I dont think you can call it nitpicking when half the things they advertised for Age of Conan didnt exist at launch. Funcom is a well established history of hyping their products, and not delivering.
It's one thing to release broken games, but they release broken games with features that are missing entirely. Blizzard not too long ago removed some things from Diablo 3 - if it was Funcom releasing Diablo 3, they would have advertised the crap out of PvP Arenas and whatnot up until release.
I know this went a bit OT - but to pretend that Funcom hasn't earned their reputation is a bit naive. Any Funcom game in the future is a wait-and-see thing for a lot of people at this point (like me).
I think it can be agreed upon that Funcom HAS NOT hyped their product.. as many of you have pointed out, they have been mum about alot of the details about TSW. Unlike Bioware and Anet who hyp the shet out of their products lol ... GW1 was absolutely boring and uninteresting. I expect GW2 to have a few more bells and whistles, but more or less the same crap with better graphics and a better interface. I am glad GW2 exists, it keeps Battleground grinders and the like in one place ... where as the MMO'ers who like serious challenge (and no I am not talking about the Aion grinding mayhem challange) will enjoy TSW. I will give you credit for the fact that Funcom rushed AoC out WAYYYY too quick.. think AoC was in development for 2 years... TSW is nearing 5 years of development. Not only do I support funcom, but seeing as though I have seen how the game is played (if nothing changes), its quite an amazing game... is it "Blade and Soul" type combat?? no, but then again I get tired of the same dramatic, over developed combat systems (Aion is another just like blade and soul)... Anyways, there is a variety of reasons why I decided to go life-time.. then again I wasnt looking for those of you who didnt because of your one million reasons why you wont .... this thread wasnt created for you... this was created for those who BOUGHT THE LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP ... Sheeeeit lol
Even though most of the lifetime subs have tanked and not being worth of their value. Lotro is still a game that was worth the lifetime subscription. Is TSW worth a lifetime? Time will tell.
I've seen the concepts of TSW, I know what the game is all about. I know what Funcom has done with AoC and what was great about AoC. I know the gameplay itself is nothing revolutionizing. It's another hotkey MMO with a twist. I like the skill/build system, crafting system, theme, missions, story cutscenes, dialoque. That's enough for me to pay for a lifetime sub.
What funcom has is a product with a lot of potential and I want to give my support to them and hope they will make the game what they've promised it to become.
When you spend a lot of time in research you know what you are paying unless they pull Anet and implement a shit for brains CS in the last stretch.
considering they already implemented a CS, i guess you're not so hot on the research.
The CS in TSW was planned from day one and it will be purely cosmetical. Unlike in GW2 where you basically get a pop-up whether you want to continue or not :j
I don't know if you're trolling or not but taht GW2 reference was complete nonsense. When you buy GW2 you get the full game with nothing that needs to be unlocked through a cash shop purchase.
As a matter of fact, now that I think about it, the cash shops in GW2 and TSW are very similar in a sense that they both offer mostly cosmetic options and character slots. The major difference is that GW2 devs didn't have the audacity to charge a monthly fee on top of their cash shop.
Yup I'm trollin. But the basic difference with TSW and GW2 cashshop is that GW2 won't be purely cosmetical.
TSW will get their income from subscriptions, GW2 will only get income from CS. It's obvious which one will be more intruisive.
You'd be a fool to beleive that the CS in TSW will be purely cosmetical, no CS ever is because if Devs can smell profit then they will go for it. There is a bit contraversity behind the GW2 CS but it sticks to their philosophy that they published.
Also how many people would have bought lifetime subs for SWTOR? PRolly a whole crap ton considering the amount of the ridiculously overpriced CE of the game was. Of those that would have been life-time subs, what proportion do you think would have still be playing? Prolly only a fraction, being generous lets say 2/3 stayed Point is one can never know how a game will be purely from a Beta or doing research on the game and just shelling aout a few hundred dollars on a possibility is just foolishness.

