And just to touch on something that's been mentioned here in this thread.
The title of the thread is what are you most looking forward to in 2012. Not what MMO. Diablo 3 has every reason to be a selection in this poll. Whether it's a MMO or whether it is supposed to be in the games list, or even whether this thead is in the right forum is not the topic.
Stop hijacking the poll and just give your poll choice or 'other' option that you are looking forward to.
No vote. I'm finding it increasingly difficult to be excited about new releases.
Ken Fisher - Semi retired old fart Network Administrator, now working in Network Security. I don't Forum PVP. If you feel I've attacked you, it was probably by accident. When I don't understand, I ask. Such is not intended as criticism.
Indeed. However, I'm curious what is spurring your pessimism. They're been pretty open about the game mechanics, and what's to be expected. So, unless they're blatently lying, I'd say it's a safe bet to assume that there won't be a gear grind at max level. Perhaps you should should clarify on what you mean by "GW2 is a gear progression MMO", and elaborate a little more as to what cues have given you reason to believe that.
Just for clarification, its not pessimism, its realism.
Leveling from 1-80, you will be upgrading your gear with better stats. Anet has confirmed this. Many people claim that end game in GW2 starts at level 1. Put 2 and 2 together and there you go.
As far as what I consider themepark endgame: what you do after your story is played out and you are at max level. GW2 offers the same content as other mmos at this stage. You grind tokens/currencies/dungeons for item rewards. Most of which are new weapons and armor. They may in fact have the same exact stats you already have. That has yet to be proven one way or the other. However, you will be repeating content for shiny new gear regardless if it is just for looks or more power, epeen, status, personal pride, etc.
That, imo is a gear progression mmo.
Well, by that definition, every MMO that has gear can be considered gear progression, so I don't see why you seem disappointed... unless you just don't like gear. Do you think that GW2 is like WoW? Based on what ArenaNet has told us, it's a fairly different experience. For one, there is no gear progression at the end of the game, in the WoW sense. See, level progression is increasing levels to get more powerful. Gear progression is getting new gear to get more powerful, as defined in the terms of WoW, or any facsimile. Guild Wars 2, on the other hand doesn't have that. Yes, you can get other gear, but it's not more powerful, so it's not progression in the same way. You don't need to gind out more powerful gear for the ability to do other things. Another thing that there are many ways to acquire the gear, not just one boss, in one dungeon that drops it. If people want to spend time getting something that other people don't have, then it's really their choice, it's not like they need to get it or they will die in the next dungeon. That's what I feel defines the difference.

I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.

Fair enough. You're always welcome to start a new thread or send me a personal message, if you would like to continue a civil debate.
Planetside 2, no doubt, kinda sick of the reasons listed here as well. Same grinds, same end game. Guild wars 2 sounds "ok" , but alas after playing the first one for so long, even the changes listed just sound like a rehash expansion. I know, throw the hate, I just don't see the game having long last appeal. Planetside for me was that jump in and have a blast fps/mmo experiance. The new one looks good and it all depends how they handle the cheating, if it goes well I could do that forever. You can jump in for an hour or more and actually have an effect no matter what level/gear you have. In an organized clan nothing is better then seiging bases
Anyways, if I didn't have ps2 I might , might look at diablo if they got rid of the money mall, but doesn't seem that is going to happen so no thnx on that one.
edit: should ask, anyone hear about any good games like DAOC(dark age of camelot) was with the rvr? If so I might do that, even thou that it has the same grind etc, it was a great end game , best seige I ever did in a fantasy setting.
"The monster created isn't by the company that makes the game, it's by the fans that make it something it never was"
There's some other game in the making that look really nice, but I have no idea when they are coming out.
Otherwise I'll be following Mist of Pandaria, I'm really curious if it will be as bad as cataclysm or actually succesful.
Really don't get the Diablo 3 hate. Neither TL2 or PoE are going to stand up to D3, not even combined. Not in sales or production quality. It's like having a choice between a Lambo, a civic, and a F150. Financial obligations aside, you'd probably pick the lambo. Even if you picked something else, you'd have no argument to make for the decision.
My argument, so to speak, for waiting for T2 as opposed to D3 is that I loved Torchlight, it was lighthearted and fun. It was not as focused on a dark forboding evil theme, and I, personally, just like it. I don't have to present a REASON to you (nor does anyone else) for liking one game better than another. I played both Diablo and Diablo 2 LoD online. I enjoyed them both, but NOW, at this stage in my life, I just prefer the "feel" of Torchlight. And....the price doesn't make me sad either, for that matter.
There. Now...if you would just allow people to have their own preferences regardless of your "quality of product arguments," that would be appreciated. I won't rag on you for liking Blizzard products and you don't rag on me for enjoying a Runic product....how's that?
Furthermore....how is it "hate" to prefer one game over another? You have a very strange definition of hatred.
Holy hell?! Why not just change the name of this site to GW2fanbois.com instead. And why the hell is D3 even up there? This poll is clearly a waste of time, and just gives the GW2 fans something to jerk off to.
Why is D3 in this list, its a hack and slash multiplayer game not even close to mmorpg.
IF D3 in list im waiting for Bioshock 3 prolly 100 times better then D3.
But if similar game Torchlight 2 also 100x better game then DFAIL3
Torchlight 2 was already brought to my attention. That was my bad, though I did give a disclaimer about my propensity to overlook games.
I explained Diablo 3 earlier. Though it is not a true MMO, it still shares enough of user-base. After all, Firefall is up there, and I think that D3 has more in common with the other games. Persistance is just one aspect of it. Diablo 3 has several systems that are akin to traditional MMOs, such as structured PvP, auction house, and of course the RPG part of it. To be fair, I asked what game is your # 1, not MMO. Also, the list was constructed based on highly anticipated games of this year on the MMORPG list.
X-com Enemy Unkown. I spent waaaaay too much time undersea with Terror from the Deep, and I love turn-based-strategy. The new dev diary is sweet and I just can't wait to get my hands on the game.
I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil
For me 2012 Gw2 - a must now I've seen the world vs world Tsw - possibly, good pve but needs more pvp for my liking Dominus - possibly, depends how it works and where they site servers Planetside2 - yep
But the games I'm really up for are beyond that - world of darkness, the bethseda mmo and possibly archeage
We dont need casuals in our games!!! Errm... Well we DO need casuals to fund and populate our games - But the games should be all about "hardcore" because: We dont need casuals in our games!!! (repeat ad infinitum)

My number one is Archage for sure, but im looking forward to GW2, going to be a very fun Co-op game

Because it has MMO elements? Because many MMOs *are* hack-n-slash multiplayer games and they share the same audience.
I doubt Bioshock 3 is 100 times better than D3 but yeah, i am waiting of that too.
I played Torchlight .. it is not that good. I will take the Diablo series over it any time any day.
Path of Exile:)
Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.
