Tera will survive with a healthy niche market. The combat is awesome, it feels a lot like Dark Souls with it's style and pacing and that is a great thing. The questing sucks but at least it gets people out into the world for more open world PVP. The best part of TERA aside from Combat is that it has an FFA PVP system. Any game with an FFA system will always have a following. People who like FFA games won't be the same people that like GW2 since it has no open world pvp and is all instanced crap. The worst part of TERA in the beta is that it is filled wtih GW2 fanboy trolls who do nothing but denigrate the game. The game is very asian, it really feels like a final fantasy game in art design. Graphics are beautiful though. If they end up implementing the castle siege type stuff that is rumored it could end up having an awesome endgame. For now, though, FFA PVP combined with action combat will keep TERA populated.

open world pvp? or high lvl killing people 10 lvls or lower and saying they are good in pvp?, also gw2 will get people after skill, not gear, tera will have his niche? yes it will.
but truth is waht tera shows to me, aion did better, even after the finger ncsoft show to any paying customer ,when they make it F2P, I still consider aion better, only diference is you have to aim not tab to hit something.

I guess you weren't in a guild or high level. I spent much of my time in BETA fighting people from other guilds our level.
The last hour of BETA our guild organized an assault on another guilds big group standing around, 10 of us in vent well organized probably took out 20 or more and gained control of the bridge.
Unfortunately there is a low level cap in BETA and restricted area to explore, when you get max level your bound to go look for something to do eventually, patrolling lowbie territory is usually a good start, kill some lowbies from another guild and soon you've got an all out war.

Yes it has open world pvp. A lot of people like it. Just like a lot of people hate instanced pvp. Action combat goes leagues towards improving the genre as well. Combat in TERA is how AoC combat should have been. Another thing worth mentioning is that crowd control is very limited. Too much crowd control ruins pvp (see SWTOR) but is often required to make a game seem like it is skill based since the alternative in tab targetting genre is simply spamming a couple buttons. With action combat you don't need so much crowd control.

The main difference (and issue in the west) with Aion's PvP is that there are no PvE servers. Aion works in the east, because easterners have a different culture and you don't generally get attacked for no reason. Also getting greved is rare and unlikely.
In L2, which shares the same factionless system with Tera, when there was a dispute for a world boss, the two teams assigned a dueler and whoever won the duel got to kill the boss unhindered. In the west, one team would backstab the other while the boss was engaged, for max grievance.
There's no competitor for TERA at the moment. GW2 CBT showed us a moba game, where you spam skill, click-tab to target, and hope that your enemy dies, as well as serious unbalance between classes, like overpower mesmers and their mirror images and underpowered useless warriors.
If a player is looking for something challenging at the moment, the only mmo that will give it is TERA. Despite the generic lore and quest system, TERAs enviroment is simply AMAZING. People that are used to WoW system of casting and cooldown might have some trouble, but time and practice will do it.
What I've have experienced in TERAs pvp and combat I had never experienced in other MMORPG. You gotta know well you class, your enemy, positioning, timming, take care with mana and spent skills and of course: AIMING.
Tested GW2 and I can fairly say it cannot be called an MMO, just like its predecessor was. The devs didnt change their e-sport goal, they just tried to adapt the old GW into a MMO enviroment and that sucked in my opinion. "Oh, but the random dinamic events", yeah... you get bored of them past lvl 20.
Even more, as GW2 is b2p and TERA is p2p they are not even market competitors.

It's funny that you complain about the open world PVP in Tera, but mention Aion doing everything better. Did you actually play Aion and experience their PVP? If you did, you'd know the ganking was just as bad. Hell, if you've ever played any MMO with PVP, then you'd know that getting gibbed by higher levels is a part of the process. If you want honorable e-combat and purely skill based PVP, go play an FPS because you'll never get it from an MMO, and yes, that includes GW2.
I've been watching a few videos of Tera and to be honest, it looks pretty good.
I love the graphics and the combat seems fun and familiar, but..to the people playing in the beta.
Is it really as fun as the videos make it out to be? Or is it just another soon to be dead game?
I really need a new MMO to play and keep my attention, hoping this is it.
If you like quick hack-n-slash action pack combat that lets you move your char around for better damage hits, jump, dash, roll while attacking then YES! try this game out. I played this weekend beta and I like it! Graphic, scenery, art style is just right for me! I can only wish it was F2P tho otherwise GW2 will be taking all my time when it releases. If this game was F2P, then I have the option to play both games switching back and forth whenever I feel like without having to worry about monthly payment or anythign like that. I say just go for it and try it out. Worst come to worst, this game might eventually turn F2P and that is not a bad thing (for me anyway).

