honest question about the NA censorship...no troll
I was wondering if the elin that shoes up as the banner on the official website here:
http://tera.enmasse.com/game-guide/races/elin
is generally what they're going to look like in-game...and if so...
if you've made such a rediculous effort to censor the elin's clothing style so they don't look like over-sexualized underaged girls...why have they also gone to extreme lengths to make the westernized faces look so much MORE like children's faces than the originals?
does anyone else think this kind of oxymoronic behaviour is odd? o.0 you've halved the starting and continuing population of the game as a company...then decided at the same time you're going to make the original child-like image you're trying to protect even more child-like...and somehow a pair of short shorts is going to balance it out? o.0
I've made this observation as someone who has the ability to legally play both NA and Korean servers...so I will be choosing the kr servers purely out of my objection towards censorship of artistic freedoms...just wondering if North Americans (who seem to be the ones who are always yelling about freedom of speech and so on) are actually going to let this slide as just some kind of angry rhetoric...or are you planning on actually taking some form of action...especially with your recent run-ins with government trying to censor your internet content...
big brother is kinda nosing in a little too much...slowly but surely...little bit at a time so you don't notice it...but it starts like this and one day we'll just accept that we're being censored?

It doesn't really bother me. If it's an issue with anyone it's so easy to get around it's laughable. I couldn't care less. I personally don't view the race that way, but I have seen many people rage on forums over it. Seriously if tilting the camera and not seeing a little more leg out of a toon is going to "ruin" a game experience idk what to say to that. You can always just download a mod/swap the .dat or whatever.
The censorship of TERA has nothing to do with the government. It was a choice by the publisher to make a change that the west would feel more comfortable with.
Freedom of speech and freedom to do whatever you want are two completely different things. Freedom of speech is a right to ensure that all opinions on a matter are voiced. It is a way of preventing corruption and promoting transparency.
The people voiced their opinion with regards to the Elin, not the government.
In my opinion, En Masse and Frogster didn't westernize it enough. The extreme cutesy'ness of it is one of the big reasons I canceled my preorder. Its also extremely sexual. The armors are just over the top. So what do you get when you combine extreme sexual outfits and tele-tubby type cuteness?
Regardless of whether Elin are in the game or not. You don't combine kiddy cute stuff with sexual stuff and expect it to go mainstream in the west.
and what happens when they start to punish the game file modders? I understand from friends that this usually isn't the case but its already frowned upon...what happens, and does it affect you when they're flat out mediate what you are and aren't allowed to look at? does the infringement on your rights bother you? should we also paint a dress over botecelli's birth of venus for the NA audience?
I specifically side-stepped the term freedom of speech because I agree with your point on it...no one says the first amendmant gives people the right to do whatever they want...well no one with half a brain would ever read it that way I hope...
what I wanted to know was how comfortable truly people are with the censorship that has clearly happened...and I can't come to the belief that there was absolutely no government pressures and that any artistic director of a production company would come to this decision especially with the outcry against it from the player community...

Yes they announced this censorship like a year ago and Elin fans have been going crazy non-stop. It will not be changed, and I do not care, I personally think it is for the best, all these Elin players will play anyways but the uncensored Elin might turn some typical people around when they see them in the game.
frankly i dont care about pixals in a video game, but i do have to point out the freedom of speech only effects people in the USA.
as well games hosted/created/sold in the USA do not get/give freedom of speech to anyone, if you want freedom of speech you go outside to the street corner and yell off a soap box.
games are censored by other people. who do not care about such things. just like the age restriction on games are differant to each country. each country has a differant view on ingame pixals of things.
cant really argue FoS for this as the game is created in asia and is a private product so not protected by any of the USA constitutions or laws. (just like MMOrpg does not give you any USA legal standing outside of their ToS. mmorpg gives you the ability to argue your point of view, but it does not give you a FoS in any regard)
frankly i dont get why people care so much about it. perhaps im just used to manga style art.. i dont know, i saw the character before and after i personally saw nothing wrong with it either way. i do get where people get the sexual idea's from but same time.. this sort of stuff is fairly common in asia (and not in a bad way as many people seem to construde it as)
i know i dont play Tera simply because i dont find the game interesting from what i have read or seen of it. doesnt matter if the toon is running around killing stuff in bra & panties or 5'.0" tall but thats just me.. to each their own.
Its not the government is the community and well NA aka mainaly America is THE most hypacrital country in the world. So ya. We have our own sense of whats "right" thats constantly changing to fit what make us look good. Not going to go too deep in but its just American's own fcked up sense of "justice" at work here nothing new.
its simple, ppl are dumb. we're all adults, and as adults we should all be able to make rational choices. the people who are complaning that the elin's clothing are veiwing them as real people, which they are indeed NOT. any logical person can tell you, these elin are nothing more than a fantasy creature that dress skimpy because theyre supposed to be one with nature, hence why should they even bother with clothing since thats a HUMAN thing. you dont see real bears running around in boxers do you? and because they view the race as sexually explicit makes them the actual perverts, and are afraid to even admit that themselves. so what do they do? they cry out to the company to change them, so they dont get aroused looking at these FAKE creatures and feel guilty about it. Or, theyre people who are too lazy to censor what their children play/see on the internet. Maybe they should take the time to block the site so their child doesnt even have the chance to catch on to this game? hm? or any other website like that for that matter. but hey, these ppl find it ok to let their 5 year old play call of duty mw2 and let him/her mow down an entire airport of civillians. go figure.
Also, why is it ok to see a painting of a naked child, but depicted as an angel? so, because this child has a halo and wings, it makes it ok? by this logic, those kids need diapers!

