Social MMOs (recommendations)

I believe I have come to put my finger on what types of MMOs I enjoy ever since I started with UO many moons ago and why I am generally dissatisfied  with the averge WoW-clone MMO:  I enjoy games with some type of social mechanic.

The MMOs I have enjoyed have been UO, Shadowbane, SWG, Lineage2 and DDO.  While there is a theme of hard-core pvp to my list of games, DDO was purely PVE and I liked it because of the fact that you needed a full group with a lot of cooperation in order to play the quests.  I was also in love with the NWN series due to the fact that I am a creative person, I liked the ability to develop my own mods and have people join them; and I generally like role play--when different characters meet and work together.

On the other hand, MMOs where players can pretty much be asocial and solo the game with no need to even talk to each other, no need help each other nor can't even be antagonistic to each other (no pvp or griefing), I generally get bored of and feel isolated in.  I have a guild I belong to, but if there is no mechanic in the game that helps me to meet new people, I generally stop enjoying the game early on.

So, whether a game has good PVP, some type of player-based politics or just some underlying mechanic to promote interaction between players (whether coopeatively or antagonistically),  I am ultimately looking for some game suggestions that  have these elements.  But, Id prefer combat oriented games as opposed to something purely social (e.g., Second Life).

Any recommendations of some independent games that aren't buggy that have a good social mechanic would be greatly welcome.  Thanks.

Sadly...there isn't really any to recommend post -WoW that I have tried personally. I'd say if any, Vanguard: Saga of Heroes is your best bet.

Wakfu, I think, is fairly social.   Annoyingly so at times...  :)    And you'll see the tragedy of the commons enacted every day...
