It really depends on how aware  you are in what you are doing.  If you spend alot of time in torrent or porn sites, I'd recommend one of the heftier AV's like Norton or BitDefender in conjunction with an active-shield anti-spyware program like Spybot S&D or Malewarebytes.  If you are aware and competant, I'd recommend WebRoot or Kaspersky.

As far as ratings, the top 4 are BitDefender, Norton, Kaspersky or Webroot (in no particular order).

As far as free, MSE, AVG or AVAST are good.

I personally use WebRoot because it's insanely lightweight.  It's less than 15mb installed and runs with almost no resources but you need to be connected to the iNet for full protection as it keeps the definitions in the cloud.

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials and so far (a year) so good. Just because I'm paranoid I sometimes use another program to double, triple check if everything is indeed alright but nope, no problem on my end.

    My personal favorite is AVG...

Ditto. Have had Bit defender and Malwarebytes, damn good.

All I use now is MSE, as I dont go watch every video about every little thing, click on every link, or open every e-mail (spaminals) anymore, my surfing habits dont, put me at a high risk.

And security habits prolly help also, changing passwords, accounts, and having a clone of my OS w/configurations, which I use to clean install. every so often.

I dont use shadow copy's/system restore, or home group, it's all turned off correctly.

Can't help but think that W7 may play a factor also.

Been nearly two years since I've had  an issue, which was on XP, from an email of an infected friend.

MSE by far the quietest. Avast is ok and avg is hella annoying.

I've use AVG for years and found it to be very effective even if you are visiting questionable sites and using torrents ;) I see no reason to pay for an anti-virus program when AVG works very well. Incidentally AVG is only free to home users. They make their money selling it to companies which is how they are able to make such a good program and keep it continually updated.

    Common Sense™

On a serious note, be sure to pick up a registry cleaner of your preference(I prefer "Registry Cleaner"), CCleaner for make sure things that you delete stay deleted, and a collection of specific Anti-"Insert threat".

The truth on the other hand, is that knowledge is the best way to protect yourself. After all, which sounds safer, being able to defend yourself, or asking something your don't understand in the slightest to protect your from the unknown. It's your call.

Paid avg suite is good, very good firewall.

Now you could get a bunch of free stuff like zone alarm and spybot but for a user wanting a 1 program solution the paid version of avg is very good.

Avast can be annoying with false positives
I'm wary of the Microsoft av and firewall as they will be prime targets for hackers

The worst I've used was McAfee that came preinstalled absolutely ground machine to a halt

I'd been using AVG for years. Finally I realized it was just too much of a resource hog. I switched to Avast which works just great. I have not had any false positives with Avast, to my knowledge anyway. I also practice good internet surfing habits which really aids in the prevention of contracting viruses.

No anti virus programme is good or actully work at all, and norton is actully one of the worse you can get too,

i dont use any anti virus programme and for yrs i never need hacked or gained viruses, Main reason is i dont goto unsafe sites

and i dont download torrents on my main computer but do it all on a secondary computer i dont care much about,

You could also install all your important programmes and put important files on a external drive and unplug it when you dont use them.

How do you know if you dont have a program to verify you dont? :)
a keyloger isnt going make enough noise to be uncovered.

Personal challenge: Run spybot once, see how much malware you have, repost?

As most have said the best way to keep your PC infection free is to practic safe browsing/downloading.  However when I'm looking for any freeware programs I like to use http://www.techsupportalert.com/ because they test out the software they recommend on their site and give fairly unbiased opinions based on their findings, and the site stays fairly up-to-date.

Avira free version here; tried premium and I found it really annoying, no complaints so far on the free version though.

Windows Defender is performing a regular scan every now and then, all seems fine, been using Avira for years now.

Tried AVG, Avast, Zone Alarm, some others, they all were to hard to understand or to annoying, mostly both.

The only unobtrusive one I found which gets good remarks is Panda Clouad Antivirus. Unfortunatly it stoppes workign correctly after a while on my PC. So I don't have a virusscanner at all. Can't be to bothered, I ran without one for YEARS. Only once had a real issue and had to reinstall Windows because of a nasty virus.

AVG is considerable good, only downside is that it likes to consume a lot of your computer memory. But, it is still a good choice. There is also Kaspersky, an even better choice.

If you want free, I hear Microsoft Security Essentials is actually very good.

As for pay programs, Kaspersky and Avira I've read are among the best. Kaspersky gets incredibly annoying once your "subscription" is nearly up, though. Throws popups asking you to resubscribe like every 5 minutes when its nearly up. I refuse to buy Kaspersky anymore because of this.

Free version of Avast is really good, been using it since early XP 64beta as it was the on AV software to work o a 64bit platform LOL..

Microsoft security essentials is also half decent..

I really dont recommend running without AV software like the guy is above LOL, a modern day virus is not usually designed to disrupt or brake your system, they are designed to hide in the background and steal all your information so you would probally never know anything is wrong until your bank account is empty..