You don't want to get into a pissing contest between MMOs as people can and will tear TSW apart once it launches. Sure its's got some nifty features, people said the same damn thing with SWTOR, but under all the flashyness you are stuck with another WoW Clone.

I don't remember who posted in one of these threads but as he basically said.
They are getting their profits from the subscriptions, they have no need to get major profits from the CS. Games like GW2 get all of their profit from CS so their approach is a lot different. If TSW actually had P2P + Must buy CS to stay competitive it would be plain redonkulous and people would leave Funcom before they had the chance to say "Oops!"
When it comes to SWTOR the people who would've bought lifetime subscription were most likely downloading the client again as we speak since 1.2 is the patch that BW wanted to launch the game as. SWTOR has only gotten better since launch and I don't think it's farfetched to say TSW won't perfect at start. It'll take some time :j

Actually, games like GW2 get most of their profits from box sales. The cash shop is suplementary income for them. That is why they are able to maintain GW1 and continue to add content to this day without resorting to milking their players for money at every turn.

Being a fan and supporting them is fine. But you threw up a blanket statement that a lot of people 'nit-pick' Funcom's mistakes. They have COLLOSSAL mistakes.
GW1 was a different type of game altogether, and to claim GW2 is like an improved version of GW1 just shows you haven't done your homework. They are entirely different games - just same backstory. Then to imply people who are excited for GW2 somehow don't like a serious challenge - you are insane. Everyone out of beta has detailed how difficult the explorable mode dungeons are. And if the 3-way WvW ends up anything like DAoC was - then its a gamers dream.
Age of Conan was in development for 4+ years by the way, as they were teasing the game 3.5 years before release.

The box sales might cover a large part of the development costs but it's the stream of revenue that keeps them developing the game until their next expansion is ready. CS is going to play a large part in GW2 and in their funding whether you like it or not :j
I pre ordered today. I have high hopes for this game.
Believe me, i thought hard about "lifetime" but settled for just the basic. My reasoning is to play beta weekends. If it sucks, which i highly doubt, i can cancel my pre order and walk away. If it looks like it has potential, i'll play into the free month after release and then decide on changing my sub to lifetime.
IMO, a liftime sub to a MMO i liked and stuck with would be an incredible deal. When i think of the years i played DAoC, AO, and WoW (all at 15 bucks a month) i would of saved alot! The entertainment value of MMOs even at $15 a month is huge. You can take your wife or GF out to dinner and a movie, and even if its Micky Ds, easily drop 30 or 40 bucks in one night.
That said, its still a crap shoot. You are banking on the continued success of the game. You have to decide. I personally, would not take any Devs past history and assume thats how their future games will be. Its a business, and they learn from their mistakes. They know there is plenty of competition and a quality product is a must to endure. I also thought Funcom's Anarchy Online was one of the most underrated MMOs ever. I loved that game.
Funcom has made an MMO refreshingly different from the mold. I'm wishing them a huge success!
They never even bothered fixing leveling after Tortage. The basically mislead people with Tortage and never fixed it. I can't imagine giving Funcom a subscription, let alone a lifetime membership.
Funny, because I wish I could bypass Tortage altogether now on alts as it's just a bump in the road to the real game. At launch, and on my first character, sure you had a point. But the game has gone so far beyond Tortage and it's launch incarnation that you're argument is moot these days.

