They seem to be very much in touch with the fact that they're betting everything on GW2, and if it's crash and burns, it's over. That should be pretty good motivation for not screwing this thing up.
Also, their removal and iteration of several of the "worse" items in the beta seems to suggest that the leaked cash shop was far from finished (mystic keys/golem butlers to open the mystic chests were available in-game, they removed the megaphone, they removed loot bags, and so on).
However (in my opinion ofcourse), they still have some time to screw it up, plus, I think that if we hadn't been so vocal about some of these issues, it might have looked different, so we should still speak up if they go down a bad road. As always though, keep trying to be open about these things though and don't rage at them, but give them critiscism instead.
EDIT: Typo changed, as pointed out below. :P

You mean not.....right?
Good read though
"O’Brien acknowledges, however, that players will need convincing. “The reaction we expect from the world is scepticism. It should be that way because there are a lot of games out there that are doing really dicey things with microtransactions. We hold ourselves to high standards, and as we’ve tested things, we’ve put this stuff in front of our core beta test group and said, ‘you guys should be holding us to [those] high standards.’”
Its good that they realise how much of a turn off microtransactions can be.....hopefully there will only be cosmetic items and account services
Cluck Cluck, Gibber Gibber, My Old Mans A Mushroom
Being vocal and opinionated is one thing and another being boisterous and blabbering incoherency which by far the vast majority were of the latter as they provided nothing of merit in the arguement over the CS. If anything was established it was this... a slightest whiff of a CS and people will nerd rage all over the forums not matter how justified or how benifetial financially it is for the players.
I hope so as well. The current state of the cash shop is definitely P2W/P2C/advantage-for-cash/insert label here.
I am more than happy with the idea, its well past due for a major player to do what several companies have managed to do over the last 4 years...make a fortune on microtransactions.
Turbine made more with microtransactions with DDO than the did with AC1, AC2 and LOTRO combined.
Frogster made almost 30 million in profits last year off of Runes of Magic...thats equal to 2 million $15 subs!
Atlantica Online rakes in a ton...
Why make a game and HOPE you selling millions of copies and can retain subscriptions when you can make that game around microtransactions and keep the money flowing in AND have more possible customers on top of it because you are not only tapping the P2Pers but also the F2Pers.
Its simple. The first Guild Wars was B2P...why the hell not make it B2P with microtransactions?!?!?!?!?
Time to face reality, the genre is evolving and its about time...now if only they would also evolve the GAMEPLAY a little faster as well.
I hope we shall crush...in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations, which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength and bid defiance to the laws of our country." ~Thomes Jefferson
I noticed not once ever you actually explained how the cash shop is even P2W, I mean hell it literally isn't but you for ever claiming it is.
IN4B convience items, experience boosts are onmobs only not completing events where you literally get the most from.
Karma boosts 20% per hour
Gold can't buy everything
Gems static price
Kits and stones can't be used in dungeons and even state you can't use em in wvwvw and pvp
You can't buy the folowing with gems or gold - Tokens/glory/supply(to build, upgrade, etc in WvWvW)/karma
You can't buy power, imagine using those boosts at level 80 in wvwvw you'd look dumb any way lol, karma is subjective but all you'd get is something that adds up statically the same as the rest of level 80 gear but looks different.
Ressurection stones are your teammates, killing those who downed you, you can buy em if you want but you don't need em. Instant travel same thing lol.
Not a gear grind game
Has level scaling,level gear(level 5 can't wear level 80)
Keys do drop in game, chests are still in questions of what they hold
Mircopphone...lol
Last but not least cash shop is not finalized.
Take care and enjoy yourself.
I might get banned for this. - Rizel Star.
I'm not afraid to tell trolls what they [need] to hear, even if that means for me to have an forced absence afterwards.
P2P LOGIC = If it's P2P it means longevity, overall better game, and THE BEST SUPPORT EVER!!!!!(Which has been rinsed and repeated about a thousand times)
Common Sense Logic = P2P logic is no better than F2P Logic.
Well, I wouldn't worry about gameplay not evolving in GW2
For the red. Before I read your post. I was going to say it's "surely p2w" to those stated here. But you shut my negativity down. Good job.
No, but it can buy almost anything:
Consumables? Yes!
Max-quality gear? Yes!
Influence? Yes!
Crafting materials? Yes!
Upgrade components? Yes!
But no, the cash shop doesn't sell power... /rolleyes
The cash shop is not finalized, but as we've seen it definitely has a lot of P2W/P2C/PFP elements. No amount of denial will change that fact. The only variable is whether or not the advantages provided matter to you.
Megaphone would be enough for me to not buy the game at all if that means you have t opay for global chat or zone chat or whatever. Seems good so far from what I've seen gameplay wise. Only thing that would cause me to steer clear of it is dependant on what's in the item shop as there is already too many asian grinders out there where you can buy xp which in this game is irrelevant anyways due to scaling.
This isn't a signature, you just think it is.
It's not irrelevant. It gives you access to higher tiers of content, which in turn gives you access to larger quantities of skill points, which in turn makes you a much more flexible and dominant force in WvW. Higher tiers of content also give you access to better types of crafting materials and items which you can sell on the market. And that's just the experience boost.
Favor boosts make your guild gain perks much faster, causing people in your guild to be much more deadly on the field of battle. I don't know how long it takes to fill up renown hearts, but I imagine latter tiers will have a longer "grind" involved, making the renown boosts more attractive.
You might not personally care about the advantages the cash shop gives to people who pay to cheat, but I do, and no amount of pooh-poohing the advantages will change the fact that they are advantages. I'm hoping they get rid of these items and go back to their original vision of the cash shop.
You can't trade Gems with an NPC for gold, or buy gold directly from the Cash Shop. Paying $$$ for Gems, with the goal of selling those gems to other players on the Marketplace for gold, depends on people in game with spare gold wanting to buy those gems. Character slots, bank slots, bag slots, etc... have their appeal, but these are permanent purchases, not consumable. The consumables we have seen are not particularly powerful and are definitely not economical for the vast majority of players. (I can't see farming gold for any of them and I would even pass on these buffs if I was sitting on a ton of gold and gem prices were pretty low). As a result, demand for Gems on the marketplace are likely to be fairly limited.
Supply and Demand are going to be a key element in the impact of the Gold for Gems market, but you also have to factor in the intrinsic value of time and the cash cost of Gems in the Cash Shop. If a character slot costs $10, how much time spent farming gold to buy the gems to buy a character slot is required before it's just not worth the trouble and effort? One hour? Two Hours? Thirty minutes? Ten? Everyone values their time differently, but the higher the exchange price goes, the fewer people willing to pay that price and the less demand their is for Gems on the marketplace.
It would be a mistake to presume that someone willing to pay $$$ for gems, which they intend to trade in game for Gold, are always going to find demand for those gems or even get a return in Gold that is worth the $$$ they pull from their wallet.
The more money you earn IRL, the more valuable your time and the more attractive paying $$$ for Gems for Gold becomes. The less disposable income you have and the more free time you have to play games, the less valuable you are likely to perceive your time.
The system is likely to bring together people at either extreme, with the majority in the middle having greatly reduced incentive to even bother with the $$$ for Gems for Gold market in any meaningful way.
I shouldn't be any more jealous of the person who has tons of disposable income to trade for relatively uneconomic amounts of gold than I would be of some jobless person who spends 60+ hours a week playing the game. They are each able to trade which ever they find more valuable, time or money, for something that is hard for them to afford because of their lack of the opposite commodity.
For most of us, this market will be a wash.

