I like it so far, the only thing I dont really like is the PVE emphasis, which is going to draw me towards GW2. I REALLY like their skills wheel system, I don't like it that its complexity is made useless by limitless build switching like in world of warcraft, which tells me this isn't going to a be the game for PVP players. Still on the fence about Archeage and Tera, well Tera has raccoons and pandas, ...
I'm going to play both this and GW2. That said, I dislike the fact that both will have a cash shop.
GW2 is a B2P, so that's somewhat more understandable... but the gem system is iffy. I don't understand how it's OK that you can practically buy in-game money with real money.
TSW is P2P... So if its cash shop has a similar system to the gem system, it's gonna be an even bigger turn-off. I can accept cosmetic stuff and account services, but company-sanctioned RMT is a downer.
About Funcom. Yeah, they kind of suck at launch. And yeah, their support is not very good. Still, I find their MMOs are always at least a breath of fresh air, if not ultimately better than most (to me, at least AO was back then).
Oh I agree entirely. I will be playing both. I will be ignorring the cash shops in both. I know FC sucks sometimes, but if I am out $60, that is not a lot of money for me, so who cares.
Now, if the cash shop has p2w items in it, I will definitely be rethinking TSW. If it is only cosmetic, then I am cool. GW2 initially promised only cosmetic, and that has come around. I am not totally down on cash shops, even in sub games *IF* the items available are not game changers and only cosmetic or vanity items.

your supposed to have multiple builds
e.g. in one dungeon there is a boss you can't spank and tank, or heal through - because hes just that hard, you die instantly if he sees you, so you have to switch to rdps specs and use the cover provided by the environment. There are other encounters that require 3 tanks etc.. Its part of the design to have specific skills accross the party to overcome certain content.
There isnt enough PVP though I agree, this seems a shame, in many ways the skill system needs PVP as PVP will be a strong catalyst for experimenting with different builds
As far as I know the PvP in this game is only a side feature
Not exactly correct - the PvP will be a main part of the game....but not at launch. They have turned down what parts of PvP will be in game when it launches. I do not know the why behind this, but I suspect we will find that out soon enough. It will still have the 3 faction PvP, still have the capturable minigames, and still have at least one persistant goal capture orianted PvP free for all zone. They have stated they plan on double that at least with persistant goal capture type zones around the world. Big plan, might be why they are holding it back at launch.
Personaly I never have a problem with holding back some content and releasing as the game goes on in free patch/updates. Help keep the game fresh as time goes by. The only time it becaomes an issue is when they launnch with not enough, and dont keep enough coming as time goes by. Demand and supply need to work themselves out right.
in my opinion it isn't enough at launch. you have 1 zone supporting what 150 players vs GW2 and its it's 4 zones supporting 500 players each. Not only that but the zones in gW2 are anytime whereas the TSW zone is "endgame". They needed to launch with 3 zones with plans to expand to 6
that said 3 factions > 3 rotating servers
true persistence > fortnightly tournament
but theres a real problem withscale with this kind of PVP, just one zone cuts out a lot of the higher level strategy of choosing where to fight.
we saw 1 objective in the warzone ( Dragon capturing the Illuminati Temple)... there are 4 objectives per zone, so the zone is 4x bigger than what we saw... the faction that controls 2 objectives in the warzone takes the global reward... there is a bonus reward for taking control of all 4 objects in one zone.
18 years old is a child. But we may have different ideas of maturity. One poster here once gave a very good definition of maturity. A 25 year old may think maturity is looking at boobs, profanaity and the abilty to be offensive to other people while an adult thinks maturity is the thought that maybe its better to consider other peoples feelings and not be offensive. In other words maturity is empathy. Physilogically a males brain does not full develop where they can develop and understand empathy until at least age 25.
Do you have a source on this on, and while at it, what is the female equivalent age? Smells like a bunch of crap atm to me (mass generalization)...A 50 year old may think maturity is looking at boobs etc as well...Maturity ratings (pretty much all ratings) related to age are for the most part nonsense, but it is the most simplistic standard to go by..."standards" don't like to be compared to anything complex.
