What made SWG fun for you?

HarelinHarelin Member UncommonPosts: 409

When I look back at my time in SWG... I had fun. I can't deny that, or else I wouldn't have spent nearly a year with the game. But I also share in the common gameplay complaints and, really, I'm hard pressed to understand what I actually DID in the game for that year.

I suppose, in retrospect, it was the social aspects... the community, and a great guild that just made it more fun to be around with just everything in general (PvP in particular). I don't see how anyone could have had much fun in the game with a good guild, but to each his own.

Putting aside your differences with SWG... what did make the game fun for you, those of you that spent a good amount of time with it? I think that'd be the ultimate insult to yourself if you were able to admit you spent months in a game that you hated.

    1) Community .... people make a MMORPG fun .... a good guild, an active player city , events

    2) Star Warsy ... for all the whining about SWG not being Star Wars .... I always get the thrill of doing my own Star Wars Saga when we attack a Star Destroyer in with a flight of B-Wings, or hunt a Rebel Corvette with Tie Bombers and Agressors. When we are having a guild-internal PvP battle around the Rebel-Imp Battlesite on Naboo. When I dance in an Ewok village. When I sell my droids in Coronet.

There are other great MMORPGs out there ... but I am not as attracted to them as to the only Star Wars game.

    3) Space ... Jump to Lightspeed added so much to the fun of SWG !

    4) Customization .... that I can change my appearance, clothing .. pick where I live and place a house ... decorate it with stuff I acquired .. making my character and his residence UNIQUE ... is for me one of the great advantages of SWG. When I started playing the free Anarchy Online and had done my character customization in under 1 min i had a kinda culture shock. WoW is similar.

    5) Crafting ... SWG tops any other MMORPG in that area IMHO. If I want PvP there are so many balanced multi-player first person shooters (I like Counterstrike and variants, but Star Wars Battleground is fun too !) ... I dont have to do that in SWG except for fun.

And I am still enjoying the game since summer 2003.

  • I am actually hoping to go back to SWG, i miss the look, story and community of the game and theres also a great guild system.

But what made it for me is my personnel character, plus i made a story when a guild i was in the 'Brood Revolution' which had a type of civil war?

The free-form environment, even though most of the planets are empty there is a definite sense that you are travelling WORLDS rather than zones.  Of course, the generic terrain isn't perfect but it still seems like it's an environment.

I also like the lack of a level-based class system.  You can do whatever you want whenever you choose to, and if you choose to stop grinding after mastering a profession, you don't need to worry about that.  This also helps when it comes to newbies grouping with Masters.  The way they designed this was great... until solo groups.  If we could get around solo groups, they have something really unique: A player base that isn't divided by numbers.

Solo groups have been gone for 2 months now :-)  And the new group looting system will make grouping between strangers even more attractive as you can see much better who loots what where and when.

And yes ... newbies and masters CAN mix which is not the case in many other MMORPGs ... i see it in WoW that friends of mine play on my computer while I am at work. Even if seperated by maybe 4 levels (lets say 20 and 16) you cannot really group cause the lower level player would just die all the time if he wants to do anything more than leech.

Hmm..I've noticed this brought up in more than one discussion on SWG: What are 'solo groups'? The phrase just seems to contradict itself =). Just curious as to what people mean when they refer to solo groups.

You have mission terminals that you give you missions to go out and kill things and pay you money. The more skilled you are the higher the level of monster you have to kill and the more money you get. If you are in a group you get the highest payout missions and when the group completes the mission the money is split between them. This is how it's supposed to work.

People would get in a large groups to get the highest payout missions, then do the missions with no one else from the group is around. If there was no one around you would get all of the reward and it wouldn't be split. With the way Buffs and armor are, people can solo the toughest things, so there was really no danger.

One of the most attractive things about SWG in my opinion, was the sheer customization options available for your avatar. You were allowed to construct your character, detail by detail until you got the look you wanted. If at some point you were not satisfied with your appearance, an Image designer could take care of things for you in fairly short order. (I know, this is all a cosmetic thing, but I feel a lot better being in control of how I look than I would looking like a million others that I thought looked goofy to begin with!)

Also, I enjoyed running with a group, shooting the breeze in a camp and other such social gatherings. Unfortunately, these were common experiences only in newbie zones, as solo groups dominated the upper levels...

The sheer feeling of the game clicked well with me as well. I always felt like there was something interesting to do, whether it be sightseeing, hunting, crafting, entertaining, anything. I would always start my characters off with every profession so I had a range of options until I started picking up levels in my chosen profession. When skill points became low, I'd just drop a lesser-used skill set and move on.

Really, I never saw much of anything wrong with the game, aside from the far overpowered buffs and armor, which is apparently slated to be changed in the near future. Sure, some content for certain professions needs desperately to be ironed out or tweaked, but all in all, I found the whole game very interesting.

I'd resub in a heartbeat if I thought the game could feasibly run on 28k. lol

To be honest I had fun with it to, and I probably would have played it a lot longer if the guild I joined there had not moved to another game.  What was it about SWG I loved the most?  Definately the community.  I can't say it was completely filled with awesome people, even though I found some of the very coolest on any game here, I will say that the players here seemed most real.  They had great peeps to group with and those who were downright evil.  By far, SWG's greatest asset was its community and player base, which was good enough to overlook it's mediocre game mechanics.  I almost miss playing sometimes.

