MMORPG.com loses more credibility?

Still slightly bitter about the IGE ads, I returned to the MMORPG forum to peruse the daily posts...

Then, scrolling down I see an MMORPG 'Sponsored Link' to a 'game' named 'Pimps Lord'.

Well, being the curious type, I followed the link.

Well, this is what I found:

This is a free turn-based strategy game for those who wana beat the crap out of each other, control the streets, collect protection money, dominate a city or country, create gangs and much more!

This game is completely browser based , you dont need to download anything or install anything!

The main basis of the game is to get to the top! When first starting out, scouting is the safest thing to do. Use about 5-10 turns each time. Keep your happiness levels up, or else your units will start to leave you. Buy condoms and have drugs for your hoes; thugs need one gun each and beer; dealers need at least 2 thugs per dealer to protect them; and finally informants need 2 thugs per informant to keep them happy. If all else fails to keep your units happy raise the payroll, see what makes each group happy. Glocks are the best for a starter, when u can afford it go straight up to AK's. Cars can make a difference while attacking or being attacked best car to get, of course, is the BMW 5 series but if u cant afford it go with the next best for you. Making and pushing drugs are a good way to get money, use about 5-10 turns. Join a cartel to get some protection, make sure the cartel pay isn't too high, or you cant build up because all your money is going to the cartel. The last thing to remember is try everything in the game!! If you don't like the city you're in, leave! If you aren't making enough money try other ways to get money (attack someone in your range). There are other ways also to get easy money you just need to find them.

I'm not even going to start describing the ways in which this game is sick. I'm Scottish, and am extremely hard to offend. I must congratulate the makers of this game for doing so completely, something my friends have been trying to do for years.

I'm not saying games like this shouldn't exist, hell, if you want to play it, go play it, but for a reputable site dedicated to MMORPGs, I feel games like this should not be promoted here, no matter how much you need the money, I'm sure blizzard et al will be willing to equal the amount 'pimps lord' pays you.

Oh, to pre-empt some attacks:

Yes, I could just leave and not come back (which I will do unless this problem is rectified)
(and I don't care if I won't be a great loss)

Yes, I could have just ignored the link, but that’s not the point. Displaying the ad suggests MMORPG.com supports the kind of content shown in this game.

And, No, it can't be worth the money to have the otherwise good name of MMORPG.com to be dragged head first through the mud.

Thanks for reading.

Personally I'm more offended by the type of disgusting language a select few will use in MMORPG's.

"Pimp Lords" is not really offensive to me really. Not a game I'd play though.

    I agree.

What worries me is I can just see someone in the US senate who needs a way to get more votes finds out that MMORPG web site is "pimping" a game called PIMPLORDS"

Next thing we will see is an investigation into how corrupt morals are being openly supported on an internet site that (gasp) children can see.

Crap like this is what gives politicians more ammunition to further regulate the gaming industry.

So for goodness sakes take that advertisement off your site.

Have you lost your minds !!!

I would have not thought this was any different than GameSpy, GameSpot, etc, etc showing ads for Grand Theft Auto.  Is it?  However, I do care about what our members think on topics like this.  I guess we can put it to a poll.  Please let us know what you think:

Yeah, this game is an abomination... I mean a game where you kill things! FOR SHAME!

Anyways, I look forward to your theatric departing, troll.

Well for one thing its free.

Can you imagine a mother going up to little Johnny's room and seeing him playiny that.  After she has recovered from the stroke she gets, she asked Where did you find that game.

Johnny says on MMORPG.com.  Its has all kinds of games advertised on their site.

Next thing you know she writes an angry letter to congress.

I may be over reacting but remember the storm caused by Grand theft auto ??

It really isn't much different from any other site that advertises games like "State of Emergency" or "Grand Theft Auto" or "ManHunt".

The only difference I see is the lack of an initial purchase, something that parents can sometimes control. In the end, though, if someone wants to play a game of this nature, they can and will find a way to do so. Whether through this site, another gaming site, google.com, or by a friend's recommendation.

