This is how I helped this genre go forward and so can you...

MMORPG experience 11 years.

Overall gaming experience 22 years.

Games played (more than you)

Time spent gaming (more than you)

National and online tournaments competed and ranked among the top (more than you).

I must admit I was lucky and fortunate enough to live in a country where I had a chance to rent and gain access to console games for far cheaper and before the Nintendo came out I was enjoying arcade games in my neighbour. If there was a Nintendo/PSX game out there that existed most likely I've played it. The interesting thing though was how Dreamcast was my last console game I spent $ on.

After I moved to the west and as I matured I found to be quite more picky in what I play. When I finally had access to a PC I saw no reason to buy another console (PS2/xbox etc). This is when I moved toward the online MMORPG type of games that had far more depth, immersion and meaning for me.

Over the last decade I've played most big title MMORPG's as well as tons of F2P MMORPG's. Now back to my topic. The reason how I helped this genre go forward is with the way I spent my $ on it. My $ spent is my voice toward what I want from my MMORPG's and what I want to see in future.

I've been playing WOW on and off after the death of SWG-Pre CU. As a veteran MMORPG gamer I wasn't big fan of WOW and that never changed over the years. I've quit WOW numerous times over the long period of time, and tried out either F2P MMORPG's or very few P2P. Although I must admit WOW deserves the throne of #1 MMORPG for making a themepark design right. High quality level in polish, combat and consistent development and improvement.

My last 2 MMORPG I was hoping to succeed were Aion and DCUO. Aion time spent 2-3 months. DCUO time spent 2-3 months lol.  Was these 2-3 months worthed though? For DCUO definitely, although I would most likely not have bought it unless it was for $35 ($15 discount with free month) but I had a good deal.

So as a MMORPG veteran I'm proud dodging the bullet and avoiding spending $ on MMORPG who failed to deliver a product worthy of the $ they asked for like:

Age of Conant (F2P Anarchy Online was fun thu)

Warhammer Online

Everquest 2

Lord of the Ring Online

Final Fantasy IX (I almost ate the bullet. I changed my mind right before I entered future shop to buy it cuz I'm a huge FF fan and I did play FFXI for a month)

RIFT

SWTOR

EVE (spent $20 on it year before DCUO)

And many other MMORPG's

To sum it up. Overall $ spent in total with subscriptions on other MMORPG's beside WOW over the last 3 years

EVE = 1 month $20 ($15 + $5 for game)

Aion = box + 1 extra month after free time $65

DCUO = $35 (with $15 discount + 3 months of $10 each = $65)

Total $ spent on other MMORPG's over the last 3 years = $150

Future MMORPG's hyped about = none (Arche Age possibly, but highly unlikely unless very good reviews)

So how is your MMORPG budget compared to mine and how proud you are for what you've accomplished with it for the future of this genre? I must admit I'm overall pleased with how the veteran MMORPG community has grown and matured, all these MMORPG's getting what they deserve, asking unreasonable $ for what they can deliver.

Kid thinks he's played a lot of games, then he goes on to say how he hasn't played games much in forever.

    This made me laugh.

Hmmm, well I guess, uhhh, yeah, well maybe uhhhh hmmm.....  ok my what????

If your point is that spending money supports the genre, here's my two cents....no pun intended.

    I purchase about 3 single player games a month = 60 * 3 = 180 USD / month x 12 months = $2,160 USD month per year.

But since we are talking MMO and not single player games.

An average per year about $500 rounded figure in box sales.

I usually have at least two subs per month going $30 x 12 = $360 USD per year + 500 box sales = $860 a year in box sales.

Is that a lot compared to most.   No idea.   What is this thread about/  No idea.

    :)

Amount of disposable income available to spend on MMO's? Apparently more than you.
I've played almost every major P2P in the past 10 years and found fun in every one of them.
Heck, some titles I've paid for up to 4 subs at a time. (EVE & DAOC). I'd like to think the message I've sent over the years is keep making MMO's guys, cause I enjoy playing them.

150$ in 11 years of mmos.

you have played A LOT of VERY crappy mmos my friend. A LOT....

150$ berely covers my WoW subscription for 10 months (of the 3 year i played). and that's just 1 of the 10+ "AAA" mmos i've played int the last 5 years. sometimes subscribing to multiple games at the same time.

wile you may be totally pleased on how little you've spent, let me assure you of something: you have played A LOT OF CRAP GAMES in your mmo experience.

  • Garvon3Garvon3 Member CommonPosts: 2,898

I stopped reading when you said WoW deserves the throne for best WoW clone. I... I just don't get that kind of logic. But yeah, I haven't put a single cent into WoW, or any of the recent clones. They stink of WoW from a mile off so all you need is a trial to write them off entirely. LotRO is the only one I tried, and its the one that disappointed me the most.

