Uhh... it's just that asking that kind of question on mmorpg.com where most possibly lots of people are playing MMORPGs at 1024x768 so automatically we're all at 1024x768 so it's obvious most of us will vote 1024x768. :P
If you check the real internet statistics, too many people are still at 800x600! The majority of the world had bought PCs years ago, still stuck with old PCs.
So I guess to defend your opinion, as long as the webpage has content oriented to new generation computers, such as a gaming site, or talks about latest technology and stuff like that, you could convince him/her that who cares if someone with a 800x600 resolution visits your page, the content of the page won't even help them.
But if your project is about making a commercial business webpage... then forget it. Most businesses still use old PCs running Windows98/ME at 800x600 resolution. And that's one of the big reasons why people want 800x600 optimized webpages.