I didn't buy it at launch as I was happy with WOW at that time. I read reviews and their official forums daily to see all the drama and how funcom (mis)handled it.
I only started playing it when it went F2P and I can say that the leveling is horrendous after Tortage. Like really, really unpolished and I quit somewhere in the 40's. I haven't had even the slightest desire to go back once since then, sometime last summer. I wasn't really a fan of the combo system or their pricing model. I may have stuck it out if I could permanently unlock content. But there was no way I was going to subscribe to a game that just wasn't close to being polished.
Funcom really showed a complete lack of understanding the market.
I would not buy another lifetime sub for an mmo having done it in the past and being disappointed with it. Also AOC's launch was very bad, although they did redeem themselves in my eyes later by improving the game.
I hope this game turns out well, the genre as a whole needs a home run. I am cynical these days but I wish them well. I'll be watching to see the player reviews more than professional reviews.
I have been a long-time fan of Funcom... unlike many people who nitt-pick the crap out of funcom and their games, it truly is the ONLY company to offer something different and revolutionary to the genre with each game... We need more FUNCOMS ... not more Blizzards and Anets... I dont make tons of money, but I wanted to support funcom for trying a brand new spin on the genre through TSW... such balls (regardless of whether it works or not) deserves to be supported.. especially in a genre full of clones trying to be EQ or WoW... This game is being done unlike any game before its time.. for the amount of time they have been working on it (4 - 5 years anyone?), I believe this game will be good at launch, and spectacular in time. WHO ELSE BOUGHT LifeTime?!
Stopped reading right there.
You just shot ur whole statement in the foot just with this single word. There is NO company out there that questions EVERY SINGLE THING about conventional mmorpg than ArenaNet. All the signs say that GW2 may just live to the hype.
Yes, what Funcom is trying to do is innovate in its own way. Classless system and no leveling. The question is: how will it all feel when playing it? Judging from the 35 min presentation, game looks pretty mediocore. That is including animation, cutscenes, lifeless atmsphere and towns that act as social hubs. THAT, my friend, is NOT nittpicking. Only good thing I noticed is voice acting. I actually really liked it. Besides that, it is meh.
We should have more Anets than FUNCOMS that, btw, have poor customer service (looking at all the player complaints here in this forum), has a cash shop on top of subs and has EA behind it (that should already ring warning bells but players are pinned on the fact that it is set in modern day setting, has a classless system and no leveling.)
Also tell me, how long will TSW last you? Yea there are 3 storylines to experience and some dungeon raids. Maybe you will get an average pvp on top of that though pvp does not seem to be the focus of this game.
I don't know. I have a very strong feeling it is going to be a disappointment. I count TSW as having unreasonable hype and will fail to meet the expectations.
I think Lifetime subs are a total scam, right up there with day one DLC.
It is very difficult to truely get your money's worth from a lifetime sub. Unless you are very much a casual gamer, I doubt anyone will really want to maintain a sub for a year to the game. Considering it's Funcom, we can expect the same rate of content and amount of content at release. For a hardcore gamer, that's about 2 months of actual content, maybe 3 months before you finish the game. Serious content patches get released maybe every 6 months on Funcom's schedule, and unfortunately the longest they last is about a week (so another +1 month every 6 months). Unless you enjoy running a gear treadmill or making a bunch of alts (well, even that's limited too) and going through the same content over and over again it's highly doubtful you'll get much playtime past that as a hardcore gamer. If you are a casual gamer I think money might be better spent elsewhere too.
Worse yet it's Funcom. They are good developers with great ideas, but horrible execution. I always say that Funcom needs better Programmers and System Designers. Their art team and general design teams are very good, but they really aren't good at other things like finding bugs, fixing exploits, customer support, balance, releasing a game with all content promised, etc. If this was a Blizzard game I could maybe understand spending $200 on a lifetime sub, but even then I think I'd personally rather have the flexibility of being able to cancel my subscription whenever I like.
I'm probably going to buy the normal game as I do find games by Funcom to be quite enjoyable for a few months. This was the game I was most excited about, but over the past several months (almost a year now) my hype for the game has dwindled a bit (starting with the announcement that EA was copublishing) and right now I'm looking forward to Guild Wars 2 more so than TSW. It's also signficantly harder to swallow the cash shop + subscription fee pill when you see a game like GW2 not requiring a sub fee.