Well, unless you completely deleted your character instead of just unsubscribing you can always activate it for a month again and have some fun.

SWG is well known for keeping your toon as it is for up to one year of inactivity (structures for 6 months if maintenance is paid).

And IF you deleted all, you can always try it again with one of the 14 day free trails (inlcuding Space Expansion) that are offered every once in a while (usually on Fileplanet).

And - although I dont play Fantasy MMORPGs atm - the SOE pass (22 bucks for 10 games including SWG, EQ 1 and 2, Planetside and others ) is good value for money for the gamer on a tight budget.

Personally I prefer EVE as a secondary game (and AO as it is free) and I do see WoW a lot as many friends are playing it (the introduction phase .. level 1-10 .. of that game is the new standard by which all MMORPGs should be measured). However, I am not a fan of the fixed career, level to max system ... SWG does it best in that area IMHO.

The fun for me in SWG, as with many MOG games, is the people.  My guild, my town and friends make the game fun.

Also, my achiever game personality made the hunt for badges and jedi fun as well

I liked SWG when it was first released. People would get together to raid the tusken fort or to kill a krayt. You could always get a  pick up group in a cantina but now its kinda barren compared to back then. Most people get buffed up and get a solo group and go on their way. I think it would be nice if they would delete half their servers or merge them so there would be more people on and maybe get back to how it was somewhat :)

I played the 14 day trial version of Star Wars Galaxies and it was my first experience with a MMORPG and it was amazing. I loved it. Huge lands and a cool community. I might even buy it someday

For me it was the community and the player cities. It was nice to have a place in game that you could call your home. A city where you could fing your friends and adventure together.

I also loved the fact that it was well, Star Wars. Then again that is the reason I clicked cancel. I absolutely hated the way the time period was handled in regards to Jedi. It became a joke and that city I used to have friends in deteriorated because so many went to a new village and began to grind for a Jedi slot that frankly was way overated and unecessary to the overall game.

I'm lurking here, long time UO player. Tried SWG but wasn't my cup of tea. Anyhoo, I just wanted to say that the solo group thing is a result of MMO's going mainstream I believe. The titles now attract people not used to the community concept in a videogame. Just adding that in, carry on with your best of SWG thread. :)

i love SWG, its a good game, just way too many bugs, and lag, i got HORRIBLE lag, every other game i ever played ran perfect, except SWG...huh. and every now and then you get that impulse, but then ten seconds later its gone. good game, though, still.
  • ErillionErillion Member EpicPosts: 10,328

I also bitched about lag but frankly speaking most of it was client side on my end. So it was not primarily SOEs fault (except that the servers cant handle large scale PvP battles).

When I switched to 1 GIG RAM and a better graphic card lag disappeared almost completely.

Not sure exactly what it was that kept me playing from release till about 7 montsh ago but I re-subbed yesterday and may bring my other account back as well.  All my stuff is still there and to top it off I got some unexpected veteran rewards which was a nice bonus.  Still haven't tried the yacht out yet but I'm assuming it's a house in space.

The PA I was in was what kept me around so long and then like what was mentioned a few posts up most of them got the urge to grind for a Jedi slot which pretty much shut down our little community.  Getting ready to canx EQ2 but will keep AO as a second option.

Since the second day it was released i played for moer than a year. I was so addicted to the game because of the community and that in the olden days all you wanted to fdo was keep playing so you could buy that nice big houseor go explore on a different planet. I used to always just chill with people in Tyrena but after a while everyone started going to Coronet and all the cities were bassically crap. I bassically spent most of my time chillin and exploring so i never even mastered a profession for a few months. It was just so realistic. But, for some reason the whole game started losing its spunk because retarded fans kept asking for more when i bassically thought the game was perfect. I think im gonna reactivate my account and get the expansion though.image

  • I have to confess I'm not a star wars fan and that I don't like the concept much, but SWG really has nice graphics, sound an unconventional fighting style and alot of costumization/classes for added flavour eveyone loves image

On top of all this, IT HAS THE BEST CRAFTING/RESOURCE SYSTEM I ever had the chance to experience, and this for me is the top KING feature of this game, resources actually shift and change, never 2 alike and the SAME crafting recipe will have different quality, depending on resources used and skill, amazing....simply amazing.

For me if any other game wants to learn from SWG, they'll have to copy it cuz it's just so good it makes me play for almost a year now.image

Been playing for year+ and still fun. Why? Because I never bored. If I run missions and get bored I switch to PVP. If I bored with PVP I switch to exp grind for my future jedi. If I bored with grind I switch to space missions. If I bored with space I switch to loot hunt, etc. Another reason is constant improvement of the game. The new stuff coming to the game every months. Of course there are bugs and exploits but I focus on positive side so those don't bother me much. Oh. And of course the community. I made some really great friends in the game and the game become so much more interresting when you're not soloing it.

    Wish ya all same. ::::09::

My favorite part of SWG was the race customization, classes, in depth economy and the pvp/civil war aspect.

Only things i didnt like were the poor faction weapons and armor, imperial armor . Also the repetative armor wearing... at the time it seemed 90% of people only wore 1 to 2 types of armor, the rest were junk so rebels and imp's looked the same.

MAY 5 will change that all thankfully and both sides will have the glory they both deserve. Finally stormtrooper armor will be great and rebels will have their own armors that look badass.