If some of you had bothered to read...it wasn't the clothing on the Elin I was wondering about...but the face texture modifications...that make the characters look MORE like children...and less like asian adult women...add the clothes...add a winter jacket for all I care...what I wanted to know was how you felt about the face structure being westernized and made to look like a child's face...

this is what I wanted to know...I wanted to know if the face structure had also been changed due to censorship...because the banner for the Elin on the official NA site does NOT look like any other elin faces...it looks...bloated? is this just the model they've chosen to use? and how weird is it if it is? o.0 they've chosen to censor the clothing because they're worried the character model resembles human children too much...and then chosen to represent that race with the most childlike face they could find?
Cliffsun, the facial editor in TERA is pretty in depth. You can make a chubby face if you want.
it may very be a conscept art peice that has that face, unless its actually done as ingame screenshots..

alot of game banners are "prettied" up.. just look at the old Evony 1.0/Evony 2.0 game banners.. that showed off women cleavage the game was a browser text game.. the most graphics it had was showing the game world map... none of it had female characters lol didnt stop them using that to hook young boys to play

No, you are correct, it is just some concept art. They don't look like that at all.

it looks like an in-game or at least a rendered model of the characters...but note the "chubbified" lower cheeks and the blushed nose...it looks...like a toddler...whereas I would have said they look like adult women in children's bodies before...
Yes I see that, it`s just the Elin they made, you can make an Elin look like that in game, why they chose that image I don`t know, it looks bad IMO.
And what if a person doesnt want to see the things you are talking about? Do you just fuss and make a stink until it is rammed down that persons throat, all in the name of free speech? Free speech for who? If someone doesnt want to see things like this, well, isnt their speech just as important as yours and this thread?

If a person mods the files then only people who mod the files will see the original outfits, people who have the true NA version will see them as normal. So, there is no "shoving down throats" in that case.
Also, if you don't want to see it in general, then don't play the game is what I say. If you have a problem with the Elin outfits but not the Castonic outfits then I say there is something wrong there.
once again...no one has said anything about the first amendment...no one mentioned free speech...in fact we've managed twice now to side-step the matter of free-speech altogether...if you go back and read the posts before posting...you'll note that we've gone to lengths to avoid it...and if this is indeed your stance on it and you stand behind not cramming anything down people's throats...would you then support an optional button from within the game that allows people to switch between KR and NA textures? because it would seem to me that your stance on this should also be applied to the opposite for people who do want to see the original artwork...
The thing is that someone always will have a moral objection to anything no matter what it is.
You as a consumer will vote with your wallet, and in this case did the western publisher decide that doing this changes would loose them money.
No one would accomplish anything in art, music, movies, games or books if the maker were forced to take out anything that might offend someone that probably wont buy your product anyways.
I mean they should not slap stuff like this in your eyes but they don't, it is your decision to get the game or not.
Censorship is a very bad thing and imagine the world we would live in if they took away everything someone didn't like. There really would be no music or art and no computer games besides Tetris.
It is like those people complaining about GTA, they would never consider buying the game themselves, so therefor they don't need to see it. If most people thought like that the game would´'t have sold much and there would be no games like it.
I frankly don't see the original elins hurt anyone even if they seems a bit creepy to me but I think that the devs probably did the right decision anyways.
The version they're using falls way too much into the uncanny valley. Extremely creepy looking.

I think they made the right move and they knew it was easily modable so anyone that cares can just do that, I believe they planned that and it was the companies call I think it was gross to have it and quite frankly perverted and uneeded BUT this whole "YOUR A PEDO FOR WANTING IT" "YOUR A REPRESSED PEDO FOR NOT" argument is so CHILDISH and stupid its needs to stop SOME people might just not like it and find it uncomfortable just the same as nudity and other things in the game like i do not like it and am glad i don't have to see it i don't get why if you can MOD it what the problem it? maybe I'm missing something the faces can't be?
