someone said the number of channels decrease the higher level you get?
does this mean there are no server channels at endgame?
if so I might actually download the game for CBT4 and give it a try.
I meant my post on the bottom of page 2 sorry.
Also... I don't know, but channels make the game better, not worse and I am a crazy PvPer, I was infamous every second of the BETAs.
how many channels at endgame? id really like to know
i still dont see how channels improve PVP?. i can understand they might improve the game for entitled PVErs (let everyone kill the world boss sort of thing) but i cant see how it will help pvp.
they should just unlock channels for use as other channels fill up and keep only 1 channel open intially. this will prevent the whole server merge fiasco when the time comes without killing immersion and player interaction.
that is exactly how it works tho i think the newbie zone always has 4 channels. if there are 6 channels and they all reach high pop a 7th will open and new people zoning in will fill it up. they also increased the cap on channels in cb3. it's alot like eq2's channels system or swtors system, except you can switch from anywhere exactly where you are standing. Is it perfect no, does it work, mostly, will it be an issue at worst a very minor one. they can always add longer cast times to the switch process or add a cooldown if it becomes a serious problem.

It may not improve any aspects of PvP, but it really doesn't hinder it either and as a whole it makes the game better, especially for PvE'rs. It also keeps more people on one server, and all those people still have free range of communication keeping servers more active and making it harder for them to die off and the three major cities plus their respective zones do not have channels.
sub channels for each server. you can switch whenever you please and be transported to another instance of the game world.
dealbreaker for me.
being a game that touts its "unique" political, guild war and pvp systems, it seems kinda odd to have server channels. examples:
-guild X declare war guild Y. WHATS THE POINT, they will just switch server.
-want to be the guild that always gets that world boss WELL TOO BAD, EVERYONE GETS THE WORLD BOSS (reminds me of pity certificates issued to poor performers in primary school).
channels are different to having multiple servers because in a server you play with the same people allowing reputation+ community+control/dominance to be established.
overall it just seems like tera engineers are not very good so they took the easy way out (feel free to correct me with proof if i am wrong, im just speculating based on what ive seen from other server channel games). they cannot build systems that can handle a load which 10 year olf games 10 years can. it sends out a negative message about overall quality of the game and what to expect in the future from the developer.
I totally get what you are saying, and felt the same way as well. I will say this though, the game is so populated and this keeps from having 500 servers...you can't port while in pvp...so its really not bad.
Incognito www.incognito-gaming.us "You're either with us or against us"
1. Ch doesn't break up the game, its there to help the population, i rather have 10 servers with ch than 100 server w/o. At least this way server population is a healthy lvl.
2. World is huge however having few hundred people trying to quest in the same area your going to have issue. If anyone recall CBT2 for NA, there was a glitch and lumbertown only had 1 ch... ya i took lot of people over 1hr to finish their 3 quest in that area -.- And last thing you want is the have so many BAM they are right next to each other.
3. Please do some reseach about channel, if you bothered to do any at all you would know that the channels are based off server population. As more people get on channels are added automaticly to fit more people and as people leave ch are taken away.
Starter island has 10ch, by lumber town to lvl 2x there only 4 chs and by 3x there is only 2 ch. From what i heard from people playing KTera pretty much by 40+ there is no chs left.
Seriously EVERY SINGLE DAMN post about ch is like this. The OP did absoulty no reseach and just heard ch and goes OMFG CH THIS GAME SUCKS.... my god the amount of this crap i seen on EME forum already. -.-

