Well, at least the review at NO point even pretended to be impartial. I stopped wasting my time after I finished the second paragraph.
Same. No game deserves a 10/10. And a 9/10 should be an extremely rare rating. I give the credibility of this re-review a 2/10.
I think you may have hit on something here. Every time MMORPG.com does a review, we, the users, their customers, should give the review a credibility score. They may eventually get the message that we prefer unbiased, un paid for, critical reviews over the promo peices they currently do.

My take on EVE? It's a game that presents the player with a myriad of things to do, but the process of actually doing those things is quite mundane. The act of travelling, fighting, mining, training skills, completing missions, etc. is all very anti-climatic, to say the least.
I'd have to disagree with you there. Unless you are talking about mining in 1.0 space or running missions or something. While the flight controls may seem clunky at first, there are very complex. You need to take into account radial velocity, angular velocity, ship size, turret tracking, plus any sort of offensive or defensive modules that a ship has equipped. You can't think of it as a flight simulator, you need to think of it as a naval simulator. EVE does risk v. reward ffa pvp very well. When you fight someone in EVE you put it all on the line. If you lose, your ship is gone, and modules looted by the enemy or outright destroyed. Sometimes that might mean weeks worth of work down the drain. Of course, what is the point of making isk if you aren't going to use it to have powerful ships for pvp? EVE is the only game I have played since the days of MUDS where I get "the shakes". "The shakes" is something that happens to some players in PVP in EVE. It's an adrenhaline rush that comes from the risk. "The shakes" might come to non pvp players when they are trying to smuggle goods in or out of nullsec ect and they get attacked. Luckily, EVE makes catching an unwilling target pretty difficult if the player being hunted is careful. No other game out there right now that i know of offers the adrenhaline rush mechanic.

PVP is pretty optional in high sec. I have been in high sec for a while and never been hit by a Pirate, the region gaurdians instapop those who try.
If you want the pvp you go to null sec or low sec. High sec is pretty safe so if your getting ganked move to a new high sec. Its about options. Nothing is preset if you don't like your situation move to a new area of space ther are level 1 agents everywhere.
People who complain about the PVP can do something about it by moving. Space is big theres no reason to stay in a hot zone if you don't want to.
Missions involve activly using skills that you have learned, if you don't have skills you can use its your fault. This is the issue most people have is that it does not hold your hand. They have Incursions now which are like boss fights with inteligent A.I. If you want PvE its around and available.
Stopped playing EvE for time availability reasons and a little burnout at it but... man.
EvE is still the only MMORPG worthy of subscription and hours of gaming in this world. It's not for everyone and this review was a bit biased on the positive but EvE is the "must-have" model in the genre (theme-park or sandbox).
Lazy developers, quick-cash-grab corporate suits, unimaginative designers and EA/SOE please take note.

Well, think about this though -
In order to give a MMO a truly "fair" review you have to play it for a long time.
If you have to play it for a long time, you are going to become fairly biased one way or the other.
So how do you do an impartial review of something you spend literally months invested into?
EVE is a strange animal. I have played it on and off since it started. I would give it about a 7.0 overall.
Like all games it has its good points and bad points. One of its bad points (at least to me) is that it tries to force you to join a corp. They do this by taxing you if you are in a NPC corp. This happened because the player corps started whining because they could not war dec you if you where not in a player corp. In a sandbox game you should not be forced to be in a corp. So to me EVE is not a true sandbox.
I am playing EVE at the moment. I do like the game overall.
9.2! This is one of the worst scores I have ever seen any MMO get. It is bad because EVE does not rate a 9.2. Don't care if it is Adam Tingles opinion...that score is not realistic in the least. MMORPG.com once again proves they have nobody writing their reviews that are actually capable of doing so.
Exactly. I have more fun playing Eve Online in my head than in reality.
Exactly.
And I certainly tried to actually play EvE in reality, twice, second time actually subbed and played for many months before I just couldn't take it anymore.
But hey, to EvE's credit, I played it longer than I played Rift or TOR lol
So you guys don't like the review because, you didn't have the experience you wanted within EVE?

To be fair, isn't that actually the appropriate reason to raise an objection to a glowing review?
No not really, at least not if they can't actually disect the review and point out what is wrong with the score. Their reasoning is, because they don't like how things are implemented, maybe the reviewer did?