Bottom line is, MMORPG.com isn't contributing to the delinquency of minors, or anything of that nature. They are simply accepting money to let someone use advertising space they have available. This site really ought to remain nuetral territory when it comes to games, and game content.

It's things like the IGE ad that I disagree with. However, MMORPG.com should be the one to decide what they advertise for, not a few of their whiny, loud, easily offended members. And remember, people. MMoRPG.com is simply providing advertising space, they're not to blame for what the companies that use this space do.

Listen Asmodeeus, seven years ago, Ultima Online didn't even have those pathetic "quests" that you refer to or those "professions" of ninja, samurai, necromancer, and paladin. Nor did it have any of the neon crap, or bug mounts. It didn't even have any "combat moves." You turned on attack and jousted with simplistic swings. It was a better game then. if you can't guess why then just uninstall the thing and move along. - Crabby

Number 1. Blizzard's World Of Warcraft was last month was the highest selling PC game. And World of Warcraft - Collectors Edition was the 6th highest selling game... So contrary to your beliefs Blizzard would not pay didly-squat for an advertisment here on MMORPG.com since the dont need any more publicity....

Number 2. You are right that MMORPG.com is reputable Hence the need to be who they are... A site dedicated to MMORPG's and their kin.... True that Pimp Lords has questionable values. But they are not to the point of obscenity.....
-Sure you kill people for money... How is this different from Killing monsters for credits in Other recognized games.
-You can buy guns for your goons... How is this worse than upgrading your armies in wargames
-You can buy condoms and drugs for you prostitutes... Ok this may be offending but atleast it is just brought about as an Idea a thought.. that you must imagine taking place.. While in grand theft auto.. It is Encouraged to grab a prostitute from the street give her some money to replenish your health... WATCH the car shake and buckle and lisn to moans then when it is over run down the ho and take back your money... In contrast Pimp Lords holds no beans against Grand theft and yet GTA was held up amoung other games as pure Genius and greatness incarnate....

I think MMORPG.com has a right to show any and anything in relation to MMORPG's on this site... ofcourse within reason. But this game pimp lords is only offending if you while reading the description of the game are imagining what your prostitutes do or what your goons do... or how it would be to be a pimp....

Final Thought - Pimp Lords may have the worst (morally) in mind... But Pimp Lords has minimal depiction of it. It leaves most of the game up to your imagination... Just look at the screen shots from the game.. It looks alot like a MUD with pictures and input boxes...

I think we should support Pimp Lords. If it becomes popular enough, it could become a veritable black hole for stupidity (what I was hoping for the Matrix Online to do... Let's thank the Wachowskis for ****ing that one up for all of us).

Imagine playing your favorite MMORPG without hearing things like "U faget lol" or actually having to worry about grouping with strangers. Elysium.

    1) I would guess the advertising is free, considering Pimp Lords is a free game? MMORPG likely feels that it should let the public judge what they do and don't want to play - and Pimp Lords, offensive or not, is an option.

    2) If "Little Johnny" is playing Pimp Lords, since there's no initial purchase, perhaps Little Johnny's parents should monitor their child more closely. It's so easy to set up parental controls and whatnot on computers. If you ask me.. computers are FAR more easily monitored than television/movies.

    3) You say you're not easily offended, but then tell the story of how you're offended at a game depicting how (I'm sure) some people actually live. There are pimps, there are condoms, there is money, there are guns. I'm sure somewhere they're put together. Thailand anyone?

    4) The people are fictional (is it a graphical game? No idea), and enemies in Warcraft, EQ, etc.. are also fictional. You kill human NPC's in video games. What's the difference here?

    5) People such as you, who neglect their right to freedom of choice, are the reason that everything gets censored - because some people just can't think "Hmm, Pimp Lords? Maybe I shouldn't read any further. It doesn't sound like something I'd like/agree with."

