I played FFXI for 7 years, and I was hesitant to jump over to FFXIV given all the bad reviews and negative remarks towards the game.
However, with a price tag of 19.99 and a free 30 day trial I figured it was worth my beer money for the weekend.
I joined FFXIV about a week ago and I must say I'm really, really enjoying myself. I feel immersed in the game world - it's easy with how beautiful it is - but I was really impressed by the stability of it. One of the biggest reasons I didn't jump over to 14 was due to my computer not being of 'elite' status anymore. I have 8GB Ram, an ATI Radeon HD 4870, and a E8500 3.2Ghz CPU. But, the game has run fantastic for me and I never even get a hiccup in the framerate playing on the default settings (Which are plenty pretty enough for me).
The gameplay is fun, the story progresses nicely with the leveling you do to get to the next quest. I like the different options for leveling, and I can't overstate the importance of just how the gameworld drags you in.
I feel a sense of FFXI in it already, and with 2.0 coming out making it gear more towards the FFXI crowd, I'm super pumped and happy with my decision.
Things that made 11 great aren't being added into 14... We loved our open world dungeons and our long term parties with friends where we would camp in different and interesting places throughout our leveling experience.
It seems like they are just stream lining this game all the way to dullsville.
I don't want them to add in instances, or raids, or things like that. They need to take the things that made FFXI a sandboxy themepark and continue with many of those elements, not try something different that in reality, is more of the same.
We sure did love open-world dungeons, but those "long-term" xp parties were about as repetitive as a grind can get. Stand in the same spot for hours, doing the same thing, on the same mob, trying to get "chains" by doing it as fast as you can...
Or worse - camping NMs, standing in the same spot, waiting for a mob to pop, for hours, in the company of others doing the same thing, just praying...
It all seemed pretty epic back in 2003 - it was my first MMO after UO - but when you take off the rose colored goggles a lot of it was just a thinly disguised super-grind.
I would love to see elements of XI mixed with the modernity of WoW. Not so much as to make it a "WoW clone" but just a more modern approach that doesn't expect it's players to have 4 hours straight to get some decent XP or have a tiny chance to kill a rare mob.
------ Played - UO, FFXI, WAR, WoW, EVE Currently - Bored.
This game will need some sort of f2p/free trial option and soon....ITs one of those games that feels like they don't want me to play (not without dropping serious cash first anyway).......I'm sorry there are just too many other free options out there to waste time and money on something like this.