Most movies or games with 18+ or Mature rating with blood, sex, and gore do well in the lacking substance part.
Hopefully this game gets a T rating, and doesn't go the M path just for the instant thrill type crap.
The freeform skill system surely is one of the cool things of TSW. I do have some doubts about TSW, mainly being an elaborate shooter or so. But I am willing to give it the benefit of doubt.
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
AOC was an immature game with immature themes targeted towards a young adolescent audience. It emphasized nudity, gore, blood and profanity over substance and thought. It was directed at younger one dimensional brains and young peoples hormones. It used a simplistic follow the arrow combat system taht required no thought. It completely lacked in substance and content but was high in eye candy and flash. It was a game made for box sales and targetted towards an audience that would not have the attention span to play a MMO longer than a month or two.
Ok but you are aware that AoC fits very nicely in the whole Conan "mythos"? It's a based on a pulp fiction books/short stories started in the early 50's.
These books/stories completely embrace a hyper real adolescent energy: real men warriors, nudity, gory battles, etc.
Remember the books have been around since the 50's and are aimed at people who can find some humor/entertainment in content that is painted with very broad strokes.
People aren't too much different today apparently.

Oh all these poor sheepies getting brainwashed by Funcom.
1 horrible launch (AO) I can see writting it off as a fluke, when defending the second MMO (AoC) But once they learned absolutly nothing from the first 2 horrific launches what makes anyone think their going to get it right on the third? Oh ya that one term "blind Fanboy" thats the only way a person could defend funcom.
Ill tell you guys what exactly will happen and you dont need a crystal ball to see it.
Funcom will continue to release really nice promising CG trailers hyping the game to high levels. They will handpick certian gameplay video to release to the public. They will keep the NDA up as long as they can possibly keep it up. Beta testers will be ripping this game to peices. Most followers of the game wont see them because all reputable game sites for the masses have to delete NDA breeched posts. The ones people do see, the poster will be immediatly written off as a hater/troll. When game launches there will be a massive outcry over a buggy game lacking features or a feeling of the features advertised was nothing more than a deceptive ploy. I can go on but anyone with half a brain thats been around the MMO genre knows what happens next, I just hope this time that they actually include all the features listed on the box in the game.
Im definatly following this game so I can sit back and laugh at all the poor sheep when funcoms hype train hits the wall. And by the off chance that I am wrong and this game turns out good, hey ill have a game to play. but im 99.995% sure this is going to be another funcom trainwreck.

Before anyone gets upset (probably already too late) speculating about us selling BOC or RBP in this store let me assure you that the general guidelines we set out years ago of not selling "power" for money is still very much in force.
If my explanation of this in the previous thread caused any confusion I apologize as it was not my intention to deceive anyone on the subject. It is already possible to generate a great deal of this "advantage" through the expenditure of credits in-game and I'm certain we can all admit where some of these credits are coming from...this is a much more secure alternative for everyone.
A "secure" way to buy advantage huh? heh.
So, what impact did all this have on Anarchy Online?
Keep in mind, AO wasn't even designed with a CS, TSW is. And their business practice will permiate everything they do.
Alot of people are bashing FUncom in this thread, but I'm here to tell you that I have played AO since 2005 and haven't spent a dime yet......Yeah they may put things in the cash shop that some players feel aren't fair but you don't have to buy them......Same with AoC...You dont have to spend a dime to play....Quit blaming the companies when the fault lies with the consumers.
You are 100% correct. you do not need to spend a dime in the cash shop. But the player next to you is. He's buying Tokens and OFAB Armor.
Well, so what? Tokens are just mission points and OFAB is only best in slot for 1 to 3 pieces.
But they aren't buying them to use them, they are buying them to re-sell them ingame for hundreds of millions of credits a pop.
