personally i don't play A GIRL, i just have some female chars and some male chars.
you guys thinking that all femals chars are played by girls need to realize one thing:
MMOs are no dating service ^^
or are you saying only blondes may play blonde chars too? and big boobed avatars, you actually think all big boobed chars are played by big boobed girls IRL?
i think anyone who goes into an MMO with an ASL kind of mentality needs to step away from the keyboard and get a life, MMO's as you say are not dating services, and the OP makes one huge, as in massive, assumption, and that is, that girls don't play male avatars.. which they do.
i think the longer you play MMO's for, the more you realise just how dumb this subject is.
I think what disturbs a lot of people is the fact that this often goes the other way around. A lot (not all) of male players that play female characters either do so specifically to mess with and/or receive special treatment from other male players through flirtatious actions while some others do it because they're gay (please note, I have nothing against gays) and just want to flirt with guys.
A lot? Really? I'd be surprised if it was really "a lot" given that I've been playing MMORPGs (many different games) as my primary leisure pursuit for eight years now and I have never seen any male player do that.
Yeah, I think people who think that's "a lot" of it, still aren't quite getting it. Some of us just like playing female characters. It really has nothing to do with anyone else.
The only thing that bugs me is that its become so common, especially in games like Aion. Just feels a bit immersion breaking when most of the population consists of females - who mostly look like strippers and models, of course.
When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.
Now let me say ahead, I always respect everyone's decision what to play in a MMO. It is just a feeling. Let me explain. Now sure, as gay guy, I do not have the appeal to "see a girl's bum" while I play. But here is the thing. When I create MMO characters, I NEVER make "my idea man". And boy, I tried. Several times in MMOs I create a male character that looked as my "ideal looking man", and it SPOOKED THE HELL OUTTA ME. I can't even say why. But the idea to play a char that looks like my ideal man, was... wrong. It was something so outside anything I could identify or accpet. I always felt it was just wrong and spooky, to have some "cute puppet", some "love doll" or whatever. It felt just freaky. And that is why I shudder at the thought, no matter if you play same gender or opposite gender: this idea to create a character as "your ideal looking girl/guy" is what just feels so spooking me off.
For me, a character I play must represent something of *me*, some part of myself externalized. (Is that a word?) For instance, I loved my EQ2 Sarnath and my Fae Ranger. Both represented character traits of me. Both where a part of me, in a way I could not describe. Or my dark skinned characters I make in most MMOs as main. He is me, for reasons I can not explain. But he is FAR from the type of guy I want. I mean, I know some people would even play any random char because they don't care at all. But when you play a char so many hours as you do in a MMO, does it not evoke *some* feeling within you?
And that is what I don't get, how can you play a char months or even years which is your "love interest"? That sounds just so... bizarre. So it gives me more than a little doubt in players who do this. I know from experience with female gamers who talked to me, that female chars are usually treated better. If they enter older MMOs, they are WAY more likely to get help, money and other stuff. And that, shall we say, ulterior motive is what I also kind of suspect. Like they know, ok with a girl char people will be more helpful and nice. Which is the case. Female chars DO get more help.
So what do you think about it? And to you guys who play girls, how do you feel doing that? I wonder.
i play a female toon in most games for one good reason - the animations are smoother. the character is usually smaller and its easy on the eye in that it doesn't distract from the action. i find most male toons look like they're walking with a pole up their butt.
on this subject, though, in fairness to the other sex, my wife always rolls male toons. she rolls male toons so young males won't keep coming up to her, taking off their clothes and dancing next to her for attention and don't try to pm her with their feeble attempt at sexual innuendo.
she knows its feeble, because she's had to put up with mine for years and there's nothing you little young'uns can say she hasn't already heard and groaned about.
edit: i'm trying to say sometimes we choose the gender of our toons based not on our dating preference, or how we see ourselves, but from the perspective of game mechanics or trying to avoid the unwanted attention of 12 yr old boys who've just discovered what kleenex might be good for other than their noses.
Luckly im open minded and not narrow minded on this subject i play what i like in Darkfall i played a WOLF in Asherons call2 i played a Tumerok sort of lizard on walking straight on 2 legs.
I played also female characters and ill start with main as i see it now a Sylvari in Guild Wars 2 as FEMALE i laughing at those who freaking out if a male plays a female lol.