Everything they removed from the cash shop will be back. Once they get about six months of box sales they'll start working the cash shop hard. Just like all other F2P games they'll find something to make you have to use the cash shop.
I agree with this.
They don't want to hurt launch box sales, but nothing will keep them from adding P2W items later on. It's the cash shop way of doing business. I don't understand why people don't see it for what it is. Anet is no better than any other B2P/F2P team. They want to make money like everyone else.

There's so much cynicism on these boards...
i think almost every interview has been posted to their twitter or facebook page. is it a coincidence that this one was not. also about 30min after this hit the PC gamer site they announced the list of pre-purchase retailer.
I've got the straight edge.
Yes maybe good for those who have money and companys who make millions but for those who just wanne play a honest game its disaster these Cashshops.
Im still gonne buy GW2 np but if i even remotely think when spending cash i can win in PVP im out. I wont spent a dime btw, i never did and never will and i can afford easely more money every month if i want, i play sinds 99 games only and i never bought more then game cost and monthly sub or the f2p game i spent 0% becouse its free to play. Same with DLC for games ive spent 0% for games im not gonne feed the greedy.
Hope to build full AMD system RYZEN/VEGA/AM4!!!

I think even if they thought about it they learned a lesson from Bioware about lying to customers being very bad. Anet would be fools to add P2W later.
the buffs items from shop and items were a cpl things I heard.
All that tells me is that NCSoft wanted to sell those items and the backlash convinced them not to.
Players that are really hardcore will spend a lot of both time and money. Thats the problem. There will always be a minority that can afford to waste both time and money. Imagine someone that plays 12 hours/day and also buys and use all advantage items in the CS all the time. Someone that wants to be the best, wants to be first or whatever goal he/she think is important.
Its not logical to think people that can afford to use the CS have little time to play. Or that people that have time to play all day cant afford to use the CS. Sure, there are people like that. But some will waste both a lot of time and money. Because they can and because they want to do it.
Isn't that in breach of the NDA? Or are you relying on some leaked artwork that is already obsoltete?
why would they be foolish for adding p2w? they would have already sold boxes for a profit. if the desire from the player base was there to buy p2w items they could easily add them. think about how many gamers look up cheat codes, or use in game hacks. people want to win, and some will do anything it takes to do that. including bitching to Anet about not having the top dungeon gear because they dont have time to earn it. the shop can easily be changed at any time. we just better hope the millions of people that play free to play games because they like to p2w don't scream louder then the ones who want nothing to do with p2w. majority rules. they are after all a business and in the end it's about money.
I've got the straight edge.
Because having a view of how things might turn out based on what Frogster or Nexon or any other comapny has done is 'idle speculation' not 'seeing it how it is'. I respect healthy scepticism but thst does not make it 'how it is'.
That's like saying Valve is no better than EA.
