As I heard currently there is no 'bubble chat' in GW2. ,nor there is even 'optional but turned off cause it is beta' or any hint that there will be.
I think that is SERIOUS thing missing , especially that Event open world system is great thing that has a potential for socializing or just simply chatting between people that meet.
Using local channel that all people from whole zone chat or quiet ninja invites for grouping or mass whispering between players kinda erm is not fun to say at least...
Someone can say that there is /local or /whisper or /team chat channgels ,but it is not same thing.
That is especially surprising that there is bubble chat as seen on relased 'aprroved / offical' videos ,but it seems it is only used by NPC's and 'automatically' when player character is under specific consitions - like in videos when character is attacked by some 'frozen' kind of attack there is bubble appearing automatically "I am freezing" or something similar.
So it is coded already , just players cannot use it.
As some ppl can remember it is kinda big issue in Swtor as it is lacking this basic feature as well.
I hope Arena.net allow players to use bubble chat as well ,but I think community giving support for this feature maybe could help.
What do you think about whole "issue" ?

Wtach this video of dynamic event going on and yes there are bubble chats in game.
there are, but i do agree with OP, if there were no chat bubbles the game would be totally unplayable. One of main features im looking for, when trying a new game are -
1) graphics (models more than graphics)
2) gameplay
3) chat bubbles
Say NO to games without chat bubbles. ill start
NO!
Indeed i wouln't want a game without chat bubbles anymore
NO
BOOYAKA!
I'm relatively confident that they will add it in soon, as I'm sure it was frequently requested during the beta weekend.

@Op
THIS.
btw. I just watched whole 34 min of this video.
There is bunch of NPC's 'talking' through chat bubbles and there is sort of 'automatic chat bubbles' when you use buff or you're under 'condition' like struct with some frost attack or something else.
BUT
You still cannot actively type and have a conversation via chat bubbles.
I really really hope that they will add it for release.
It is really really important imo and best thing it would FIT PERFECTLY into game and events.
Also it should appear in local or special /near chat if you type something via chat bubble if they add them ,so you can 'hear' if someone say something via chat bubble and you're turned 'back' to them cause you're fighting or running or whatever.
Lol chat bubbles is the first thing I switch off when I start a game
Unless like it seems in GW2 it will be really helpfull/needed to have it on.
I do as well... why on earth are chat bubbles important to ppl? They are in the way, ugly and a HUGE immersion breaker. We have a chat LOG for a reason.
From what I have read, role players like to use them. It makes it easy to track their conversations.
how? they disappear and I would think they would be a HUGE nono for RPers... Think about it.. words dont pop up over our heads when we talk only to have it disappear and be gone forever in 5 seconds.. we store the info in our brain and process it(like a chat log). That is my thinking, I am not an RPer but I like the concept.
i'd rather have a chat log/box somewhere out of the way of the main part of the screen tbh, or if they do have chat bubbles, the option to not display them, as they ruin the effect, too much of a visual spoil effect, i havent yet played a game where they actually improved the gameplay in any way at least. so not having chat bubbles is a bit of a no brainer.
I imagine it's because it gives a way to focus on the person who's typing. Much like a voice draws your eyes to the person who's talking, chat bubbles would draw your eyes to the person typing. It would also mean their eyes aren't glued to a chat box, they could just use MSN for that.
Should be chat bubbles, however they should be disabled during WvW due to it cluttering the screen. I don't think there are chat bubbles atm though. There are some random things that are said by players that pop up, but not used for chatting.
cool i thought it was just me my wife and i cut them off too, most of the time i barely see them. I'd rather have a nonevasive symbol that someone spoke on my creen, this will make me look at the chat menu. maybe something blinks on the character or around them.
ArenaNet just added Eye Colour customisation to the game. They will add chat bubbles eventually.
I personally like bubble very much, i hope they will implement them on players too. The only real problem is when you go in some place with a lot of players that spam, maybe they could put an option to enable them for party members, friends or whatever make sense.
I also saw in some video that the bubble can come from the members icon in a party rather than directly from the character on the screen which seam like a really nice option to keep the screen clean during parties and still have them, so ye i just hope they will implement those for player too if they haven't yet.
Forget chat bubbles. I like the placement of the chat when in a party. Party leader chat goes right next to their party frame. Brillaint! I always turn off chat bubbles though. If I didn't, my window would be cluttered with TMI.
Far more important features to be concerned about: ex. the ability to change the hotkeys to your bars.
In Rift I ran through the 9 months or so without the use of Vent or other voice chat system. Chat bubbles help a lot in dungeons with small groups to bring attention to some action that needs to be done as it is a significant change in my fiield of view, where as a chat box just scrolls up another line of purple and it doesn't draw your attention to it. Any chat bubble system would be more valuable with significant ability to customize it.
You just want to be comic book heroes, admit it!
the reason i like chat bubbles is that people reads them. When in a raid if you type in raid chat noone reads or almost during fight.. if you yell and there is a chat bubble right in their screen they will react accordingly
You're correct. The game should read to us what other people are saying. That would be the most immersive thing evah!
Until then can I haz my chat bubblezz?
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
The reason I use chat bubbles is because when I'm talking to other people, like in a 5 man group, I don't have to stare at my interface log, but can look at my character or the world in general and still be able to read what people are saying. It's the same thing as proc indicators like Power Auras, I would rather know a proc just happened by a visual indicator near my character than to stare at hotbars all day.
Yep i also think that watching the chat is more immersion breaking than looking at the bubbles, because with bubble you alctually see the world, and not just a computer window, if that make any sense.
Please jesus I hope they add chat bubbles.
That was one of the many reasons SWTOR felt lifeless

Because they tell the worlds background, i find them quite usefull, as long as they are a bit transluscent they are far from annoying to a roleplayer.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
