I believe this could work if everything works horizontally at endgame like Anet is telling us, which I'm sure it will. It's very early to tell how the economy will work with this approach after launch.
The currency that I believe Anet will use to buy upgrades and actual character bonuses for players is Karma. Karma is earned through a players deeds and accomplishments in-game. So you have to work for your bonuses when it comes to performance. Gold and gems are used for small consumables and cosmetic bonuses respectively.
My speculation of course.
I completely disagree. There are 80 levels. Endgame isn't everything. I can enter WvWvW at any level and if gear or gold makes even a little difference (someone mentioned it can buy siege engines!) that's a problem. We can debate how much of a problem all you like (without more information on obtainability of items and gold among other things we can't debate it intelligently, however), but regardless, it presents a potential power imbalance.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
So let me get this right, if you see an epic destroyer of worlds hammer in the auction house, huge upgrade to your char, an item that you would have to farm for months to get otherwise, you can now buy it with real life money if you so wish / can afford, by trading gems to gold?
remember the part where THERE ISN'T A GEAR TREADMILL?!? no one has to grind for anything. like the spoon, there is no destroyer of anything hammer!!!
I just wanted to know if I can do what I asked but couldnt be arsed to read through the whole thread, which I eventually more or less did and learned that yes, I can buy char improving items with real life money.
I saw Anet dev talking about a piece of gear with something like +10 these stats, +10 all stats, +this and that a huge list of what that one piece improves. Are you saying it means nothing? Why is there stats if it means nothing?
It was just a question, I dont mind RMT, I couldnt care less if this game had sub-fee if it's good, I play mmorpgs based on if I like them or not, I have no problem putting some money into a mmorpg that I enjoy. Though I dont respect Anet for saying "we dont have sub-fee and in game store is for cosmetic items only" but you can shuffle currencies to be able to buy gear improvements with real money, which in essence is pay to win. Ofcourse the impact isnt that severe because in PvP gear doesnt matter. I'm not that stirred up about these news, but can understand if some people are a bit upset.
***In Guild Wars 2 we have three currencies: gold, karma, and gems. Gold is the common in-game currency. Karma, which players earn in-game but cannot trade, is used for unique rewards. And gems are the currency that’s bought and used to purchase microtransactions.
We have a new player-driven market that allows players to trade gold for gems and gems for gold. If you want something, whether it’s an in-game item or a microtransaction, you ultimately have two ways to get it: you can play to earn gold or you can use money to buy gems.***
GW2 carebear formula v1.0 (beta)
a)real money for gems
b)gems for gold
c)gold for karma ,items whatever. help me to kill this and that i pay 10,000 gold gems whatever.
looks absolute carebear game to me.
The best part of this is watching how people go over their heads with vague assumptions about games that they know nothing about, then when something comes out and violates the current groupthink trends, everyone goes berserk.
This is good news for this game, trust me.
The only carebear that left is the one that thought this was all about gear.
That said, I will personally pwn you with my :10dolla: gear and my :50bux: army of third world hirelings. Many times. Fear me and my money.
I don't think many people would have batted an eye if they blog had simply said they'd be offering things like vanity clothes and pets, and account services for real money in the cash shop, end of story.
Hard to compare it to EvE and Plex without knowing exactly how crafting/drops/loot will work in GW2.
But again, EvE is a universe where everything is player made (for the most part) so if GW2 has a lot of really high quality loot and drops that are untradable (BOP) than it might not have the same downsides as EvE and Plex.
It would be really nice if every post regarding the current topic would contain this ^ specific post as a quote.
Yeah, would certainly stop a lot of pointless ranting.
Can anyone provide links as to how exactly loot/drops work in relation to crafted gear and how much BoP vs BoE gear etc. there is?
I mean... all this worry about P2Play and Buy2Win would be pretty pointless if all the "good stuff" is BoP drop/loot only.
I'm pretty sure this is the case, with the bound currency involved being Karma.
Let me explain this to you so you understand it, because apparently the blog got you so frothed up into a "PAY2WIN?!?!!?" frenzy as to cloud your reasoning, I can excuse your lack of understanding.
Expansions, MTs, and other spending that's MY choice, is separate from being FORCED to spend money via a subscription.
Additionally, providing Gems for people who purchase vanity items(content/fluff/whatever you want to call it), and allowing them to be sold in the Trading post, allow people who don't wish to pay beyond the original box cost an opportunity to own those items, and/or participate in that section of the content.
This allows EVERYONE, regardless of their purchases to participate. It's not exclusive, it's inclusive.
Furthermore, not one penny of MT money is going to change hands unless there's something in the cash shop that players WANT TO BUY. (Again, I'm not forced to buy anything or pay a monthly sub, it's optional)
The blog plainly states what type items are to be available in said cash shop.
This whole thread is a tempest in a teapot.
You overlook the fact that the GEMS that are purchased with REAL CASH can then be exchanged for GOLD, which means that EVERY SINGLE PURCHASABLE ITEM IN THE GAME CAN NOW BE BOUGHT WITH CASH.
Does that help your lack of understanding?
That is completely untrue.
Karma is a bound currency.
It's completely irrelevant considering that the majority of most powerful items are going to be gained via Karma, which is a bound currency.
Karma is a non-tradable reward received by participating in events and helping others with their personal storyline. It is primarily used to develop a character's personality. Karma can also be used to buy items from certain NPCs.
Almost everything which is attainable by using karma is also purchasable using coin.[1]
Well I'm not happy with this at all. You can trade real money for in-game gold which essentailly means that you can buy anything that can be bought with real money. And the way I see it, this only has two potential outcomes:
1. Nothing you can buy with gold makes any real difference in terms of the power of your character. And this would suck because it would mean there is basically no economy and crafting would be useless. I mean, people aren't going to pay for something that doesn't do anything.
OR
2. You can gain an advantage over other players by spending real money. Since real money can be traded for gold...that means you can buy ANYTHING i the AH with real money. And if items actually make a difference in the "power" of your character, you can gain an advantage by buying them.
I honestly don't see how Mike O'Brien espouses their mantra of "no player should ever be able to spend money to gain an advantage over another player that spent time" and then he goes on to say that essentailly any item in the AH can be bought with real money.
Huh??????
It means either the AH is completely irrelevant, or players can gain an advantage over other players by spending money. These are the ONLY two things that could result.

