Ok, I just finished my 1st beta weekend of TERA, I played a LOT, but of course I didn't see more than the first 12 levels, because I tried out many classes.
Overall it makes a really good impression, the combat system feels new and fresh. I also liked the lush world, the details. Butterflies, rainbows, jumping Popori, fun animations, REALLY awesome textures where cloth looks like cloth, metal like metal and stone like stone! (Like SWTOR... *cough*) Of course Tera is not "the next big thing", so my expectations and measures are more generous. I never expect Tera to be THE killer MMO, but so far it felt fun, if you have a class and thus a combat system you like. The world design is really the best, also the gear visuals. I really enjoyed the sunny feeling this game radiates, this atmosphere of "not sooo seriousness". Especially the Popuri, while not a race I intend to play, sure are fun to watch!
Now a few things I was wondering, maybe some people can tell me:
1) A lot of areas seemed empty, both devoid of mobs and of NPCs. That kinda unsettled me, given that Tera will launch in ~6 weeks or so. Were they tested in other beta phases? Whats with these zones??
2) Tera seems difficult to be honest. Soloing *is* possible, but even then after level 7 or so the difficulty was clearly raising and this was a lot more difficult than WoW, LOTRO or the likes if you solo. I felt I got into the position combat quite well so far, but my friend who was later on with me also confirmed this impression Tera is a bit a step back into more difficult MMO experiences. So far to level 12 that was alright, but it made me a bit uneasy if difficulty would rise even more in later levels.
3) Warrior and Priest were easiest for me, but Sorcerer was SO weak IMO. Even my Mystic was doing more damage and killed mobs faster I felt. Thinking that Sorcerer is supposed to be a glass cannon, I felt that was WAY out of whacko. When I target 1 mob with a Ranger, it is usually dead when it arrives at my point. With Sorcerer up to level 12 I need to jump back/circle around 3 times before the same mob is dead, and that definitely feels way too weak. Does that get better? Will they still balance it? I would have loved to make Sorc. for the magic effect, but that was quite a turn-off. How does Sorcerer evolve over time esp. in terms of soloability?
4) Also I would be interested in the classes Warrior, Priest and Ranger. How do they develop over time in terms of soloability? And experiences with them?
5) Any other latest info what they will add before launch, what I need to know asf. would be welcome.
After the mostly dull, soulless look of SWTOR I must admit Tera felt SO good with the lovely detail and nice design. All these wonderful things to see, animations, textures asf... that was soooo refreshing. But of course that's just me.
I have preordered Tera and I am sure going to have a relaxed time. ... Maybe even with a funny little Popori guy. XD

Well, it's sort of hard to say.
I like a world where one can ride and not be inundated with mobs every 10 feet.
However, there are many areas, at least from what I've seen up to lvl ~27 that have quite a bit to do. Heck, the Poppori area is my favorite and loads of interesting things there.
I mostly played a lancer and got to lvl 27 (or 28 can't remember) and mostly soloed.
I did group up for the larger "BAM"s which was very fun. I was actually able to solo some of them but it took a while.
I can't really answer much with the classes you indicated but I do know the lancer got more survivability the higher you went so I will assume the other classes get some nice things as well.
The warrior is know as a tank (avoidance) and it seems that it would be very challenging but also very fuun to play this class.

Tera will be niche for sure, personally I like that better. Because the next big mmo will have to cater to way too many casual player to my liking. So glad you had fun and wi'll try to answer question best i can.
1. Really? I think thats because you only gotten to lvl 12 might be why, and haven't seen the other zones. Honestly i don't feel this issue at all so idk o.o maybe its personal preference
2. Lol well thats is a first =P Most people been complaining Tera is too easy. But yes if you been playing a lot of WoW or mmos like that Tera is more difficult because it does require you to pay much more attention and be more active. However normal mob wise its not that bad, almost every quest is soloable. The REAL challenge is when you hit the BAM and first Dungeon at lvl 20. Now BAM are soloable but they do take some skill and time, 1 hit and your loss probably 20-30% of your hp, but its extremely fun. Dungeon you need a party, first dungeon is easy and you can probably do it between 3-5. The second dungeon if your at like 26-28 you going to need a full pt, if you have 30+ for it than you can do probably 3-5. But second dungeon is much harder and so much more fun than the first. And the lvl 60 dungeons (end game) that was just added well even the most experience players were wiping 20 times on certain bosses XD Fun fun stuff to look forward to ^_^
3. Really o.o? Might be because its lower lvl and you haven't picked up your skills but Sorc is highest aoe dmg, definaly out dmg mystic and end game wise Sorc hit the largest number if the condition are set right. I know sorc that crit 700k end game and zerk only goes up to around 550k. Every class can solo in this game, and warrior get really hard when you try to tank with it.
4. Again all class can solo pretty well. Warrior is definly good solo, they can solo BAM pretty well too. Warrior is dps/tank hybrid they have about 75% of dps dmg and they are evasion tanks. The new patch in Korea greatly increased their dps and they are revamping their tanking ability soon as well.
Priest have lot of heals, so your soloing should be pretty good consider how you never die XD They have decent dmg as well so should be good,
Archer definally good for soloing, their ability to kit let them kill large mobs at once if you do it right. And their have super high single target dmg.
5. Lets see we are launching with lvl 60, which KTera only got like 11 days ago. Thats a good sign that we won't be lagging behind much at all. My guild guess is beta will cap at 38, because they probabaly won't let us go to the second continent before release. Makes sense because you can't exactly show all your game before launch. So with release we get lvl 60, Arena, an massive PvE event similar to the rifts in RIFT, political system where each area is either won by vote or through arena. And dailys and thats about yet I think? And ofc lot of end game 5 man dungeons with hard mode =X
Glad you like it hope to see you in game =D
Really hate to be debby downer here but...when are we going to stop giving games raving reviews after 1 week or the first 20-30 levels?
A games true face doesnt appear untill endgame is attempted.
If a game doesnt get you excited within the first 10 levels its got some serious issues.
Just looking through the game however, and being on the market currently for something diffrent untill the major titles drop...what this games catch?
Seems to be just another...
what tera does good, at least in my opinion, is the combat. it takes the standard mmo from the past 5 years or so(or more than that) and adds a new combat system to it. other than that it pretty much the same. there's a political system we dont know much about, and some (what can be intense and really fun at times) open world pvp. it's an in between game imo. a game that makes steps in the right direction. wether or not those steps are big enough, is really up to the player to decide.
I've got the straight edge.
This was an impressions thread, not a review.
I've seen the endgame, I like it.
Most games don't get people excited in the first levels, it's usually later on, which is the same for TERA, nothing is fun in the beginning IMO, but the OP likes it, cool. Personally 20+ gets good for me rolling around in a group fighting BAMs and PKing anyone in our way.
The games catch is action combat, you can't click your skills, your mouse is used to aim and when you fire off a skill whatever is in range gets hit, if you swing your sword 360 degrees, it hits every monster it touches(or player).
It has collision detection so certain classes have block abilities to mitigate all damage, other classes have dodges and you can not run through mobs or players.
It has factionless OWPvP.
The political system seems fun, if it is just a gimmick or not only time will tell.
better combat than I've had in a long while, open world pvp.
Fun classes.
I don't really need much else for this type of game.