you are extremely wrong in many ways. channels break up the game. last time i checked breaking up game into channels was IN FACT WAIT FOR IT IKNOWITSHARDTOBELEIVE.
--------^^**breaking up a game**^^-----------
justifying this doesnt change the fact that each server can be broken up into channels and a better experience could be provided by proper design. how does almost everyone other mmorpg manage to fit everyone into a single open persistent world without channels? magnets?
nope, its called good quest/world design. i didnt really like RIFT overall but I never had problems with massive queues for quest mobs.
if the world is in fact huge (i find this hard to beleive considering the overcrowding issues described) why dont the developers make use of it so they dont have to make channels? i can understand you guys like the game for its strengths (action combat, graphics etc etc) but i think its best to recognise a games faults rather than sweeping it under the rug. it is better for the industry.
Bishbosh it has nothing to do with world design...
This is a basic case of, "we want something different" but when something different comes along those same people complain.
Channels are great IMO, at least in the way they are used in TERA.
would you rather have
A. TERA is single persistent world. The world is large and well designed so there is always a quest available somewhere or other for your level. There is competition for high reward encounters such as world bosses. No overcrowding.
B. TERA can be split up into multiple channels if overcrowding occurs. The world is large but there can be too much compeition for some quests sometimes so instancing the world is required to solve this. The game is still playable and still fun.
currently A is the industry standard and most mmorpgs acheive this without much difficulty. I am not demanding something insane from a game, just a design element that has pretty much been perfected ~8 years ago. Im always up for innovation and improvement but this is frankly a compromise. I like what EVE has done, fitting everyone on one server. I would like to see this done with non-EXCELspreadsheet mmorpgs.
To me A seems like the better option, it is more intuitive and "real", there is one world and everyone plays on it all the time. The point im trying to get across is that TERA could have dealt with this overcrowding issue much better. What you are trying to get across (i think) is that the channels are fine, they dont ruin the game. I think we are arguing different things, am i right? i am saying it is not the best way of doing things and you are saying but it works fine, game is still fun.
it was perfected by having tons of servers to replace the need for ch. Which usually means you end up with a good amount of ghost town server after a while and require server merge later. Or you can have channels in the first half of the game so you can fit about 3-5 server worth of people on to 1 server.
Yes it would be possible for Tera go without channels, we see that in latter half of the game. However the first half need channels because the game is built around end game. After 30+ there much more zones to lvl up in thus ch is not needed. But 1-20 is fairly linear thus it need the channel to prevent overcrowing ahd KSing issue. I won't say its bad design, its more limited design due to budget issue and such.
The multiple channels are actually really awesome when you're fighting unique named world bosses with 30 min respawns.
you are being sarcastic right?
No, not at all. I was farming a world boss with a few guildmates in the last beta that had a 30 min respawn. 4 channels made it so we didn't have to wait long.
You just honestly seem like you're looking for a reason to hate the game. They added a timer for zone changing, it's like 5 seconds or something. If you're really engaged in a pvp situation such as gvg no one will get 5 seconds of standing still to just swap zones. Even if they do, what's to stop the attacking group from switching along with them?
doesnt the fact the there is multiple world bosses take away from their importance. on a pvp server it would ruin the whole competition and player interaction aspect which is what mmorpgs are about. if there are multiple instances of a world boss why would anyone fight over it?
5 second timer doesnt solve the problem and there is no way to know for sure which channel your enemy has switched to.
channels essentially instance the WHOLE game. that is a terrible direction for mmorpgs. we should be moving towards larger servers that can hold more people simulateously with fewer instances given advances in technology.
Have you ever played a game where there's 1 monster needed for a kill and 100+ people need that monster? Welcome to TERA. Thank you for the channel system. Is it really so much of a bother for you that there are other people killing the same mob as you but in a different channel. Or do you like other people taking monsters from you when you're trying to quest, essentially wasting your time? It's not like you don't see anyone else. I doubt you've played much of the game. The system works great.
there is also something else to think about as well..dont know if someone has mentioned this, but their was a situation in aion where i needed a named but it was bugged on channel i was in..i just changed channel there and then and boss was waiting for me..it works a treat imo.especially if something is bugged.

ah i see. iron out bugs by replicating the whole game world until shit just works. i cant wait for this game.
just kidding,
i get the point you are making but again, it is a compromise. shouldnt we expect companies to fix bugs the proper way by you know actually fixing them, not just putting together some hack job solution?
Like one person said channels are there strictly for overcrowding. Even though I prefer one world for all players it really comes down to game design. I played Lineage 2 for 6 years and afther the game went Free To Play its a total mess to navigate though towns sometimes. I swear I logged in a few weeks ago and it was so many people in the town of Aden you could hardly move or see the NPCs.
Bishbosh your points aren't exactly making sense, if you made the world so big that there was ample quests for everyone logged in at the same time it would be even more deserted and helpless for OWPvP than a channeled game, you seem to think TERA is empty or something...it's not at all.
Also, the competition for world bosses is always there, they will always be dead and with multiple channels you can fight people for more than one, even better IMO. Take it on one channel and then go to the next and fight people for it there too.
Channels also increase server activity as in, multiple flood channels for excessive players allows for more people to be signed into a server at once and while these people may be in a different channel they can all talk and trade in the same chat, or even still be partied together and talking.

People are everywhere...these videos are just of shitty zerg guilds but i'm trying to show you, it's not a barren wasteland like you seem to believe.
wtflol i dont think the game is barren/empty. hell ive been assuming that it was overcrowded hence the need for channels based on what you guys have been saying. thats why ive been saying it would be better to make the world bigger rather than create multiple instances

Only in the lower lvl area, i have to say Tera's 1-2x is weak. Its really linear during those lvl which is why its overcrowed because well there is only 1 area for those lvls. However after that multipule zones open up for lvling and thus its not crowed any more and channels goes away in later lvl.

Only 5 pages =X normally it starts to make sense around 15+ =X But ya lower lvl area is linear so overcrowed, channel appear. Island of dawn in CBT 1 went up to 29 ch coz there was soo many people XD but now its capped at 10. lumber town area i think has default of 4 ch. and the next area is also 4ch poppria. Than at 30 area, jagged coast is only 2 ch. And from what i heard from KTera at 40+ ch disappears. If they ever polish up lvl 1-20 there won't be need for channels.
One way to do is this will what lot of peopel wanted is different starting area for each race. I think what they can do to revamp is to add lvl 1-11 which is island of dawn now, a training camp/instance area for each race. Your only there once and you can't go back once you leave. What ever happened to just killing the other 4 people camping your boss mob? Gamers these days. Channels ruin immersion and they ruin PvP. There is no counter argument.

This is not fact and regardless..
the way channels are implemented in TERA ruin nothing and make the game better for a majority.
Most PvEers like them, and a large portion of PvPers don't care and some like them like myself, it's a very small minority that dislikes them.

It's a very large map.
THEN WHY IS THERE OVERCROWDING @_@
3 possibiltiies
1. the world is actually not large, it is small -> devs should make it bigger

Warhammer wants a word with you. Empty servers ruin PvP, not channels.
Did you bother to read the fact that channel disappear later on in the game?
This is not fact and regardless..
the way channels are implemented in TERA ruin nothing and make the game better for a majority.
Most PvEers like them, and a large portion of PvPers don't care and some like them like myself, it's a very small minority that dislikes them.
also indicates laziness/incompetance of developers
