Goodbye Massively

Can't post on their new crap without logging in with a real name and facebook.  I refuse to do that for a gaming site and therefore can't even post a goodbye will go somewhere else for that extra news.

I don't mind using my fb account to post, but for the life of me I can't find how to actually do it!

I wonder if my browser is blocking popups. I don't have addblock activated.

And for people who don't have facebook? That is kind of lame....

I dont know this site, but yes, I dont have a facebook account - and I definitely dont want one, ever.

  • DarwaDarwa Member UncommonPosts: 2,181

It doesn't HAVE to be Facebook. You can also use the following: Aol, Google, OpenID, Yahoo, or Twitter.

I don't know where you got the 'real name' crap from, as that's not remotely true. Just set yourself up a fake Twitter account and be done.

Personally, I dislike using a third-party service to log in anywhere, but I dislike false information a lot more.

So you haven't figured out you can create dummy emails, twitter pages and facebook accounts?

    Yes I was being facetious

Facebook is alread de rigeuer, pretty soon I can't see avoiding having an account just to get stuff done. One of these days I guess I'll stop staving it off.

As for real name registrations, I can see the thinking behind it but I can see pitfalls too.

You shouldn't have to though and the majority of people won't. Whoever thought using the one login for different sites that have nothing to do with each other was a good idea needs their heads examined. If say the twitter or FB get compromised then they're all compromised.

It makes no difference to me as i don't sign up to sites that force you to do these things but many people do and it's just silly IMO.

Last fall my NHL hockey team's website got rid of their Official Forums and told everyone to go to their facebook page from now on to talk about the team.

Its not the same.. pretty unfortunate that Facebook is taking over this kind of stuff, I mean... Facebook.... sucks.

  • dontadowdontadow Member UncommonPosts: 1,005

I wish every website would force you to use your facebook or something linked to a real idenity.

One of my local news sites did this a year ago.  The racist comments, trolling threads and general reasons I avoided the article comment sections have disappeared.  When you don't have anything to hide, who cares what it is linked to.

I had one for about 7 months. I hated it. Relatives I didn't like or rarely spoke to begging me to harvest their pumpkins and feed their chickens. People from highschool and even gradeschool that I couldn't remember for the life of me or I had forgotten for a reason. Facebook is a very shallow form of "friendship" and I don't  care what my 68 year old aunt (who I barely speak to because she scares me) had for breakfast or that her bunions hurt. image I  realised the  only people on my friends list I really wanted to talk to were already in my email contacts, phone address book or on various friends lists elsewhere (skype, msn, etc).   I quit and it felt great to quit. Everyone said I'd be back, I haven't and I won't. Not even to follow the best game on earth would I go back image

You are right you shouldn't have to, but being on the fence because you want to protect your personal information is ..I don't know stupid?

Making you jump through all these hoops is equally stupid and It does limit your userbase

Why? Even when I had a facebook account I did NOT use my real name. A form of my real first name yes, not my real last name. I never use my real name unless I feel the site needs to know such as I am buying something online and have to put my real details in. Otherwise forget it. Even hotmail doesn't have my real name in it anywhere image

I have a gaming twitter account with one of my gaming names, just set one up, it's not like you have to send tweets and take an interest.

Thinking of making a new name and fake/real facebook account just for that.

Why does using your real name bother you so much?

You aside, more real world accountability bought in to forums and the like the better imo. Maybe it will help change the douche culture we have seen grow over the past decade and help folks control their more disgusting behaviour.

Kind of surprised about the facebook thing, i mean, i don't have a facebook account myself, i used to but deleted it last year some time, prior to this timeline business, which apparently is causing a fair percentage of people to also ditch facebook. Given that these types of things can be abused so easily, and represent a real threat in terms of identity theft if your daft enough to use real information to create your facebook account, also, i may be paranoid, okay im definitely paranoid, but isnt facebook really just a captive audience for advertisers? image

You guys worrying about internet 'privacy' make me laff...

You have already been bought and sold a million times, long before it became fashionable to have an opinion on it, your 'privacy' is a myth.

Social media is the most vacuous form of human interactaction ever devised.  An outlet for a navel gazing populace to stroke it's collective ego and nurture its misplaced sense of self-importance.  No wonder so many media companies are leeching on to it.  They know their audience.

I know that eventually, I'll be forced to create an account just to get any kind of information online.  But I'm not going to do that until it's absolutely necessary.  I'm in no hurry to have that particular UPC code tattooed on my forehead.

Since my mom joined Facebook I couldn't stay behind and joined as well two months ago. Now my own mother is trolling me AND my friends on a daily basis.

    V_V

So yeah, I'm strongly in favor of having multiple "personalities" online.

You do realise this is a form of social media? One where we stroke our collective egos and nurture our misplaced sense of self importance.

nah, that isn't 'just' all it is.

A lot of people derive a lot of value from FB and enjoy it a lot. They understand that advertising is a valid part of having a free service on the modern internet.

I know it's the 'pro' opinion to not like FB, but I personally enjoy it for what I use it for.

We need to hide things that others can use to hurt us. Extremists, racists, criminals and other bad people can take advantage of your personal information. They will know who you are and can perhaps figure out where you live.

    Think about that.

I dont trust other people. And I dont think people in general are good. Or even that authoritys or the government are always good. Its about security, integrity and freedom.