I don't like sci-fi settings much and even less spaceships but this is a game I still play because the game is the only proper sandbox with a decent amount of players. I 9.2 might be a bit to high but I wouldn't give it anything less than a 8.5 in score.
I played it for a long time, probably more than any other MMO. I made a lot of ISK, joined a big corp, held space, lost space, mined, built ships, lost ships, killed ships, speculated in the market, etc. Ultimately the problems with the game overwhelmed the experience:
-It attracts a lot of jerks. And not "barrens chat" jerks, although there a lot of those. I'm talking about Ulitima Online I'm going to ruin your day because it's fun jerks. The game doesn't do anything to discourage them, it even supports them to a large degree. You can say "gtfo carebear" all you want, but it isn't fun to have to stay in a station in high sec because a bunch of bullies like to make newbs cry /lulz.
-The interface sucks. Yes, apparently it has gotten better, but its mostly like switching between a spreadsheet and your desktop background.
-The basic PVE is awful. LIttle red crosses, how fun!
-When people say you will never catch up to the vets, it's because you won't. I started in 2005, and even then it was too late. Now, if I was still playing, I guess I would be one of the oldsters, but there would still be people who I could never catch up to.
I admire CCP for their acomplishment in running it for 9 years. But it is a niche game, and when compared to other it in no way deserves to rated conisitently "the best mmo."
Well, not to offend anyone but EVE was always game for more mature players. Its not perfect, but than what game is? Sure, its mostly PvP oriented, its grim and unforgiving, but thats what true hardcore gamer likes. This is not mmo for your every day casual player, there are no magic or potions to save you here. There is only deep and dark space and nobody can hear you scream.
You forgot to mention one critical point - EVE is pvp-centric. More specifically you can be attacked by other players anywhere. For an admitted care bear like me that is a game breaker. Yes, I do think that Eve deserves this score - it is a fantastic game. I enjoyed it for over 45 days. But after being ganked in 0.9 space twice I gave up. Yup I could not cut it. On to the next mmo.
The thing that non-consensual PvP need to survive, is unknowing care-bears like you. Open World PvP is NOT about equally matched willing participants. Its all about forcing unwilling and unprepared players to experience the durres of non-consensual PvP. The only problem with this group of players has with battlegrounds is the preparedness and willingness of their opponents.
battlegrounds suck, they are allways the same and therefore boring, they have simple strategies, they often also encourage people to do things like go "let them win we get another match in sooner and get more tokens that way"
Battlegrounds are the single worst addition to the MMO genre in the last 10 years
Best MMO I have played personally. Not playing at the moment, but I am not done with the game yet. I love pretty much everything about the game, was disappointed though with the way Incarna turned out. Not because I wanted walking in stations, just that they wasted all that time and money working on it. Could have been spent making the true game better. Regardless, looking forward to playing again when Dust comes out.
As far as suicide ganking...never been suicide ganked in high sec...ever. I am usually the one doing it. You have to fly around in something that is worth ganking and be stupid enough to autopilot with 200m isk of stuff in the haul in an totally untanked badger 1 to get ganked. I have mined, hauled, PI, done all the carebaer stuff for years, never had a problem with it. Just need to be aware of your surroundings.
My take on EVE? It's a game that presents the player with a myriad of things to do, but the process of actually doing those things is quite mundane. The act of travelling, fighting, mining, training skills, completing missions, etc. is all very anti-climatic, to say the least.

Adrenaline rush, risk vs reward, sure, I'll concede to the fact that EVE does all of this very well. However, I'm talking about the actual gameplay, killing an enemy, using your weapons, mining an asteroid, moving around, etc. Everything is based on the heavy usage of an extremely unappealing UI coupled with some VERY monotonous controls (Click, click, click..). For those reasons I simply can not enjoy playing EVE.
Eve was the perfect game for me in everyway, if I was being hypercritical I could moan about plex and the time/skill prgression, despite that it still ticks every box.
So someone explain to me why I've started this game about 10 times (really not exaggerating) and still think it sucks balls, I just can't get into it at all. not even a little bit. I've tried with friends already established, I've tried with a group of newb friends like me, I've tried solo. Nothing makes any difference I just get bored and log for longer and longer periods until I'm no longer logging in at all. The annoying bit is I'm so positive each time I start but it doesn't matter.

I say its the reliance on a cluttered UI, really monotonous controls (The form in which the player interacts with the game consists of: click, click, click...), and the overall excruciating slow pace of, like, everything...
Eve is a great game, The only time I was ganked in high sec, I was being stupid, mining in a border high sec system during a hulkageddon. Eve can be very safe if you don't do dumb things.
I just wish they would fix the mind numbingly boring mining. Worst feature of the game. That is why so many people bot that portion of the game.
I also wish they would make 0.0 fights something other than who brings the most big ships. Big ships should be vulnerable without smaller support ships to protect them.
Oh and those stupid cascading menus, remnants from the 90's. really do need to go, that really weakens the UI.
Not why it's great for people that have played it for years already. If it is not accessible to the player just starting the game, then it's not a good game.
All I ever hear is about Eve Online on forums is - " it is not accessible to the new player. - new players will hate it and have a hard time "
Why would they continue to allow that and how can that in any way be considered good? There aren't even any "accessible" links to download the game that I've seen. So the developers certainly don't want a new player base.

How about you try it before you judge it? And do you really want to have everything that people who played for 9 years have when you are new? In that case I for one really wouldn't want you in EVE.
Im a relatively new player and I am able to do a lot of things and make good ISK, the problem isn't the skills points but rather the player skill needed, however that is up to everyone to learn and adapt to.