The problem comes when you have to buy gear in order to survive and beat the bosses that will give you your Karma. They will massage the numbers, and the difficulty, to make sure that they're getting all the profit they can from the cash shop. They are NOT going to let people play this game for free. If you're playing for free, them someone else out there is spending extra money to make up for it.

Sorry, don't have a link at hand, as usual all this information can be found in the blog. The basic idea is: the power plateau (the 100/100 in your earlier example) is very low, and there are several parallel ways to reach it. There is 100/100 crafted gear, 100/100 dungeon token gear, 100/100 karma gear, 100/100 WvW gear. In order to reach the power plateau with your character, you can basically mix and match gear from each source.

I have little problem that there's "additional costs" in the game. Frankly, I'd rather have the option to spend than being forced to spend. It's a subtle difference, I realize that, but at least I have a choice.
I know im going to get flamed for saying this, but ive been thinking for a lot of time that the only way of effectively fighting gold sellers is for the own company that makes the game to sell its own currency and sell it cheap (not that i intend to buy it)
Stopping people from steamrolling each other with their wallets would be more a matter of doing it intelligently and subtly. You can buy vanity items with gems. You can buy gems with ingame gold. But how much is the average player going to be willing to pay (even with his ingame currency) for a vanity item...that, like it or not, is a limiting factor.
I dont really know how this system will work in the end. i think they are taking risks, but there is a chance they may pull it off. There are too many unknown factors right at this moment to accurately predict wht will happen when it goes live. It will be interesting, of that i am sure.

Thank you, this is the point I was trying to make earlier. You sum it up well. I don't like either possibility, since I enjoy crafting and a lively auction house and I do not enjoy competing with other people's wallets on that auction house.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

I'm not realy happy with this. Tbh I dont think it will have any real impact on general PvE or e-sport part PvP.
But imo there is real danger that it can destroy WsWsW. Yes your gear will have power celling so money will not buy more personal power but in WsWsW where you will need to buy upgrades to keeps and to buy siege weapons, it can realy fast become P2W ...

They have said from day one that they would add dungeons in the cash shop
Unless people can buy cash shop gems for gold they would be forced pay with real life money or miss the bonus content.
It has disadvantage for sure but i personaly cant think of a better idea if you want people to access your store without useing money.
It is straight up taking RMT out of third parties hands and putting it in the hands of the players.
A game like WoW any player can go out to a website and spend $50 and get thousands and thousands of in game currency, and then go spend it on anything in the game.
A game like EVE or GW2 players can buy gems and use them to buy gold from the players and do the same thing. The difference is the in game economy is in the players hands.
It isn't a bad system really. As long as there isn't stuff you can buy for gems only that give an advantage over those who only use gold.
As a family man with not as much time as I want to spend on games, I think this is a great sollution. You don´t have to end up to far behind those that invest time in getting some objects. I know it won´t be XP-boost etc, but it´s still nice to see that if I wanna I can buy some of the stuff I want instead of putting time into that aspect, and can have more fun when playing the game. Two thumbs up from me.

As it is now, it's quite controversial.
I'm pretty sure this is the case, with the bound currency involved being Karma.
From http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Karma
Karma is a non-tradable reward received by participating in events and helping others with their personal storyline. It is primarily used to develop a character's personality. Karma can also be used to buy items from certain NPCs.
Almost everything which is attainable by using karma is also purchasable using coin.[1]
[edit]Acquisition
Karma can be obtained by:
completing events.
assisting another player with their personal story.
The amount of karma you currently have is indicated on the bottom left-hand side of the inventory window. Karma cannot be traded between players.
Cluck Cluck, Gibber Gibber, My Old Mans A Mushroom
make gems account bound = still money for Anet, but no gold selling stuff going on

All this speculation is pointless and meaningless.
No one will know what the effect the cash shop will have on hte game until we know how it will affect GW2's "Meta-Game"
You know. the overall effect on the playerbase and in game economy as a whole. And that's not going to be determined for a while.
So, mean time.....we gotta wait and see.
Buying/selling gold destroys the economy/crafting for everyone...especially for those that don't participate.

I know it won´t be XP-boost etc, but it´s still nice to see that if I wanna I can buy some of the stuff I want instead of putting time into that aspect, and can have more fun when playing the game. Two thumbs up from me.
