Chicken little and the Temple of Anet

GWFandaddyGWFandaddy Member Posts: 180

The sky is clearly falling. Well, judging by what I've read in the posts here anyway. I now understand why Anet has kept things close to the vest during the development of GW2. And I can hear the Wow fanboys saying, "close to the vest, are you kidding me?" Let me just say, that if you'd been following GW2's progress as closely as many of my fellow GW fans and I have, you'd know, it's not been a constant flood of information. If you're a troll, there's nothing any of us, that have experience with Anet can say, to make your supposed panic go away. If you're not a troll, and you have little or no experience with Anet, there's still probably not much we can say, because you'll just chalk it up to fanboyism. Nevertheless, glutten for punishment that I am, let me try.

Scratch that. I just don't see that it's possible. You won't give a rats behind about what I think of Anet, and its relationship with it's core group of fans. You won't care that I know there's know way Anet drops the ball here. If you have no experience with GW, you may not know what it feels like to not have to worry about kill stealers and griefers. You may not know what it's like, to not have to grind to obtain max level. So, you also wouldn't know what it's like to only really have to worry about your own skill at playing the game, and not how stinkin' long is it goin to take to get leveled up. And, if you have no experience with GW, you won't understand how a cooperative online RPG can be this damn good, without a sub fee. Because we all know if it's free, it can't be good, right? If you have no experience with GW, then you wouldn't have a clue about how there can be a shop, that has no real implications in game play, i.e., it's not p2w.

When it's ready, it will launch, then you can make an informed decision on whether it's right for you. Until then, we're all just peeing in the wind. Well, I'm not, I have experience with Anet.

So, you knew long time ago that GW2 was indeed getting an official forum? I thought the usual GW1 "fan", at least the one whose voice you can hear from, disliked the idea of an official forum?

How come so many at GW2Guru were surprised by the announcement? If any fan should "know" Arenanet, shouldn't it be them? Maybe, you simply don't know Arenanet as good as you wish you do.

Personally I feel most of the decisions Arenanet have made thus far have been good ones.

The only thing I knock them for is not giving out more info about the game. But even then, that approach doesn't always work as MMOs of the past have shown.

I will be buying GW2 and playing the f*ck out of it.

Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.

Really? That's what you come back with?  #1 on my list is, "How good is this game? Is it fun".  #7392 on my list is, "Will it have official forums"  Wait, check that, I removed all but the first 10 on my list, so Offical forum no longer on list.

I see myself as a corefan of Arenanet. Guild Wars holds some of my best memories from the MMORPG's (CORPG's if you prefer) I've played. And about the only MMORPG company where the devs actually impressed me with their design philosophy. I played GW1 from start and even now I still log in for events and untill recently helped gamefriends (who I met in GW) to gain their HoM points.

That doesn't refrain me from asking critical questions though or even outright critizise. Even the best can make bad decisions now and then. The reason why I do this is kind of obvious imo. I care about GW2 and want it to become awesome.

I do understand why some ppl dont want to see all the worries about possible gamemechanics etc. And would prefer players to just wait and see how it will turn out. But imo that is not always the best call. I think it is smarter to voice out concerns as early as possible, so that Arenanet gets a clear idea of what players worry about. Especially with this dev company. I think they actually do listen to their players. If you just wait and it turns out not that great, you have to stick with it untill they hopefully change it.

My point is, you so called "GW1 fans" do not know Arenanet well enough if you couldn't even predict that Arenanet would go against the will of the loud "GW1-fans" in the matter of forums. This is why, we shouldn't trust "Arenanet would never do that, because I know them"-arguments.

He never called himself a GW1 fan just saying but you put him in there anyway.

He used the expression "my fellow GW fans "  and thus strongly insinuated that he, himself, is a GW fan. "GW fan" is often used as an expression to refer to fans who must have have liked the original Guild Wars.

Or maybe you don't know Guru as well as you think you do.

I read the comments in the topic in that site regarding the forum announcement. Unless several mods and players were just  practicing their acting skills, I do believe that those particular GW1 fans were very surprised by the announcement.

While i agree with OP one thing is different with aneT now: Jeff Strain. Since he quit 3 years agosome things have changed and I am somewhat worried that Mike O'brien wont be able to fill his shoes.

GW2 looks very impressive (and Strain really both wrote the engine and put up the basics) but i am still somewhat worried about where ANET will be in some years.

Good small companies tend to first become larger and losing some of it's quality and later become bought up by EA and Activision. i hope that wont happen here.

I posted this about two hours before the official announcement. I'm a GW1 fan and I guess I nailed it, huh? -- not that it means anything.  Here's another one from a couple of weeks back:

Any more wisdom to share about us ANet fanboys?

It is more that most of the GW fans really don't care one way or the other.

I mean the only people actually hating the idea are people invested in fan sites, the rest of the people who doesn't want to be on a official forum can just not go there.

Personally, I am only on one MMO forum and can't care less if GW2 will have an official forum or not, I will discuss both it and other MMOs here.

And I hardly speculate about stuff I don't care.

Did you make an arrogant and obnoxious claim that you have experince with Anet and that you understand them and know them very well? if not then you shouldn't even take this personally. Even i believed from very beginning that Anet will implement official forums but i never made any claims of understanding Anet and knowing exactly how they work and understand their fans. Even though here on forums a lot of hardcore Anet fans were repeatedly telling everyone  'sorry it is impossible it is never gonna happen, you guys don't know Anet very well'.

Well... we  know now don't we?

I'm on the otherside.   Too much hype can lead to massive disappointment and serious back-lash.   Plus, too often the hype is just pure rubbish.   Things that were never going to happen or thing they weren't good enough to make happen.

How come this topic went from a long time fan rant about trolls to a "OMG! This game will have official forums! ANet you suck!" ?

I'm surprised this thread devolved so quickly, but, I shouldn't be. In the big scheme, it doesn't really matter. In a few months I'll be happily gallivanting about the lands of Tyria.
