I really don't get the mount hate ...

EcocesEcoces Member UncommonPosts: 879

i was reading a post on another GW2 forum and it just seems there is a lot of hate for anyone who wants mounts added to the game, and really i just don't get it. I mean i understand that "fanbois" will take a developers word as a commandment and rationalize any decision as being "best for the game".

but no mounts? really? this is gamebreaking? every major MMORPG since EQ1 has had mounts (either from the start or added later) and it didn't break that game.

so tell me how exactly mounts would ruin GW2, even with fast travel and all that some people just enjoy seeing their character on a armored horse or some other mythical beast.

its just not gamebreaking and hell i consider having mounts a basic to any MMORPG.

Yea I kinda hate the fact they don't have mounts..silly IMO that they do not.

Guild Wars 1 doesn't have mounts.

Honestly, the way the game implemented the teleportation, mounts are unnecessary.  Mounts take up a LOT of space.

Think back to WoW and people who'd figure out how to block quest givers and the like with mounts.  It only takes 1 to ruin it for everyone.

If you've read what the devs have said about the reason there won't be mounts than you would understand why. There are those gateways every where, you'll be able to fast travel anywhere you need to, yes you'll do a little bit of running especially when you first enter the game but afterwards you'll be able to get to a place very quickly.

At this point I could care less.  I will have to see how I feel when I actually play the game.  If I'm traveling on foot so much that it feels like a chore just to get somewhere, then I might have to bitch then.  Right now, though... It seems like it won't be a problem.

Mounts will be a cash shop item....expensive as hell too, lol

Aethetics are one thing. Remember there is a cost to implement mounts, and I don't think it's worth the money and time to implement just to look cool.

As far as functionality goes, you consider mounts basic to mmorpgs because you have only ever played mmorpgs that have mechanics built in to waste your time. Mounts are valuable because they mitigate that.

If GW2 manages (as GW1 did) to not require lots of retarded travelling, then mounts are unnecessary.

Anything unnecessary that costs money to provide is a waste of money.

If it turns out that there is unexpectedly high travel times, I will want a mount. If not, then I hope they don't implement them.

It is not that its gamebreaking.  I just don't see the value in wasting developer time to create mounts and animations when everyone can fast travel everywhere.  Developer time is better spent elsewhere like bug crushing or implementing new DE's.

Perhpas in another expansion pack they can implement them as a cosmetic thing for us and then add more special ones in the cash shop.

Only thing i'm against is flying mounts.

I'm sure we'll get mounts at some point in the future as another activity to work towards and keep us playing.

They should have vanity item mounts that actually slow your movement speed. I'd quite like to ride one of those ox things (whatever they are actually called).

    1) not having mounts is not game breaking. its a personal preference of yours, not something that doesnt work correctly

    2) who cares really? Lets just say for example if Aion had been in EQs place, and most games made after it also had wings allowing you to fly around. Would you be throwing a fit every time a game came out that didnt give you winged characters?

    3) again who cares. wether its on a mount or not, youre still just running around. ffs you people act like they cut off your legs and said youre not allowed to move at all. its simply an aesthetic that some people prefer but that certainly doesnt mean everyone else wants it too, and it certainly is not a required mechanic.

It's just that usually mounts are a glorified speed buff with a nice skin. If you put mounts in a game at least let them do something apart from making you go faster like mounted combat, they could have an inventory that the more you fill up the slower they go etc...

Besides GW waypoint system makes you have to travel to them to be able to use them to teleport around so without going 20x speed on mounts you have the time to enjoy the scenery as you go places for the first time.

To be fair the first mounts came with DAoC and they where just for traveling between the towns. WOW was the first game that gave player actual mounts they can ride.

Agreed. Even if mounts only traveled 5-10% faster than the characters themselves, I still enjoy the look of my toon galloping across a virtual fantasy world. Makes me feel like Atreu in the Never Ending Story at the end, riding off on another epic adventure.

Plus, its more vanity items to collect for a game without a gear grind. All end game items are vanity, and players love them some spiffy mounts. It makes too much sense. Big miss imo. Not game breaking by any means, but definitely a lost opportunity.

GW1 wasn't an MMO or an open world game, GW2 is both of these things. They've basically said if people want mounts they'll make mounts, they just won't be in at launch.

Have the devs said there was going to be a cash shop? Can someone give me a link?

I don't really care either way about mounts. But if they do have them, I just hope they do them right. Something at least the level of AoC. How WoW/Rift/SWTOR does their mounts are just absurd.

WOW was the first game to offer mounts people could ride? You sure about that? Try looking up SWG they've had them since 03, even then I doubt they were the first.

Yes, that's been known for years, see the FAQ on the official site.

Anet has said they will add mounts later, so yeah they are not gone forever.

of course they are saving the best for the cash shop.

I'm not impressed with the implementation of mounts in mmorpgs. I think GW2 will be overall better without them. I don't know, but they sorta suit a sandbox world more, horses and the upkeep of them eg back in the day a horse cost a lot and that's why knights had them and few peasants did and losing such would be a big economic loss or russling them a suitably outlaw thing etc...

In themepark mounts boil down to = SPEED

I think devs prefer to keep movement speed constant (below a certain max) for map sizes between events ie not 2 gears to design DEs and WvWvW as well as lower than MOUNT SPEED so that players may possibly end up exploring off the straightest path from A-B also but also using insta travel points can be planned how that affects travel/timing between localities...

To get from A-B where it's a distance over a certain length, as ppl said they have instant travel for that problem of inconvenience which is better possibly at convenience than mounts?

So by using INSTA travel and removing faster speed you solve both problems more effectively is my best attempt to understand why NO Mounts = Better game.

    1. Convenience over longer distances

    2. Planning player movements timing/between localities to work with DEs or WvWvW - distribution of content and player density in/out of a locality?

    3. More social without mounts zipping at speed?

There's really no other reason imo than the fanboy approach with everything in the game being perfect and anything that is not is not needed. The "because there's teleportation already" is nowhere near a valid argument. You could say you dont need maces because there's swords already. You dont need grassy landscapes because there's snowy ones already. Guess what, some people like grassy locations more than snowy ones.

It's no secret that blizzard makes millions by adding vanity mounts in their store. It's because people love mounts, a simple fact. Heck, they added free mount to the "get back one of your friends to play the game again" campaign, I doubt they added the mount reward because people hate mounts.

It's not really hate, it's more of dislike, at least in my case.

The problem is, in majority of recent MMOs mounts served no function other than looks/speed boost, and speed boost can always be achieved by other means than mounts. If a developer owuld actually bother to make mounts matter, by either designing a mounted combat system or added some additional functionality to those mounts I'd be perfectly fine with them.

With GW2 however, since You can teleport between discovered waypoints there is absolutley no point to have another fast travel option around.

As far as issues with mounts being there for just vanity: hit boxes, blocking NPCs, blocking view, interfering with mobs (especially since GW2 combat is mostly built around directional/ground target combat rather than tab-target). Rather than thinking how mounts broke MMOs tho, think how they improved them. Because among AAA titles I can't find a single example of mounts actually improving the experience.

well i didn't want to say it but yeah your post seems pretty much spot on. it has to come down to the fanboi rationalization of anything their favorite devs do is the right way.

like you said "who needs Maces ... you have swords" well i like using maces and I like having a "glorified speed buff with a cool skin".