Not sure what part of "not all" you guys didn't catch. There's no need to get so defensive. If you're not one of the ones that do, you're not one of the ones that do. I'm not attacking anyone here.
The truth of the matter is, however, that there are a great deal of people who actually do this. I've known plenty of people who openly admit to it; I've seen people do so who dont admit to it; I've seen people do so unintentionally when some guy starts flirting with them and helping them out and they just go along with it for the easy ride.
I'll be honest here and say that I can't take females performing feats of strength seriously. These tank top clad, 100 lbs heroines knocking out full grown men in movies and on television are just a farce; visual accessories.
Of course I grew up in an era where Schwarzenegger, Hogan, He-Man & Optimus Prime were the masculine idols of the day.
The rest of us who also grew up in this era didn't turn out to be sexist conservatives either.
I guess historical accounts of Warrior-Women dominating in the battlefield is also something that shouldn't be taken seriously?
I guess Joan de Arc, Boudicca, Trieu Thi Trinh, Gudit, the Trung Sisters, Artemisia, Fu Hao, Ahhotep I, Zenobia, or Tamar shouldn't be taken seriously.
I mean, it's not like they were Schwarzenegger or Hogan.
Oh wait... being a beefy large character doesn't automatically qualify you to be a master of combat and violence? Doh! What were us sexist pigs thinking? TROLOLOLOL!
"If I have to look at an arse for hours... I'd rather look at a woman's arse"....
Okay.
But... does that mean you'd get a sex change IRL? I mean, afterall, if you're going to have to wake up in the morning and wash your private personal parts... you'd probably rather be washing female parts as opposed to a twig 'n berries, eh?
....
I don't play female characters.
Why? I generally try to make my characters look as much like me as I possibly can. I would say for the sake of immersion, if no other reason.
....
I never had any desire to play with Barbies growing up. Why would I want to play some tankini wearing fembot now?
....
Also, I have no desire whatsoever to be confused for a female. Little emotes and all of that stuff.. no thanks.
Just... no.

I think it's hilarious to raid with people for the first time. You see 25 people in the raid, and a good portion of them are female characters. Then you hear the voice in Vent... and it really does seem pretty odd.

Agreed
"The King and the Pawn return to the same box at the end of the game"
Is it just me or am I the only male who isn't so perverse and uncontrollable that they never even fathomed about staring at the butts of their characters while they played?
Honestly, before I read it on the internet, I never even fathomed the common excuse "I dont want to stare at a guy's butt all day when playing a game! Gimme some of dat girl booty!"
No offense and I don't mean to sound elitist or better-than-animal, but I don't stare at anyone's butts when I play games. If I want to stare at butts, I put down my games and go do something else. I play games to have fun, not to multi-task to grind and masturbate.
Mostly I stare at whats infront of my character, or my character's weapon or chest armor or cape, not their butts. Nor do my natural instincts ever cause my eyes to drift to a male's butt.
Sometimes I wonder if the people who use that excuse "I'd rather look at a girls butt when playing than a male butt." are closet homosexuals living in severe fear of coming out. If you are so tempted to look at male butts when playing a male character, then try coming to terms with your sexuality instead of trying to avoid it in fear by trying to force yourself to look at a female butt.
No to derail... but regarding the 'open mind' comment...
Amazing that people really love freedom of speech and free thought.... as long as your opinion doesn't go against theirs and as long as your beliefs don't counter theirs.

I think we were having a semi-intelligent discussion in this thread on an interesting topic. Let's get back to that, if at all possible.

Maybe they just prefer to look at female toons, over looking at male toons. I wouldn't think that a guy that prefers to look at a female absolutely has to be homosexual. I really don't follow your logic. Whatever pleases the eye. If in your case that's a male character, then that's your preference. That's all.

Um....what?
I think you misunderstood my last post. I didn't mention anything about gays. I was talking about guys who use female characters to get free help, items, and favors from other guys in MMOs.
How you took that as gay bashing is beyond me. Maybe you're the prejudice one here to think such a thing.
Roleplaying? No worries, 99% of the modern gaming population doesn't.
But the topic is tired, dust blowing in the Sahara. The responses are rote.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
As I've said before, when you play these games you are basicly playing with electronic dolls. So who cares what sex they are ultimately? Also anyone who thinks of thier e-dolls as love interests, or even little mini e-me's needs to have their heads examined. It's a game, IT IS NOT A LIFE. Get over it and concern yourself about something that really matters.
By this logic you must be really freaked out if someone plays a necromancer skeleton dude, or a small guinea pig creature, like Asura, or even a big cow or a huge cat person.. regardless of gender xD
The whole point of MMO''s is to be someone else, therefore it is *weird* that you would want to play someone that looks like you So back at ya :P