From there, that player will reach out and contact people like this guy
Who will be happy to take those credits the other player just traded tokens that were paid for with real Dollars/Euros
He will level the other player's character from 1 to 220 (for about 1/2 billion cr) and then equip him with every piece of NODROP best in slot raid gear in the game. Because FunCom love Loot Right sellers. Afterall, those Loot Right Sellers encourage cash shop purchases. Why else would such a broken mechanic exist in a game where up to 30 minutes after a boss dies, anyone in the game can be warped in and brought into the team and allowed to loot? For a hefty fee of course.
Don't believ me? FC outright killed 2 of the markets in the game wher eplayers can earn money prior to endgame. (S10--No more bounties and Token Guns People don't buy the guns anymore, they resell token packs)
Why did they do that? CS sales went up. Before I left, all those die hard anti cash shop players who voiced so many concerns were now all talking about how much they were personally bugeting for the cash shop.....It's just easier than farming.
This is how AO is done now. Not rare, not uncommon, but prevalent. Just look at that thread, it's one of many and there is no lack of people posting for his "service".
Good luck finding groups now too. And once Ao goes live with the instant level packs (yes, that's correct, by a buff that grants instant levels...BOOM level one to level 220 at the right click of a button.) That's going to do wonders for the people in LFT.
And let's not forget the already over priced AAA sub fee they still charge.
Way to kill a game FC. Good Job!
And that's not even all of it. There is a lot more FC crap beyond this that hasn't even touched on.
This game is going to be better than that over-hype garbage Tera Online. That or ArcheAge Online/Blade and Soul.
EME itself is trying to hide the game's asian mmo stuff which is an automatic fail in my book.
Defiantly looking towards games that have more content then a publisher determined to give it's paying customers as little as possible while pretending to be a WoW killer.
It's nieve to assume that this game is going to be the second coming of jesus, and it's also very nieve to assume that this game will not be Pay2Win after a few months to a year. Funcom can do whatever they like, and from a Buisness point of veiw it is a good possibility that it may in the future.
Firstly, Secret World is developered with the Dreamworld Engine. The same engine that Age of Conan was developed with. That meaning the game is going to be instanced. Some gamers don't like instanced MMO's, and that will turn people off.
Secondly, it has nothing too do with what company is making the game that determins if the game willbe good or not,. It has too do with the people who are working on it. Bioware made some great games, but that still dosn't mean they can make bad ones too or make poor marketing descisions. Or Blizzard that make great games and turn them into boring easy-mode MMO's for toddlers.
Thirdly, there were about 70 people working on the project, in 2008 and some of them previously worked on development of Anarchy Online, Everquest 2, Dreamfall, and The Longest Journey.
If you hype yourself over the new state of MMO's and come back and say you were ripped off because you pre-ordered it and paid over 100$ thinking the game was going to be good. You only have yourself to blame, not the company.
This game does look very interesting to me. I came into MMOs through GW1 as my first game. One of the strong points of that game (IMHO) was the build system where you selected 8 skills from a choice of thousands and looked for the synergies between them. Later in the game with the 7-hero party, creating sets of builds which would work together proved very engaging and challenging. Not for everyone of course, but for my friends and I, it was an enjoyable part of the game.
Now TSW looks to provide a similar, but more complex, system of 14 skills selected from a wide range, with no limits on the skills you can acquire and train up. I like the sound of the convenient tools to save builds and gear setups. So far so good.
I'm a little concerned as to whether the implementation will live up the promise though. But for me, this won't be a problem. I've got SWTOR to last me for the next few months levelling a handful of chars to 50 and finishing the storylines, and by then GW2 will be out and occupyiing my time for a while. So hopefully, TSW will have time to come out and settle down - and if it does live up to the hype I'll definitely be playing it at some point, if not at launch.
If you can get past the horrid animations and dead, lifeless world, then more power to you. I'm not sure I can.
Have to agree with this. The game has an interesting premise but the animations, the combat and the lifeless zones, not to mention Funcom, are big detractors for me.
Sounds like Ilium 2.

Well, the main difference is that with SW:TOR you were paying for world PvP without being there (among other things). Here you are forewarned that features are not going to be present, so if you wish to participate in the launch with the limited features, it will be an informed choice, rather than a con by the marketing department (and what happened with AoC launch).
