This is mmorpg.com. The argument is never over.

Yeah I'm sort of confused. Add now the complexity of obtaining Gold into the mix:

that just adds to the confusion! I would not be surprised if the cash shop comes out with something called "Z Pay."

The buy to play model is not a charitable endeavor by the developers just to break even. They are after profit like many other developers, however, they do not believe in the subscription model. It's archaic and inherently shady.

"“The thing I would say [about not having a subscription fee] is that we actually have the continued support development model that encourages us to make cooler things than anyone else… If we have to sell you additional content like microtransaction content or anything like that, we have to give you something that you’re going to want to buy. We have to earn your money.”

“We don’t get to say, ‘Oh well, you know, we don’t have to release this content this month, since they’re all going to give us their subscription fee anyways. Let’s just wait until next month and release this cool thing.’ We’re actually kind of bound because if we need income, if we need this game to make some money, we better provide things that people want to buy."

-PCGamer interview with Eric Flannum, 2010

Their current models allows them to provide players with things they WANT to buy, not NEED to buy, such as cosmetics, bonus utilities, or time saving itesm that have virtually no impact on how another person experiences the game whatsoever.

I do not know about you buy time saving for me is a need item. I value my time and if I can save it I would buy the item hence i do like it in the shop. So one person's definition of need is different from another person's understanding. I still do not like the cash shop. I really hate the gem idea too.

It's not really an "idea" so much as it is an iteration of a system that's been successfully used in other games integrated into their own.

Also, my definition of need qualifies as anything that, without, would objectively hamper or take away from the gaming experience. You could literally play the game exactly how you would have normally without knowing the cash shop existed. Other people gain experience and karma slightly faster? Some players have a unique dress, or superfluous utilities like character slots and bank tabs?

Excluding the "special key" because we don't actually know how the chests function specifically in the game, you could play the game without ever finding out there's a cash shop. Because the entire game's there for you! You paid for that extraordinary amount of content with your $60, they're not holding you from anything and they don't award power to players who pay with real cash.

I always had this opinion, but it never bothered be because it's specifically for convienence and making ArenaNet money. In no way did I ever think this violated the inegrity of the game because, at the end of the day, it's skill that reigns when both players acquired the items necessary to perform their chosen builds. (Though some builds are geared towards countering others) >.>

And where the skill unlocks in the original cash shop when it came out?

Yes. The PvP unlock packs were in the game since the start. Although as others have said, everything could be unlocked through both PvE and Balthazar (PvP) points.

This thread is similar to that one, so if you want to continue discussion, please do so there.