I subbed to DAoC for 3 years and WoW for almost 4. I wished to hell in retrospect, that i had lifetimes with them.
Lifetime subs are definately not a scam. They are a sound marketing idea to generate more initial money. Its a business and they are in business to make money like any other business. Believe me, they are hoping just as much as the subscriber that a lifetime sub works out well for the customer.
The box sales might cover a large part of the development costs but it's the stream of revenue that keeps them developing the game until their next expansion is ready. CS is going to play a large part in GW2 and in their funding whether you like it or not :j
And you're deluding yourself if you think that Funcom will maintain a completely benign cash shop. Believe it or not, even with a subscription fee, the cash shop is a big part of their revenue and they will attempt to make the most out of it.
Will it be as bad as AoC? Probably not at first but as subscriptions fall, as they usually do after the first month or so, and as the next quarter approaches, they will be looking to milk the cash shop for as much as they can.
You have a number of examples. One is GW1 which had a cash shop for years which remains completely optional without any gamebreaking boosts or nickel and diming. Then you have AoC... Or do you honestly think that Funcom will change this time around?
wouldn't you be showing your support more by not buying the lifetime subscription and instead paying the sub fee for a long period of time? You would give them more money this way to show your support.

There were a lot of people who dropped lifetimes on STO. Now everyone who didn't buy a lifetime, has one. Plus, I don't think I'd ever purchase a lifetime sub in a game wiht a Cash Shop.
But then again, It's really not much different than say Rift and a 12 mo sub.
I think the whole discussion about the lifetime subscription is a bit premature. Funcom has already confirmed that the lifetime offer will be available well beyond the launch of the game, so you don't have to commit to it prior to launch like you did in past mmorpgs. If you are unsure but still interested in the basic game, you can just buy the basic package (which includes 30 days btw) and perhaps pick a lifetime at a later date.
Ugh .. no I would never. Not even on games I really look forward to. Didn't even get the CE in the case of SWTOR despite me looking forward to playing it a lot. Turned out to be a good call as I quit before the first sub term hit.
You never really know how a game will end up untill you you had some solid hands on time. (i.e. made it to endgame and then some).
Why do we even have discuss why lifetime memberships are bad from a player perspective?
1. You are betting on liking a game for over a year just to save a bit of money. If you don't like the game, or if it absolute sucks, you lose big. Even if you end up liking the game, you at least are paying for something you like.
2. You will feel obligated to like this game because you already sunk so much money into it. If the game sucks, you will become miserable trying to force yourself to like the game and become one of those dreaded fanbois.
3. THEY DON'T NEED YOU ANYMORE. Sure, they'd like you around to bolster the numbers, but if they could get rid of you, they would in a second. Everything that they do will be to get new players, which many times will contradict with the long term health of the game.
4. When they introduce a cash shop, they will care about you again. And it will be sooner rather than later, because that's the only way they will get more money out of you.
5. You will start posting "I paid for a lifetime sub, I should get everything for free!"
I don't think I'd life time sub to any MMO. Just cuz it's real easy for a plug to be pulled and that "investment" goes nill.
That's my decision. As a person in the creative industry I'm glad suckers are born every minute.
How many AAA MMO's have been shut down so far? all the MMOS i have payed sub for are still up and running. Sorry but you are grasping at straws here. If i remain so fearful all the time i wouldn't buy and play a single MMO.

Funny, because I wish I could bypass Tortage altogether now on alts as it's just a bump in the road to the real game. At launch, and on my first character, sure you had a point. But the game has gone so far beyond Tortage and it's launch incarnation that you're argument is moot these days.
LOL...
You get what you pay for dude...
Looking forward to EQL and EQN.
$200 for a lifetime subscription....NOT ME!!!!
Lifetime?
Lifetime?
Lifetime....Sub?
Are you serious? I don't even pre-order anymore. My heart and wallet can't take anymore foolishness.
Now, I did sign up for beta...If I were to get invited I'd maybe consider it if I was blown away. But....remember Tortage? and then after Tortage.
So, no. I did not throw ANY money at any sort of "Lifetime" sub, or buy any lottery tickets at the gas station.
Why the hell do you want to buy lifetime subs when you have never even try the game at all?
My questions is why are they selling Lifetime at launch?
Just wait for the player video reviews.
Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language

My brand new bloggity blog.
