Diablo 3: Analyst Predicts 5M Sales

Trends analyst Cowen & Company is predicting that Blizzard will be able to sell five million copies of Diablo III during its first year of release. The company opines that a million of these sales will come via the World of Warcraft annual pass promotion where players receive D3 for free.

Earlier today, Blizzard announced that Diablo III will be released on May 15th and that preorders are now being accepted on the official site.

And that still counts as a "sale"?

How are they counting that as a sale if 1 million are getting it for free?

Edit: WhiteLantern beat me to it. lol

They're not. They pay £15 on top of the years wow sub with the offer, it's more akin to getting it at a reduced price.

My guess is that that $99 annual pass shoots some money to D3 in one of those "internal transfer" things. :)

I would say they are about right, if you figure just the World of Warcraft players who jumped on the 12 month deal to get into MoP beta and get a copy of D3 then you most likely have over a million right there alone. Overall I would predict that the guess (even on the pass deal) will be close to true.

Blizzard have started a war with NCSoft a few days after the GW2 pre-order date was announced and is probably no coincidence. May the best game(s) win. Although I would like to play all of them.

5M sales ? Not unheard of for a popualr franchise but seriously, the game is not even that good.

Grim Dawn, the next great action rpg!

My expectations is they will sell around 10 mil copies.

Even crappy games can go close to 5 mil.

I for one will purchase this one :)

From my experience with large corporations is that each product/franchise/IP/business has its own set of books. The $99 annual pass would be a co-branded sales strategy so funds would goto both products. Its a good way to determine if a product is profitable on its own or requires subsidy from other products.

GW2 vs. D3: War for the casual (M)MO gamer who doesn't want to (or can't) afford a sub. Curious how the horses will run on this one.

They are different enough from eachother that I suspect there wont be much of a "war". Even so, a significant enough portion of those interested in both will pick up both rather than just one over the other.

But whatever competition may exist will only benefit us players more.

Release date, my wife knows what week to expect no sex.

Btw,I think 4 million is still more than every other pc game this year, so they might as well just not lie.

    Prove me wrong

Anyhow moving on to D3, early indications are as well no day 1 DLC like some other company, a great series with a proven dev that turns out quality games. So yeah 5 million in sales with their current WoW player base and the D3 series fans is not really a stretch.

Well, since they haven't released sub numbers since those two promotions took effect...............speculation and vitriol.