Even in SWTOR with all it's fancy VO and storylines, you are still doing nothing but those types of quests. At least in Tera, you do more than tab-target then facetank a mob to death. There are certainly some side or bonus quests in swtor where you get xp for killing a certain amount of bad monsters or good monsters, but swtor does a great job of intertwining that within the story, also the main story line has very few of those types of quests and really pushes the imersion of a PLOT which to me is very important. Tera seems to revel in the kill 10 ,gather 5 hides, It is like they could not be botherd to think of a story line.
As much as I dislike WoW I have to give them credit for the Cata expanision, the 2 new classes have a fairly decent story line for the first 20 levels, after that unfortunatlely you are thrown into a generic quest line and it is quite jarring. AOC the same, you have thousands of people who praised AOC for their story line and cut scenes, unfortunately for them they gave up the ghost after lvl 20 hopeing their combat would win the day-the excellent combat did not win the day as thousands left. That tells me that their is a big market for a mmo with an excellent story, voice overs, cut scenes, great sound etc.
I will say this just to be fair, it is alot easier for Lotro, swtor, and aoc to come up with great story lines because they are allready built in, it is up to these other companies to hire people who can be creative enough to come up with good story lines

So storyline makes mundane gameplay better or harder to notice? I leveled two characters to 50 in TOR, and I literally didn't die a single time to quest mobs. If you don't care about the storyline, then you are left with gameplay, and TOR offered very little variety in their quest structure. I will take horribly written quests with interesting gameplay over what TOR offered any day. It's a video game, it's something I play and interact with. I really don't care very much about a gripping story that I sit there and watch unfold. It's simply not that interesting to me. I don't read quest text, and I didn't watch any of the quests in TOR. I will never care about the story of why I am killing 10 things or collecting 10 things when the act of actually doing it isn't much fun.
I guess I'm just confused why people think questing in Tera is bad when the gameplay behind it is much more interesting than what any of the current themepark MMO's offer.

I was a heavy siege participant, played templar and did my job as well getting medals without problem even with asmos attacking me, main diference? aion have at least 3 maps you can go during lvling from lvl 25 to 40 you could jump free from ganker that way plus difently from a beta you when do things you care for what you do. and i'm saying pvp. I still find funny people defending ganking as pvp. also in aion you get AP for killing the rival faction, tera no, you get infamy and later you see the pks, in safe zones because people of his lvl was there to kill then or complain people are killing then when they are trying to make a party for SB. at least in L2 we could farm reds for they equips in tera no.
and in a side note i'm not complaining and mentioning a fact, I killed pks a lot faster then they group could kill me. but is also funny someone complaining about a complain, I bet you are some lame pks who can pvp on his lvl, its ok, you need to think you are good on something.

I never got when question became this all important thing in mmorpgs. I mean seriously do people now days seriously play mmorpgs for the quest? I mean its good to have intesting quest and all for some people (and people like me who don't give a damn even if the quest was in other languge as long as we know wtf we need to do to get exp) but honestly with the speed at which western mmorpgs so quest is worthless in a way. You use it to cap, thats all quest is there for and you cap so quickly it barely matter at all in the time you play an mmorpg. Hell i'll play a pure grind game with no quest if the game machanics are good. Since when has questin became a core reason why people play mmorpgs? I thought it was the mmo part coz or else single player games outside mmorpgs no matter what.

Tera has multiple channels in PVP areas. Getting ganked over and over? Try changing channels... not exactly like a ganksquad is going to chase a single person from channel to channel when they can sit in the highest pop channel with tons of targets.
Yes, you're right. If I feel like fighting and you are red, I will kill you. Sorry if that insults your internet fighting honor, but I really don't care very much.

again with this change channels? dude think about one little thing you change channels they do the same, most pks hop channels when people go hunt then or to hunt people who jsut changed channels, again think before posting things like this.

