand. for i am eternal battering ram! Zakk Wylde
Once the game is over, the king and the pawn go back in the same box. ~ Italian proverb
Yah I know you'll like this game... I've played many MMORPGs EQ, DAOC, DA (Dark Ages from Nexus), AC 1 & 2, Shadow Bane and now Star Wars. Out of every MMORPG or MMOG I've played Star Wars takes the gold. The only downfall to the game is you need a power house computer, there minimum requirements will leave you laggy and make the game horid. If you have the recomended your in for one of the greatest games on the net.... well thats all I gota say, If you like the movies, and you love a good game then head on over to SWG cuz its an awsome game with alot of cool people playing it... and havent you always dreamed of being a wookie Jedi... come on I know you have!
Burn out? Yeah I burned out over a year ago but still like the game.
And yes the ol BBS's I remember..never played MUD's though. Just played the old Atari games and those text based games for the TI-994A's ( unless that's what they are I honestly don't know)
Used up almost all of my skill points. And I might add that it does become a grind as does any game I think. I had fun the first few weeks and then it just seemed not to make a big difference as I progressed. Again it may get better but I don't know that I will ever like the game anyway. I guess I like the things that many others don't. ( I love hack and slash as long as there is a reward)
Thanks for the info in this post. Im tryin to decide if I should buy DAoC or SWG. The only thing really holding me back on SWG is the price and that i might not have a computer to run it on. Whats your advice?
Well it will take a bit more 'machine' to run SWG than DAOC. I'd say go look at the minimums on both games and compare. Unless you were going to upgrade anyway, I wouldn't do so just for a game you haven't played yet.
SWG, is IMO more fun than DAoC ever was. I played DAoC for about a year. I enjoyed the game, but in the end it was boring same old. SWG is different in so many ways it's more interesting to play and a lot of fun. It's incredibly diverse. You can have any number of class combinations. It's WAY more social than DAoC as well. It's ultimately up to you, but I say give it a try. If you end up not liking it...think of it as a new 50 dollar FPS game you beat in a week. Then it's not so dissapointing that you spent 50 bucks
Every game should just have a beta to try instead of paying 50 bucks (well 60 for me) on what "could" be a good game. I know many people like swg and many people don't, but they shouldn't find out that way by paying so much money. I personally didn't like SWG. Here's some things i dislike (i know i already said some stuff but over another week i noticed more). The classes are too easy for one. SWG has been out for like 3 weeks and people are already master doctors, this "no level" crap is making me sick. In a couple weeks people will all be master at something and they can't go any further. Plus there are so many bugs, even the actual bugs in the game are bugged, mine are floating in the air. People seem to be blinded by the truth when they say "well the game is going to improve with player cities, vehicles" but by the time that comes out (2004) WoW,EQII,horizons and other games will knock it flat.
I agree with you Rathma. They say SWG will be so much better when vehicles and cities and the space expansion comes out, but they need to fix the crap they have released already. They need to keep things from floating, fix missions, add missions, fix city lag, and have they fixed the transport bug yet? I have quit playing that game. Once they fix those problems, then they can concentrate on the good stuff and by then everyone will have already realize the game is a boring POS. But, like most games, I'm sure the expansion and additions team is bigger than the bug smashing team. So they will release vehicles before all the above problems are fixed, thus adding more bugs and allowing you to not finish a mission even faster.
if you dont wanna pay for it find somebody to hack it then just pay the monthly thing for trial, i play Dark age of camalot and that game rules, swg is good very good if it was not full of bugs and they made it harder alittle, but if you like star wars then its SWG or knights of old rebuplic (RULES ASS) sorry tangent, but if you wait a year or less WoW will blow every game out of water no doubt in my mind, maybe cause i am huge wc fan ever since first one, even played lord of the clans but that game sucked , but wc3 and frozen throne made up for it, if you like star wars try the game , bring it back if you dont like it.
I felt that SWG was horrible. You get master in like a month and then that's it, you can't go any further, it's the easiest game ever. I thought that "no level" crap is horrible. And the planets are plain with nothing interesting. (also where i bought my game i don't think i can take it back)
I agree with both of you. I've come to known that Blizzard makes good games, everyone knows that... When you think of Blizzard, you think of Diablo I/II, Warcraft, etc... all games that won award after award.
I'm just hoping that WoW isn't a dissapointment, just because so many people DO have high hopes for it.
