Not quite the same as a fanboi or the tattletale Jenuviel mentioned above, the 'I spend more time on the boards then I do in the game' type that acts like they work for the company and drives everyone bananas. They are a demonic combination of fanboi and legal student and will tell people things like 'Support isn't a right, it's a perk' (a direct quote from one on the swtor forums who I would like to internet-punch....and I'm not a violent person).

They populate the tech support / customer support areas and answer every post with a criticism of the player who has the gall to have experienced a problem. They think they're great, and probably feel that they should have a job in community management, and have absolutely no clue how unhelpful their attitude is to everyone concerned.

I think of them as  'Wannabes'.

Well I find the use of Noob annoying, especially now that a ton of people mean Newb

I've seen posts by guys who introduce themselves saying they are a noob (meaning newb) not knowing they are actually insulting themselves ... lol

Sorry, just i started mmo's when it was a choice of meridian 59 or UO .. or muds etc, so i grew up knowing noob as an insult, whereas now it's used as both .. not sure if people just got lazy and remembering the two was just soooo hard.  Maybe someone will make a mod for them hahahah

You can say whatever you want. So can they. That's free speech. Free speech isn't you can say what you want and everyone else has to STFU.

Free speech also doesn't mean you can say whatever you want without facing consequences. A lot of people seem to forget that part of it as well.

The part people forget is you have no right to free speech on privately owned forums.

I constantly laugh my ass off at people on boards all over who start yelling about their "freedom of speech" when they get moderated. Not only do they seem to think the U.S. Constitution covers every country in the world, but they also think it covers private property.

I always end up wishing they'd come to my house, try to speak freely, and see how much good the First Amendment does them when I kick their ass to the curb.

FFS... more emo over analyzing of the 'community'... I thought this was a games site?

It's rampant enough without the staff getting in on the act.

Give it a rest plz? Talk about games, that's what this site is for.

BBS/Forums have changed "a lot" in the last twenty years. So much so that I go through years where I don't read them at all due to how they tend to be. I'll point out that in the early 1990s to mid 1990s the GEnie, Compuserve, Prodigy and even AOL (When AOL was still a DOS based program with a windows "like" interface) were a different place then forums/bbs of today.

Debating or attacking the points made were fine, but attacks against the posters were not and were moderated quickly. Flame wars of 15 to 20 years ago were nothing near like what you see now. I personally still try to debate the points and not insult the poster, though even I fail at it at times and can't resist being caustic at times.

Basically you didn't see the STFU, show me ur tits etc posts at all. Moderators wouldn't allow that sort of thing to go on and you would get quickly banned if you were so rash. Remember back then most of us paid hourly charges to be on any of those services, so it tended to lead to a different atmosphere.

Asskisser. This is universally applied to someone being nice to a dev or a mod. And by nice, I mean "the bare minimum of courtesy." Now, I've been a dev in some form or another since 2001. I have had my ass kissed. It doesn't happen nearly as often as you think, and it makes me uncomfortable when it does.

One challenge with message boards can be understanding what other people are saying.  The written word is a tricky medium within which to convey things like sarcasm, irony, etc.

Case in point--Sanya, does the above mean that you get uncomfortable when someone gives you "the bare minimum of courtesy?"  Why would you feel uncomfortable just because someone is being courteous?  Since my interpretation must be wrong, I suspect you're making two separate points.  First, there are people who unfairly dub others "asskissers" just because they are courteous to mods.  Second, there are actual "asskissers" out there who go way beyond the pale with compliments, etc., and they make you uncomfortable.

I guess I should be in my own category, "People who are slow on the uptake (or think way too hard) to understand posts."  And finally: this discussion reminds me of Mike Reed's list of Flame Warrior categories.

Instigator - The poster who willsay, do, or argue anything just to get a rise out of people.  It may or may not be their own point of view, but they will make it appear as if it is.  Oftentimes sparking intense debate.  Often more intersted in making someone doubt their stance on a subject, or approach a subject from a different perspective.

Games are all about large number sales and short life spans until games are judged by gameplay again this will continue.

Here's an example of one to add The Conspiracy Theorists. One that is very common on these boards.

    The Qualifier:

Lemme just start by saying Im a huge fan and read all the comics and camped out for the movie yadda yadda.... That said, this newest iteration is an abomination to the human race. And it must be true because i love the franchise so much.

I sit on a man's back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to ease his lot by all possible means - except by getting off his back.