I've put money into DAoC, Darkfall, SWG, Eve, and Vanguard.

I think he was trying to say he has spent very little because all the games out now are shit. If we all didn't spend our cash on rubbish things would improve. Obviously he doesn't realise that is what we all do and a lot of people actually like the shit that is peddled to us.
  • AIMonsterAIMonster Member UncommonPosts: 2,059

OP stop trying to toot your own horn.  You didn't help move the genre forward.  Some people may actually enjoy playing the games you didn't purchase.  Explain how not purchasing the games you listed moved the genre forward?  I mean you have DCUO purchased on your list which is in even worse shape with bugs and game design issues than ANY of the games you listed on there (yes, even AoC).  Not to mention hundreds of thousands of people purchased each of the games listed you didn't buy on your list, meaning your overall contribution to "pushing the genre forward" is so small it's almost abyssmal.

My MMORPG experience is 15 years.  (MORE THAN YOU, not counting the 3 years or so of MUD experience before that)

My gaming experience is 22 years.  (Same as you)

Games played (I doubt you have more than me.  You list that you've played almost every game on a Nintendo system and PSX game, but so have I.  I also played a huge variety of PC games, Sega system games, and even the occassional failed console system.  Not to mention I still buy console games and play a huge variety of Steam games - want to compare Steam profiles to the number of games owned and hours spent?)

Time spent gaming (Again, I'm pretty sure I have more than you.  Gaming is pretty much an obsession for me.  I was easily spending 10 hours a day gaming daily for about 16 years straight.  While I don't game nearly as much anymore as I used to I still tend to rack up a lot of hours gaming)

National and online tournaments (I use to compete in local tournaments for 2D Fighting Games for almost 10 years.  I've played in online national tournaments for a few smaller multiplayer games you probably never heard of, but I'll be happy to list them.  You may have more experience than me here, assuming you are telling the truth since you didn't bother to state any of the tournaments you been in)

And you know what... All of this is completely irrelevant.  Gaming for longer doesn't mean you helped pushed the genre forward.  The only way you can say you pushed the genre forward is if you contributed in the development of a game that did so, so unless you were a paid developer (mainly some type of design lead) for Origin Systems, 989 Studios, or Blizzard you can't claim you pushed the genre forward at all.

  • KhaerosKhaeros Member Posts: 452

I just want to know what these tournaments are.

I mean, is he talking about real tournaments?  Or like.. MLG circuit in Wrath, running Beastcleave?

I like this post but would add.

How much of a self important ass is the OP?  More than you.

Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.

who cares about the tournaments, but i like what Magnum said.

you do not help the mmo genre by not paying for AAA games and playing F2P crap (doing so only brings out more F2P crap), but by paying for those games you think are pushing the genre in the right direction.

then you can say "these are the games i'm supporting to help the mmo genre forward".

HAH HAH...I LIKE this one :D!

I also must agree.  As for the OP - he's just trying to toot his own horn - thinks it makes him special or something.  I'm sure MOST of us have stories about how long we've been around, how much we've spent, what games we considered a waste, etc.  The difference being most of us are mature enoughto know that it really doesn't matter ONE bit :D!

I think its an e-peen thread poorly disguised as a message with a point.

    Ooh! Me next! Me next!

    Years playing MMOs: 12

Years of Overall gaming experience: 29½ (Played my first video game, Tennis on Atari 2600, at the age of 2. Eat it, OP!)

Number of games played: More than the OP has probably ever heard of

Favorite era of gaming: 8-bit console era

Owned every console available in NA since the NES and several before then at some point. Yes that includes obscure ones like the TurboGrafX 16, Turbo Duo (still own), JVC X-Eye, Neo Geo, Neo Geo CD, 3D0, Intellivision, Colecovision, and many others.

Owned most hand-helds available in the US since the Game Boy. Including many obscure ones such as the NeoGeo Pocket Color, Turbo Express, and Atari Lynx.

MMOs I've played going down the MMORPG.com game list (not just tried, but actively played at some point): Age of Conan, City of Heroes, City of Villains, Dark Ages, DDO, EQ, EQ2, FF XI, FFXIV, Guild Wars, Mabinogi, Nexus TK, Perfect World, Ragnarok Online, Rift, Runes of Magic, Vanguard, WoW.

MMOs I've tried for a month or less: About the same number, but I dont want to go down the list again.

Longest consecutive subscription to a single game: Final Fantasy XI, 2½ years

Did I forget anything? Do I win a delicious cake? (did Princess Peach "bake" it?)

Man...I feel like a total geek after writing all that. Did the OP really think doing this makes him sound cool?

Either way, I suddenly have the earch to browse ebay for some nice retro games.

These are GAMES we are talking about? I play if I have fun. I have no wish to "accomplish" anything about the "future of the genre". If there are FREE and FUN games, why shouldn't i play?
