How is controll not a support skill, if it allows you to prevent ennemies from doing damage? Its controll that has partly replaced healing in this game.
Necromancers are very low on your lists, but they could have the best oldfashioned healing output combined with the removal of conditions, they are a very versatile support class, i would place them a lot higher on your list
Control is in a class of it's own really. You can lump it with support if you want, but I leave it out for this. Necro is really high up there in control, if we were to make a seperate list for control they'd be up there in second if not the top profession. For the sake of this list support is providing some benefit to your allies in some way (healing, condition removal, buffs), while control is dealing specifically with weakening, kiting, CCing, or absorbing damage from enemies.
Best Old Fashioned Healing Output? What do you mean by that? They have two ally Heal Over Time Spells, one restricted to a weapon. That's lower than most professions. Their lifetaps are self only so it doesn't really qualify as support and again fits more in personal survivability which would fall more in the "Control" class for being able to take more hits than most. The main reason they aren't below Thief is that they have several AoE condition removals and a few more support skills like Spectral Wall (which also doubles as a control skill).
Wondering why they are below a Warrior? Well, the Warhorn provides a lot of support and their banners and shouts provide lots of powerful support if they choose to take them. They also have an elite skill dedicated to support. Everything above Warrior pretty much provides support in almost all setups even if it's minor where the Necro and Warrior have to trade off control and damage for support.
This is true, but as Arenanet did I lumped them into two different categories for the list. That way instead of just classing things as damage and support we get a soft trinity setup of damage, control, and support even though support and control are essentially the same thing I choose to categorize them differently.
Quick breakdown:
Support - (Anything dealing with enhancing allies) - Buffs, heals, condition removals, group mobility, group stealth, cross profession combo starters.
Control - (Anything dealing with controlling enemies) - Debuffing, tanking and damage absorption, crowd control effects, kiting, zoning (launches and walls), interrupts.
First off - I'll say I really love playing the support role and I was happy to hear Guild wars did away with the holy trinity system.
Now that's out of the way, I'm curious what you guys feel will be more support style classes. I know *most* classes in GW can be built to be support, but I think some classes are better at support than others.
My thoughts:
Mesmer, Guardian, Engineers and Necromancers will be more support/utility.
Warrior, Ele, thiefs and Rangers will be more the thumpers of the group....
Thoughts? Am I way off base? What's your opinions?
/discuss
with my pet running around rezzing ppl and my healing spirit I wouldn't say rangers wont be up on the support.. especially since compassion is onee of the bonuses for beast mastery. Ele also are huge support, what is it.. in frost and earth? I dunno I know frost is one of the support elements.
4. Ranger (While the Ranger doesn't have many support skills, their spirits provide some powerful support and many pets come with support abilities, some even get two especially when you take into account traits for specific pets)
I think you are missing some very key ranger support abilities. I listed a few major ones in my previous post.
As a support...you may have to soak up damage if the mobs are after you...the control player can only do so much while waiting for cooldowns, meaning you really should switch out to a more defensive weapon until the mobs move to someone else. Seeing as there are no taunts or ways of holding a mob onto you, they can switch at anytime and attack someone. The reason they switch is unknown, it could be because they hate healing skills, it could be pure random, it could be because they hate conditions being placed on them and want to take that player out first.
I think everyone should learn to play a defensive role if this happens as well as a support or damage to coincide with their defensive weapon set. Now defensive is not about taking hits as you could knockdown, knockback, teleport back, stun, all sorts of things to keep your distance, but it should be considered a part of your skills in case you end up getting the mob on you instead of who you think the control player should be doing.
I got the impression that the lack of pure support was as much a part of the doing away with the trinity as the lack of pure healing and pure tanking. We *all* have to do it *all* now, isn't that the idea?
I think, honestly, that some folks will be much more attached to the trinity system than they feel they were. I am looking forward to the lack of it, but there are going to be many people I think that may not be so happy when they get their teeth into the game.
I swear one day i will make a toon to look like a bard. So far it seems the thief may be closer... :P

You all have to support or you will not come far if you only support your no good in GW2 and these are not my words this is comming from arenanet developer themselfs.
And if you look up all the GW2 press beta footage you see whole group have contribute in healing-tanking and dps you have to work together accomplish things, the passive ill support attitude bring you only nothing at all, and you will be KICKED OUT of a group before you know it:P

i read the OP but didn't read the replys.
i think ele, engineer, necro, and mesmer, will have the best support in game in that order.
I've got the straight edge.