again with this change channels? dude think about one little thing you change channels they do the same, most pks hop channels when people go hunt then or to hunt people who jsut changed channels, again think before posting things like this.
Why would I chase you to a low pop channel when I could stay in channel and have more people to fight? The only reason would be to extract tears.
I have a question for all the people complaining about the "kill 10 rat" quests. How is it different than any other themepark MMO out right now? Even in SWTOR with all it's fancy VO and storylines, you are still doing nothing but those types of quests. At least in Tera, you do more than tab-target then facetank a mob to death. Some of the quest mobs i.e. BAM's will brutally rape your face if you stand there and press 1,2,3,4,5 like you do in other MMO's. At least the kill quests in Tera remain interesting because the combat system doesn't allow you to drift off into la-la land half way through a fight. In the majority of themeparks the quest mobs never even threaten to kill you.
I don't think Tera is anything special, but to complain about the quests is to complain about every quest in every themepark MMO out there. You are either killing something, picking something up, activating something, or a combination of the three. It's pretty much the same in every game. Why complain about it here?
I guess I'm just confused why people think questing in Tera is bad when the gameplay behind it is much more interesting than what any of the current themepark MMO's offer.
well i guess we will agree to disagree, by the way you must be an excellent player if you did not die once, congradulations. Indeed, I'm not saying you're wrong for thinking story is important. I leveled two characters to 50 to experience different playstyles and companions. I didn't really like how Bountry Hunter felt at 50, so I tried a Sith Inquisitor. It had nothing to do with the storyline.
The combat in Tera is interactive. You can't just stand there and expect to come out unscathed. In TOR, you click on a mob, run up to it, and beat it's face in. You don't even have to move out of the fire on normal quest mobs. Maybe it was the two classes I played, but I never once felt like I was challenged while leveling.
In Tera, I attempted to solo a BAM, misjudged the timing on a dodge, and ended up as a wet spot on the ground. Even normal quest mobs can do significant damage. BAMs can one shot you. I am constantly moving, judging when to dodge, when to attack and how. I never did that in TOR. I stood there and used my highest DPS abilities in order and the mobs just melted.
I tried it out this weekend and was quite disappointed (mind you, I didn't have any real expectations).
Things I disliked:
1) World looked blurry. Not sure if this is intentional or something just in beta, but all the graphics had a blurry feel to them that maked it look out of focus (except the text).
2) Boring quests. After playing TOR, I didn't realize how the genre needs to move away from this. (To the person above who doesn't care about quest or storyline: I actually do. The whole initial wonder of MMOs has worn off on me since I've been playing since UO launch. I try to read storylines and can't stand boring quests which this is full of).
3) Although many are calling the combat new and innovative, I wasn't impressed. Sure, tab targeting is nice to move away from, but I've already played games with this sort of combat (e.g. Chronicles of Spellborn, Tabula Rasa). Those games, along with AoC show you can't maintain a sub purely on combat mechanics.
4) Cutesy is ok, but this went a bit overboard. It seems like it is more "Korean"-like than Aion. Wouldn't have been so much an issue but with 1-3 added, is sort of a gamebreaker for me.
TLDR: in short, not worth a paid sub. Seems more like a f2p or b2p to me. Don't see this one lasting long on a paid sub.
Like I have said, island of Dawn is cutesy but stem away from the island and a lot of the zones become dark and evil and some are just visually appealing like the Jungle.
They only started the game cutesy, why, I don't know.
Also, as far as the blurryness goes change lighting enrichment from 2 to 1 and you would be amazed, I really wish they would make one the default as nobody likes blurry visuals. Force AAx8 and CSAAx32 on your graphics card as well(hopefully they add in this option in the actual game on release).

sounds like you are looking for more than what mmos offer these days. I doubt you will find what you are looking for and as such will need to either stop playing or lower your bar a bit. I didn't have problems with blurry worlds. If you are talking about the background, then maybe.
As for the quests, yes, it is generic, but I don't see any mmo that would break out of that mold (GW2 included). All things break down to kill X amount of Y mob or collect X amount of Y item. The only difference is that instead of looking for an NPC with an ! over their head, the quest will automatically appear when you walk into a zone.

You like the combat and that is fine, but an mmo is more than combat. I am still waitng for you to tell me how the gameplay is so much more interesting than Any Of The Current Themepark Games-that is a very strong statement and I would love to hear your reasoning on that?
Originally posted by Jakdstripper here is the thing about Tera. like 99% of all Asian mmos it uses the animation as a global cooldown for all skills and abilities. so, wile the animation for that particular ability is taking place you cannot move your character. now tihs is fine for those character that have really fast animations ( like ranger, sorcere ) but for the slower melees ( like Beserker, lancer) you cand defenately feel the "rooted" mechanic.
It's supposed to be 'rooted'. Think of fighting games like streetfighter and tekken: You can't jus tmove around willy nilly and mash buttons. You either attack or you move.
This makes combat more tactical. Do you move out of the way or do you attack and risk being hit? This is what it's all about and what makes the combat actually fun.
Compare this to 'faster' games like WoW where a friend of mine once tanked an ICC boss during WotLK (using a paladin) while literally rolling his face over the keyboard. That's what combat in most other mmo's usually amounts to. Hit your cooldowns and avoid the nasty patches on the floor if there's any - No thought about aiming, blocking or moving beyond avoiding 'death zones'.
After playing the last beta weekend I found the combat to feel refreshing. It was a nice change but it wasn't enough to get me excited for the game. I have to say, Tera is probably the most underwhelming MMO hype-wise that I've seen so far (imo). In the mix of all these anticipated titles (SWTOR, GW2, TSW, D3), I feel like Tera will be left behind in the dust and become the MMO that could've been.
For some reason I don't see it catching on to be (very) successful in the West.
Comments

With action combat you don't need so much crowd control.

so you want AoC have a worse combat setting?.....
Wow just ... wow...

Why would I chase you to a low pop channel when I could stay in channel and have more people to fight? The only reason would be to extract tears.
well i guess we will agree to disagree, by the way you must be an excellent player if you did not die once, congradulations.
