Upgrade Help

BrachusBrachus Member UncommonPosts: 97

My friend is having issues with his current PC, which I have essentially been applying band aids to for a couple years to keep it going, but he has finally decided to allow me to upgrade it. He has given me a budget of about $500 to upgrade.

Current config:

I don't have the full specs, but it's an early gen Intel Dual Core Extreme CPU

Mobo: EVGA 132-CK-NF78-A1 LGA 775 Nvidia nforce 780i

GPU: EVGA Geforce 9800 GX2

4GB Corsair DDR2 memory

2 500GB Western Digital Hard Drives

Essentially, it's all old and needs to be upgraded. Wish I could give you more specifics, but I don't have it in front of me at the moment. Many parts can be salvaged; case, hard drives, power supply, Optical drive, OS. Like I said, he wants to stay under $500, but upgrade enough to keep it going for a few years. It will primarily be used for gaming and photoshop work.

I was thinking of going with something like:

CPU: I5-2300

Mobo: Asus P8Z68 -V LX

Memory: Corsair 4GB

GPU: Sapphire Radeon 6850

Comes in at about $485. Open to thoughts and suggestions.

What case does he have, and what power supply?  If you replace the motherboard, the Microsoft regards that as a new computer, so you'll probably need a new OS license.

Also, what issues has he been having with it?  Dual GPU video cards are a pain to cool, and also mean using SLI, so that could easily cause issues.

The case is a Velocity Micro Raptor case from a pre-built years ago. I don't recall the exact model of the power supply, but I checked it out about a year ago and it was serviceable, nothing special. I know it's a 1000W PSU from when the build originally had 2 video cards in it. Now it has a single 9800GX2, so the 1000W PSU is definitely overkill.