i have a hard time, picturing you trying to pk people! lol you seem so nice and friendly.
back on topic!p
i 'm glad OP is enjoying Tera, i most say that i keep finding new things with each beta. this game really encourages exploration, so if you are like me, who likes to wander around and explore every corner, you will find yourself with a lush world full of surprises and secrets waiting for you to discover!.p
Tera grouping is actually excellent. it reminds me alot of that wonderful old school grouping experiences , is so rare to find nowadays in the so called new gen MMO. this beta i went to an area called pirate grotto, a beautiful area full of tropical islands surrounded by sandy beaches, and lots of colorful and different kind of fishes swimming in the water. i joined a group for some of the bam quests, inside the Laberinth there. i had so much but so much fun. we all ended up adding each other to friend list, hoping to continue on playing together on next beta event.
As the saying goes, looks can be deceiving.
I'm also a Popori...
The most entertaining view was to watch a basilisk flatten a popori with a body slam. I was yelling at my mic "squash that furball, yea".
Racist.
OP I guess it might just be what you a re used to you have to stay pretty mobile. I rather liked the sorcerror, AoE kiting is a lot of fun and up to level 20 quite forgiving.
The place I found the jump in difficulty was at level 22 (I cant remember the name of the zone it has quite a lot of BAMs starting with those big blue guys - its a sort of 'L' shape zone). I found stuff moved faster and you had less room for error. Also the minions that you could shrug off before could cause a bit of damage and would take more hits to finish. I ended up popping bandages after several fights. I was feeling pretty uber up until L20 maybe I just suck after all?
I'm not sure about soloing BAMs it's not really hard it's more a question of not being greedy and trying to get an extra shot off. It's kind of a war of attrition. If they telegraph a move you release your shot even if you are a wisker off being fully charged. That was pretty much the thing that did for me when I thought 'hmmm I can just about finish this and still get out the way'.....wrong.
As an aside is the only place to get potions from a general merchant or from a player alchemist? A couple of potions does give you some wiggle room in a solo BAM fght.
Interesting, I played a Sorc to lvl 15 or 16, halfway through the second area, and it never felt weak to me. I played half asleep since mobs died so quickly. The only time I had to pay attention was the mini-BAM at the end of the starter zone.
I really hope they get to do another pass at the starting experience, it's such a boring drudgery in the beginning, the game really doesn't make a good impression at new players. How many are going to stick around long enough to see the good parts?
I was in the first NA Beta, and will be in the one at the end of this week. I agree with the Op and like TERA. Combat is the hook (in any MMO at least for me) and they do it well. It is skill based but still has that pinch of attribute management to keep it an RPG. I personally was loving the story.
Looking forward to continue my Popori character :-) but on the fence about paying a sub, when Guild Wars 2 will be free and Im currently (and thoroughly) enjoying Eden Eternal, with Lime Odyssey around the bend..
My wife and I tried hard to like the game. We just decided, theres better games released already, and continue to play those instead. It s a decent game, but IMO has terrible release timing. It might have been better to release FTP, going up against games as GW2 and D3 as far as releases. We ll see, but I think you ll see alot of, ""I m bored" posts a month after release.
I know that NA TERA has already seen xp bumps but I hope they don't get out of hand catering to those just looking for end game content. Such a waste of world design.
Just not worth my time anymore.
Just not worth my time anymore.
Don't ever cross a popori!
Considering you can play D3 with only one hand if you own a naga mouse, it does get a little tiresome. GW2 will start seeing negative threads once people play the first beta weekend after the prepurches. We'll be seeing the "I canceled my prepurchase ..." threads.
well its every game =X its stupid to think there be 1 game that everyone would love XD unless you brain wash everyone than ya that works =X