You are a little incorrect, sir, and here's why...
There is no predifined way to enjoy a game that doesn't involve superceding the TOS.
This means that everyone is free to play their character however they like. It simply leads to a conflict of interests among players. Really, though, who wants to play in a world where everyone is the same?
In older MMOs where the worlds were so immersive that you'd end up identifying with your toon, yeah I was also slightly spooked by guys playing female toons. Now it's a different story. MMOs are horrible and totally unemmersive, I no longer indentify with my toons and I don't think anyone else does either. So who cares what gender people play, it's just a toon in a video game, not an alter ego in a virtual world.
i roll female characters only when i like the character models but i dont feel like role playing storywise, so i usually have both male and female characters. If the game has a really good and in depth Lore i role play a male toon and try to take my toon deep in the story. Also when i roll a female i dont go around behaving like one -.- lol so i feel as normal as if im rolling a male toon. Its a game after all, im not dressing like a gal and going out role playing a one in RL (although it sounds like a fun halloween costume).
Its all fun and games until someone rolls a female toon and pretends to be one....
Now that I reflect back on it, I think that like you Elikal, I have created characters that represented aspects of my personality. To be honest, most of my mains have been male since Precu SWG, with the exception of APB which I also loved.
First off, working in the healthcare field and having that natural, nurturing inclination, it doesn't seem to far a stretch to aknowledge that I might feel very comfortable playing a female avatar, since in our society females are often times considered to be more the nurturing gender. Also, I was raised by women and work overwhelmingly with women, so again there is this comfort relating to the female gender.
Secondly, I am very creative. I write short stories, poetry, draw, paint and sculpt. I think for me personally, if I were to personify creativity and inspiration and give it a gender, it would be female. But that is just my perception. Maybe this is a hard concept for people to related to though, not sure.
Thirdly, on a subconscious level I believe I may have a higher than average ability to empathize, as evidenced by the fact that when I dream, I often dream I am other people. I will dream that I am different races, sometimes male, sometimes female. Sometimes I dream that I live in other times. I usually observe the dream from what I call God mode, watching the participants within the dream as events unfold, and then I become someone in the dream. But that ability to empathize to such a degree I feel is also a femine trait or quality. But again, perhaps this is just my prejudice.
So when I created my first and second mmo character in Precu SWG, it was very natural that I pick a female character even though I am male. She represented my creative, adventurous and empathetic aspect, because I had grown tired of killing in fps and wanted to express another side of myself. I had no intention of tricking people, getting free stuff, or acting out on some closeted gay fantasy. I'm very straight. I love women on every level, beyond even the physical. There is no taboo against being gay in my psyche or my social circle and I would freely admit it if that were the case. But I am hopelessly straight and am very happy.
My third character in PreCu SWG was a male. I suppose he represented me in my totality with my male personality traits more strongly personified. But I started him out as a skinny little freckled red headed kid. Creating him was like...giving birth to the real me. My friends in my clan immediately adopted him and over the course of many months he grew (with the help of a master image designer) from an impetuous boy into a dutiful solider of the Empire, which happened to feel conflicted about his role in the war and was in love with a Rebel woman.
From that point on I've almost exclusively played male characters, but I do like to make a female character now and again, and when I do people are usually convinced that I am a woman. I'm a good actor, or maybe I'm not acting but just expressing that creative, nurturing, empathetic aspect that is my nature. But no game since PreCu SWG has inspired my role playing instincts very strongly. I feel very sad about this, but I need an open world to live and play in. My creative mind is too big to be boxed in by some little sharded, theme park world.
Sorry this got so long, but I have no world to live in right now, just my imagination and sometimes forum boards. I thought I would give a more thoughtful answer than usual and it got overlong.
I guess most of us dont make a character so we can fantasize about boning them. Maybe we just want a good looking character. For alot of straight guys, a good looking character is a woman.

Agreed.
I think this is also very true. There are times when one gender does not look as good in game as the other. In that case I tend to pick the character that looks the most pleasing to my artistic eye.

A lot?
If there is one who dont get it its you and your GAY remarks is clearly from someone who hate gay,s. Your whole reply is offensive and prejudice so its logical some are on defensive mode when a narrowminded reply like this pop up on forum.
You guys need to relax and respect others dicisions instead condem it OPEN your mind free up space in your brain for love and understanding instead of hunting down those who dont think like you and try CRUCIFY them like in the DARK AGES.
We still live in freeworld so give up your witchhunt or go live in ...(fill in country that aloud such condemnations) or something where you can condem others for eternity we dont need you here:P

^^
i roll female characters only when i like the character models but i dont feel like role playing storywise, so i usually have both male and female characters.
Agreed.
I think this is also very true. There are times when one gender does not look as good in game as the other. In that case I tend to pick the character that looks the most pleasing to my artistic eye.
