Lifetime subsciption = TSW will go freemium in 1-2 years after release

fenistilfenistil Member Posts: 3,005

All games that offered lifetime went freemium sooner or later.

+

TSW already will have "infrastructure" to do it with close-to-none investments (having sub + cash shop incorpotated into game & game client & game philosophy since day 1)

TSW playerbase from day 1 will be at used-to microtransactions (after all they bought game that have microtransactions right?)

+

Funcom was very enthusiastic aboiut freemium model after AoC went to it - this also was mentioned in investors quarterlty reports

Imho TSW is test bed for Funcom nad more general industry (EA especially since imo there are growing rumors of EA buying Funcom in relatively close future) if you can get away with releasing P2P game , charge for box + subs + cash shop AND then go freemium once boxes stop selling (usually P2P games start to agressively drop box prices at this point , but going freemium instead and broading playerbase + getting more money from bigger amount of microtransactions in theory will allow for much much bigger revenue)

It's probably me, but I just don't see the big deal with an MMO going freemium within 2 years after release. Even more, regardless if it's TSW or another MMO, I think it's sensible of an MMO company if they decide to implement a freemium-friendly structure right from launch, instead of having to make all kinds of rigorous adaptations to change their game to make it ready for the switch. Seeing how the trend is with all these P2P MMO's switching to a freemium model.

Turbine didn't, and they were busy for a year or longer to get LotrO ready, having the next expansion or content update come 1-1.5 year later than was common with the former expansions and major content updates.

Personally, I think all MMO's should have a hybrid model right from start, where you can either opt for F2P with limitations and cash shop or just a monthly flat fee and just be done with stuff. That way you could adjust what and how you pay depending on what your time invested in an MMO will be at any given moment.

If the game is good enough, who cares?  Honestly, I love my lifetime sub to Lotro.  I have yet to pay for expansion or Turbine Points.  I can pop in whenever I want, play however and as long as I want.  It's awesome.

On the other hand, it really does depend on the game, but so does having a sub or playing it F2P.  The proof is in the pudding.  If I had bought a lifetime sub to Champions Online....I'd be pissed at myself.  The game sucks.  STO...same thing.  Wish I had a Lifetime sub to WoW though, and Rift and EQ2 and AoC, considering all the times I pop in and out of those games during the year, those monthly subs and expacks add up.

    I don't see the issue.

The life time sub is in the "Grand Master" pack at $199.99 wich is = to $16.67 / month if it last a year before F2P, and if it last 2 years thats only $8.33 / month that one would have payed.

So please help me, what is the issue?

Freemium or P2P who gives a damn. I will still play no matter what model it follows as long as it is good fun. I make good living so i am not bothered about money at all. Compared  to my other hobbies gaming is like a pocket change. If everything thing else was as cheap as gaming i would save crap laod of money every year.

    I would agree.

I would buy a lifetime sub "now" to LOTRO. Should have done it at the time. It really is the better value. But, it does depend on how the game goes freemium or f2p.

I think I need to state something very important here.

Yes, both Aoc & AO can be played F2P, BUT...then you get a limited game.

Ao & AoC got F2P option (both) after 3 years post release.

Both are still P2P for full access to this day, 11 years and 4 years post release.

So I`m going for Lifetime atm :)

  • XthosXthos Member UncommonPosts: 2,740

Well, put it this way, the lifetime price is 25% more than people are paying for a collectors edition for some games, yeah you still gotta buy it, but if you know this is the game for you, then probably a good deal...  I will not be buying one, but I would sooner buy this, than a $150 collectors box.

That is because it breathed a new life into the game. I see more people now than when it was a sub game. Let me be straight about this though, I am no fan of a cash shop, especially one that limits content, but it seems to be the future of online gaming so I guess we are stuck with it.

That Guild Wars 2 login screen knocked up my wife. Must be the second coming!

The lifetime sub price really isnt that much.  You're looking at basically a year sub, so if you'd play the game a year its worth it.  As people have stated, if the game goes 'freemium' after a year, theres usually still some kind of subscription and lifetimes get everything for free.  Unless you dont see yourself playing it ever again after a few months, I think its a good deal.

I personally got a CO lifetime sub and never regretted it for one minute, even now, after its gone 'freemium'.  I'll definitely be getting the TSW one too.

250,- Euro is a fucking load of money and anyone spending 250,- in a single day going out for drinks has no real live experience yet (teenage dream time) good for them tho...

Also the 250 Euro vs 250 dollar scam is in effect here, and funcom is a fucking Europian based country, they have Less cost the a US based country publishing in Europe.

then theres the 3 chars defaulth , buy more NOW for 9,99.  and reserve a name for 9,99  per char..

FUNCOM SCAMS AGAIN and people are falling for it again!

Based on how much I have enjoyed having a lifetime sub to Lotro, I will have to consider this now.

    Interesting.

Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76)
Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe

I find it extremely hard to believe that you have never been dissappointed in a game, even after having done "research".

    Quite an arrogant statement.

Why is that arrogant?  I would hope everyone researches games before they play them, and have  good understanding of what they are looking for in a game.  That's the difference between a smart peson and someone who constantly throws their money away.

Also, where did he say that he was never disappointed in a game?  All he stated was that doing his due diligence in researching the game would guarantee he didn't completely hate it after a month.

I agree the EU vs US comparison. For US the lifetime is 190~€'s and EU the lifetime is 250€'s. That's a sickening difference and no "tax" or "cost" can explain it.

On the subject for extra character slots and name reservations.. Well do your research before ranting. There's no sensible reason a player would need more than 3 character slots.

    Uhm, okay. I'lle elaborate.

For all the things you can look up on the net, the best way to know for sure if you like the game is to actually play the game. Text, pics and movies will only bring you so far.

That said, I was assuming we were discussing a situation where you would order a lifetime sub for a game that simply doesnt have a trial. Which holds true for like.....99% of the new MMOs. There are so many factors involved, from the figurative levels 1 to a 100, that one is never REALLY sure about what a game feels like, plays like, etc. That is, untill you have actually played it.

Now, in that case, it is arrogant to state that one knows himself so well that he can order a lifetime sub. Why? Because it also implies that people that DO get dissapointed after ordering the lifetime do NOT know themselves very well.

And holy crap, there's a thing called "reading between the lines".

You have 525 skills to unlock at launch. That's a lot of "levelling" ahead and since you can always visit the "new player" areas again there's nothing you can't do with "older" toon. Extra characters don't add any value to TSW unless it's really your thing to play different toon every day :E

Having 1 toon per faction is all you could ever need.
