I can buy some form of power with gold? Isn't this true in any game?

DillpicklesDillpickles Member Posts: 20

I played WARhammer with people who bought gold, accounts, etc.

I know in WOW people often buy gold or accounts.

League of Legends people sell Level 30 accounts.

After leveling in SWTOR I wished I had the money to buy a account.

Every single game that has some form of value can be bought or sold for real money.

[mod edit]

I just don't see the arguement. If Arenanet does sell items that grant power then teh game will die a slow death. If they don't then everyting will be fine just like every other game.

There is virtually no MMORPG on the market that real life money doesn't play into if the player chooses that. Honestly as a long time player who used to look down on people who bought accounts.....after leveling in SWTOR's I totally understand spending money. (anyone want a level 50 shadow?)

The only real difference is that I'm going straight through Arenanet instead of some 3rd party gold seller.

The difference is that when legitimized, the practice becomes so widespread that you either fall behind or pay up.

And GW2 was supposed to be B2P.  Now it's quite clear that cash shop and gem exchanging will become prevalent and costly.

Yes, it's true, players have always circumvented "the system", so in the end its up to you to decide if what others do really affects your personal enjoyment of the game.  If so, don't play, if not, play on and have fun.

I've rarely encountered a game where P2W was really the rule (ROM being a notable exception)

Or you know, the OP could of just contributed to the other threads regarding this subject.

Because moderation on this forum is bad enough without people encouraging it to be worse. I can't explain in more detail without bringing down their wraith upon my account. Now I've explained myself, why don't you explain why you would ask for a thread to be locked rather than ignore it. Don't like it? Ignore it. Why would you want to prevent other people from having a discussion? Let other people discuss things. Don't like the topic? Leave then, and leave them be to discuss amongst themselves. I just don't understand the mentality of not only not wanting to discuss it yourself, but not wanting others to discuss it either. You should choose to particpate or to not participate, but you should not encourage moderators to prevent others from participating. I guess you get to decide for everyone what topics are okay to discuss?

What exactly do you fall behind on?

PvP?   You get maxed level + full unlocks with the best equipment as soon as you enter.

PvE?  So they can get to higher level content faster.  They're not locking you out of anything.   The rarest equipment will have the same stats as the normal end game equipment.   The only difference is vanity.   Ie, if you want to look awesome, either spend the time grinding or pay up.   You don't have to pay a cent if all you want to do is kill things and have fun.   That person who spent $1000+ on his uber rare bikini armor setup with a bunny hat riding on a panda is not going to be any more effective than you are.

He might be referring to the possibility that someone could spend 20 or 30 bucks on XP pots, allowing them to reach level 80 approximately one week faster than everyone else, where they can lord their store bought, yet negligible, superiority over their fellows.  That is until everyone catches up to them a few days later.  And in the meantime, they will be having their useless asses handed to them in PvP by superior players who took the "long road" by leveling unassisted.

That's a P2W scenario that certainly frightens me *shiver*.  No wonder people are in such a tizzy.

Who the hell is this newb?

The only things in the Guildwars universe that "grant power" are Consumables and Item Mods and they hardly grant much...  (esp in PvP where everyone can unlock them).  In PvE the most expensive mods are Superior Vigor runes and +20% ench spear Mods.   ...and Birthday Cakes & Celerities for Consumables (4k-6k ea).  Their Gw2 counterparts will be craftable and unlockable by everyone.

All the really expensive things in the GW economy are rare "Skins". ...purely aesthetic.

(RedRocks USED to be top tier cons but they got nerfed so no one gives a shit about 'em anymore)

Sure you can, but there is a level and easiness to obtain that level of power. In theory any multi milliardaire could buy NCsoft or any game company and become an admin with full right, but that's just theory that don't really stand in everyday facts. Some game let you get more power with more ease that's all. I think what is a bit upsetting in this blog article is that they always said they will make a cash shop with cosmetic and service and now they allow direct currency trading from the cash shop. Sure before people could buy those cosmetic items en mass and resell them to get the gold, but its just so much easier to do it now because you don't really have to care about the value of those item and how well you will resell them.