Its a browser game with no graphics, just reading text doesnt hurt you. If it does hurt you better not watch the evening news.

    MMORPG.com.

I didnt see anywhere a label saying morality, religion or anything else will be encouraged, protected or defiled.  MMORPG is a neutral ground and every MMORPG is welcome, all you say is you are a neutral ground, thereby if a MMORPG is not neutral, maybe there could be a letter like M or XXX beside, but no more.

If In Nominae Satanis make a MMORPG(devils are cools but lazy, angels are evil inquisitors), I certainly hope it will be in the list!  Maybe you could use a banner repeating :  ''THIS IS JUST A GAME!'' and have the offended peoples repeated that line 3 times.  (without a friend of mine making me repeat this is just a game, I would be cold about religions in a MMORPG or RPG, but after repeating that line and hearing others repeating it as well, religions are really fun in the MMORPGs or RPGs genre)

The last thing we want is some fanatical wacko to tell us what is right and wrong.  The next thing Xavon descendants will be telling us is to not play dark elfs or followers of Innoruuk because it offend Christianity.  Hopefully you will not bow to the intolerance that Xavon is showing.

whats so offensive its just a broswer based version of the old BBS game Barren Realms Elite with a new skin

  • AdminAdmin Administrator RarePosts: 5,623

Well, after 24 hours and 60 votes it looks like the results are in.  Over 60% of our members are ok with this ad - especially if it has an added warning.

We have contacted the advertiser and the banner is now labeled with an "adult only" comment.  In the future we will try to look at these things more carefully and ensure that banners that lead to questionable locations are given proper warning.

Thanks for all the feedback and we hope that this works out ok for our community image

Eventhough I may not like that web browser game thats on the mmorpg banner, the I personally think that pimp character is worth making as a 3D model so I can frag him in various first person shooter games. :D

I have no problem with the game (not something I would play), but I think MMORPG.com should advertise REAL MMORPG's. I mean, is it not a bit degrading to advertise a text-based game, about pimps, with a budget smaller than an elementary school boy's lunch money? I dunno about you, but I think that is a bit of a stain on an otherwise exceptional record. After all, when MMORPG.com has it's contests, it doesn't give out beta tests for games like "Pimps Lord" does it? Just something for you all to digest ::::28::

I would have to say that we do an excellent job of keeping our ads in a niche that our members can relate to or use the services of.  When I visit smaller sites I see ads for cell phones, dating sites, mortgage companies, pop-up ads, spy-ware installers, and even on major gaming portals like GameSpot I have seen ads for motor oil and McDonalds.

We mainly try to make sure that our ads are related to gaming - not just MMORPG's - although because our audience is a niche one - you will see MMORPG ads 90% of the time...as that is why we appeal to many of our long time advertising partners.

I know a lot of MMO gamers that play FPS games, RTS games, table-top, MUD, etc.

More than anything we don't want our advertising to annoy you guys or interrupt your use of our site - which is why you won't see pop-up ads or annoying flash fly-outs on this site...ever. image

no pimplord forum here on mmorpg?

I agree its in very poor taste and would only appeal to dorks but thats just my opinion, just because there is an AD here does not mean that mmorpg.com endorses it.

on the website, when signing it up, it wants you to check that "I certify that i am over 18 years old by logging on this site! " I think this, alone, gives my opinion. This site is filled with people under 18. looks worthless to me anyways...

I see the original posters point and those that have followed up to support his/her stance, but hey this is a free world right and mmorpg.com allows all to voice their opinion.  I think it's only fair that mmorpg should allow ALL types of MMO or mass text games a chance to promote their game, it's not as if it's any different to the GTA series?

There have been games about football hooligans, shooting JFK etc etc & most the time they are just looking to get hype & press from the shock factor - which works very well in gaining coverage.  By complaining about the game you're just doing the devs a favour and helping to hype a game with little innovation.
