Out of all the MMORPGs you've played, which was your favorite in terms of PvP and why?
----
I personally enjoyed EverQuest II's World PvP System. The game wasn't designed for PvP, but being able to attack the opposing and "exiled" factions anywhere in the world was intoxicating.

Guild Wars because it is based soley on player skill. Gear has nothing to do with how well you perform.
Grim Dawn, the next great action rpg!

EVE.
High emphasis on strategy and "battlefield awareness" + dying is really something you want to avoid which makes pvp really exciting and blowing up other people's stuff so very rewarding.
My brand new bloggity blog.
Seeing how the only PvP I've engaged in were in WoW and SWTOR, I'd have to say WoWs was "better", yet when I was suscribed, I did enjoy SWTORs PvP more. A little dissapointed the PvP rankings are showing up almost 4 months after release, that is something I would have enjoyed.
I haven't played that many MMORPGs.
I keep the aion, DAOC (most the concept I did really not played it), Shadowbane and guild wars, most global cds skill is not good for pvp, most of time you just spawn 2 -3 skills, hoping to or you out gear others or to land a crit who will trigger something will help you kill him
DAoC
Shaiya
Planetside
Vanilla WOW (Before BGs)
Would say DF except for Naked zergs.
Sadly I haven't played a good PvP MMORPG yet. Just waiting for GW2 and Planetside 2 to come out, to see which has the better PvP system.
SWG (pre-NGE) - it has not been matched since!
Aim based pushes a huge portion of your player base away. Maybe you like playing in an empty world, I don't. There's a lot more that goes into picking the best PvP system to date than just PvP and what you like.
I'd say that it's a toss up between UO, DAoC, and WAR.
UO had meaningful combat, from small skirmishes to faction wide combat. There wasn't much in the way of meaningful territory or resource control, at least nothing hard coded into the game. Even as old as it was, it was pretty balanced. Though again, the larger scale combat was done more as events or based off controlling a city. So it had it's flaws. Plus, it's obviously outdated.
DAoC didn't have anything in the way of solo PvP other than the rare occasion that you didn't find yourself face to face with a zerg in the frontiers. Though, it was probably one of the most strategic and balanced combat systems to date. There were hard coded rewards gained from relic capture that affected your entire faction. There were dungeons and quests that opened up, which you could fight for control of. There were massive siege battles as well, and your guild could claim keeps and let their flag fly as a warning to all attackers. Though, like I said, it lacked any solo PvP due to land restrictions. The lack of PvP arenas really made this game shine. As nearly everyone participated.
WAR is in a similar boat as DAoC. WAR fixed the lack of solo PvP by allowing enemy factions to enter your lands. You sieged and faught for areas of the map, such as small checkpoints that awarded your group. Though, faction wide bonuses weren't there, you knew where the fight was and you could get to it quickly. That, in my opinion is where WAR screwed up. It became more of a PvP siege arena rather than a strategic war game. LFG tools ruined it. Also, there really wasn't anything to fight for other than gear and maybe a little pride if you were in an active guild. Arenas at times, made the RvR lakes dead. Another horrible design move. Also the lack of dungeons, in or out of the RvR lakes.
I really feel that if a company can take the best from all three of these, keep the combat simple, but the act of surviving a bit more difficult, someone would hit it big. You need familiar combat and controls, solid UI, a very balanced and thought out PvP system, meaningful territory control for dungeons, resources, quests, and keeps, solid grouping systems, a very clean territory map, and out of the way of players who like to avoid combat, I think you'll be close to perfection.
I've heard that EVE has a decent system too, but I haven't actually played it.
For me
1. Darkfall awesome PVP game.
Coming up a close second since i started playing .
2. Mortal Online
Source? exactly... don't comment on stuff you know nothing about. OP asked for peoples opinions... not their critique on other posts.
And ofcourse we have Darkfall 2.0 on the horizon

DAOC & Planetside.
Lineage 2 hands down closely followed by guild wars.
why ?
in lineage 2 : freedom to kill/attack whoever you want, massive siege battles, clan wars, battle for epic bosses, simple farming area or just for the hell of it, etc
guild wars : strategy, coming up with new builds, comps and strategies for gvg/hoh. who doesn't remember the first time they got raped by a full team of archers with mass spirits in hoh ?
I would leave bugged and heavy hack games out of any really pvp, unless you like the concept, something would be nice if all bugs and hacks are fixed.
also when we say pvp we like something more then solo pvp, most of time this"solo pvp" is more gank fest, wait for someonebe busy with a mob or 2 then attack his back.
I was a big fan of both of the Risk Your Life games, that is until they said they would offer a 1 million dollar prize for a pvp tourney, then backed out, then went bankrupt, then closed down the servers.
Was fun for a while tho.

Eve Online. No contest!
Open world FFA PvP and no instanced BG or arenas to hide in. Winning battles and wars actually effects the game world. You can decide how much you're willing to risk by what ship you undock in and how it is fit.
There are certain queer times and occasions in this strange mixed affair we call life when a man takes this whole universe for a vast practical joke, though the wit thereof he but dimly discerns, and more than suspects that the joke is at nobody's expense but his own.

My source is what we call subscription numbers of the above mentioned game. It's a combat system that pushes away players who do not have a twitch skill set when it comes to video games, so my other source is common sense. I've played nearly every single combat system out there, I know plenty about it. What do you know? Exactly.
I gave my opinion. Just because you don't agree with it doesn't mean that it is not an opinion.
And do you honestly believe 2.0 will do much of anything for that game? It won't, I hope it does, but I know it won't.
Online shooters are better for pvp for me.

Faction pvp without a doubt DAOC, closely followed by Planetside. FFA I m going with shadowbane, I had alot of fun in that game.
I haven't played all games of course and I also find it difficult to compare certain PVP systems. FFA PVP with organised group PVP for example. Apples, oranges.
But I'll try to answer the question based on the amount of satisfaction I got from playing PVP. For me the number one is :
Guild Wars1 , GvG mode (Guild vs Guild). I just love tactical teambased PVP. The big plus in this game was the endless theorycrafting about team skill builds and the observe mode that lets you watch PVP matches. I really hope we get observe mode for structural PVP in GW2.
That said, I also like EVE PVP. It is entirely different, but I just loved the large fleet battles. Still, I prefer the fast paced structured PVP in MMO's so far. (not if it is gear based btw)
