First negative preview of GW2?

"Outside of these quests, there are NPCs scattered throughout the map with various errands that need running, having borrowed a library of excuses from teenagers as to why they can’t just do it themselves. You’ll be fetching, escorting, collecting, and killing ‘til your fingers bleed, as the basic Guild Wars 2 quest structure does little to distance itself from the modern MMO formula established seven years ago by World of Warcraft."

"In theory, it sounds like a solid system, but it falls apart in practice. It’s hard to gauge how fun these quests will be from the beta – the game world was so clustered with players that every event was a disorganised mosh-pit of spells and death, squandering feelings of individual contribution, spitting in the face of the ‘my story’ vibe that’s established throughout the singleplayer portions."

"It’s a shame that the initial story appeal that emphasises roleplaying soon falls by the wayside, the game reverting to the same formula, packaged differently and decorated with a few interesting twists, not differentiating itself enough in an increasingly crowded MMO market. It is free-to-play, so for anybody who wants a similar experience to Blizzard’s behemoth without the subscription fee, Guild Wars 2 may please. Disappointing at this stage, though."

Now I am still buying it of course and really looking forward to it along with Secret World, but this is honestly the only preview I've seen that seems to be entirely negative and groupit in with the other MMO games as if there is ZERO novelty in it....

    It has begun! :O :O

Im fine with it as long as there are RP servers though.  Im not expecting CoX level of RP novelties though.  Seriously those colored textbubbles were friggin awesome

I am fine with it as well, but I am cautious because certain snippets from the preview seem  truly troubling for the first time...

Every game ever made is going to have negative previews, its bound to happen with GW2, especially as more and more people are let into beta. Some people won't like it, some people will bash it to just try to be cool, all you can do is make up your own mind by watching videos/trying it yourself.

Same website that gave TOR a 9.0 rating. Not too concerned.

It is good to have some negative reviews here and there to keep the hype at healthy proportions.

Agreed, both about the RP servers and CoX's chat bubbles.

Exactly. They comment on Gw2 in style 'been there done that' while swtor is truly just that, and yet they gave it nearly the perfect score...

Reknown hearts ARE essentially upgraded standard MMO quests :) Did anyone ever say otherwise?

Also, Forbes gave a 'meh' preview, but in the comments the guy basically admitted he didn't have a clue what was going on (i can only assume he's mentally impaired when it comes to MMO's), so he spent the weekend doing reknown hearts and simply grinding mobs instead of exploring and getting into what the game is about. He also never figured out how to use map travel, go figure ;)

Totalbiscuit and richard cobbet absolutely love the game. That's all i need to care about, as those guys generally align their game preferences with mine pretty well.

So he is disappointed by the Reknown Hearts part of the game?

They are certainly entitled to their opinion, as we all are.

I didn't realize that.  Kind of puts the reviewer's use of the word "formulaic" into context.  But then again, it seemed his favorite thing about GW2 was the personal story part anyway.  Maybe he just digs a good story.

IF everyone like this game, I would have to hate it just on principle.

But since it's from a guy who called SWTOR foward thinking and innovative. I'll take that as a double blessing.

And hows that not fun? i dont see anithing negative about that post except the writer. Also if i was an adventurer in a land far far away i would love if all my adventures were covered in chaos and death .

How ironic for a guy who rate ToR 9.0 to bash gw2 on innovation and wow similarity.

  • WolvardsWolvards Member Posts: 650

As he only compares it to WoW, and rated TOR at a 9.0, i'm not taking it seriously, and it also seemed like he didn't really get into the game, negative feedback is good, but to me it kinda seemed like no matter what they were going to write a negative review

This is what I expected from the negative side of things, less about the actual game, more about percepetions, and misconceptions, most negatives will be backlash toward anything that isn't totally different than the rest of the MMO's, as too many had an idea that GW2 would be an all new all original MMO experience.

    RMT

Not a whole lot else needs to be said about negatives with GW2 and how you should  probably just focus on something else for the "If I play it for 3 months I got my moneys worth, who cares?" view point..

I don't mind criticism. I just don't like it when it is misplaced. From what I read the player does not know the difference between Reknown hearts and personal story quests.

If I had said "Raids are boring, they are just like dungeons but with more people." You would tell me that they are two completely different things with different dynamics.

Play for fun. Play to win. Play for perfection. Play with friends. Play in another world. Why do you play?

Everyone knew TOR was like WOW, many thought GW2 would have nothing resemebling WOW, the backlash from misconceptions begins.

any site that gave ToR a 9.0 should NOT be taken serious.

If he rated TOR a 9.0, then GW2 must be amazing. The review just pumped me up even more.
