I like both WoW and Rift, but I don' t need to sub to both. I go back and forth between them, but I want to settle on one.
If you've played both games in their most recent versions (Cataclysm, Rift 1.7), what do you think?

Yeah, GW 2 is going to strip WoW of it's several million players with MoP launching. [mod edit]]
WoW feels more organic, fleshed out, and just more content.....
Rift your character feels detached from the world and it feels like it is a half ass clone.
They are both very good at what they do. For me I have played way to much of WoW seen it all and pretty much done it all. I have put that game to rest and tried Rift. I think its a fantastic game and its definitly on the upswing. Its really up to you but there are some pretty cool things about Rift that make it a unique experience.
After having played WoW for over six years up to an including cataclysm, and Rift for a few months, I have to say Rift is all around a better.
The base mechanics around the game are done more cleanly than WoW, IMO, and Trion is pumping out quality updates and content at an amazing speed, putting Blizzard to absolute shame in that department.
Haven't played Wow in a few years but when I did it was the community that ruined it for me. Rift has very nice graphics and is generally well done. I enjoyed it while it lasted but found it too easy and lost interest when I hit the level cap. Might resub when they come out with an epansion. As for now I am going back to EQ2 and wait for the new crop of games to come out.
Id say its more of the choice of do you like lots of open group content? If so go with Rift. Tho it doesnt have the same amount of content as wow it has plenty of fun things to do. If you are more into doing your own thing for the majority of your time and group when you fill like it go WoW with its more simplistic ways of finding groups you dont have to worry to much about getting into a guild like you would generally want to do in Rift. Both have Pros and Cons but it all comes down to what you truely enjoy doing.
If you are older and prefer a more mature population you might prefer Rift. WoW has a lot more going on,but to me has been unplayable for years now because it seemed to shift gears to target and accommodate children. Everyone is different, just not my cup of tea. Both have a trial,so nothing lost sampling.
Ballerinas are always on their toes. Why don't they just get taller ballerinas?
Ive been having a problem understanding this? "Target and accommodate to children" I dont see it just cuz it got easier for the more casual players the game is still very adult. A quest in forsaken starting area consists of you sitting on a cannon and blowing worgan to bloody pieces. And as for the "Pandas" they are alcholics i cant see that as kiddy. So this focusing on children is complete BS. They made it easier they didnt turn it into tellatubbies.
The update schedule on Rift is the big factor to me. I played WoW for long enough to know how major this is. Blizzard has gone from putting out the best content to putting out just enough and then making you pay $60 for what shuld be included in a sub fee.
WoW has without a doubt stagnated the genre to the point it has not moved in years. You have Blizzard telling blatant lies to the playerbase and then saying if you do not like it then quit. This worked because there was literally zero competition for years in the NA/EU region.
Now competition shows up and "we will give you content faster", but give them $60 first. Whoever buys into this Mist of Pandaria crap deserves to get ripped off. Nothing is changing fundamentally with the game at all. They are adding some raid, few 5 mans, and a BG.
Also to any GW2 fan trolling this thread tell ArenaNET to release the game already. TOR fans did the exact same thing you guys are doing and look at where they are now. They got their ass's humbled real fast. GW2 fans need to get a reality check on what qualifies as pve end game because that game IS BEYOND WEAK on the pve side.
Literally no organized PVE guilds are looking at GW2 seriously. What pve is zerging down some open world boss that is on a random timer or some 5 mans? What a joke. I have zero faith in a dev who could not put Jumping into a CORPG. Guild Wars proves how stupid the Buy to play model is because the developer is not held accountable at all for their actions or required to show results.
Seems I hit a tender spot. Sorry, didn't mean to offend. As I said, that was just me, and everyone needs to see for themselves. I played WoW for years and enjoyed it. I left shortly after the creating CEO (A true Gamer and a genius) was replaced ,EA got involved, and they started selling shiny ponies.
Ballerinas are always on their toes. Why don't they just get taller ballerinas?
Came back to Rift about a month ago and have been very happy. There are definitely a lot of fun things to do whether you have a large group of friends to play with or simply run solo.
I play with a RL buddy a lot and we love the Chronicles and Instant Adventures. With our limited gaming time (both married with kids) those features allow us to progress at 50 without having to deal with long dungeon runs or raids.
If you enjoy raiding and have the time to invest in that type of progression, Rift has a lot of to offer in that regard as well.
I still play WoW sometimes but I find that Rift is more enjoyable these days.
You make good points but not a single version of wow by itself was 60 bucks the game started at 50 and now you can get the whole game for 80 bucks. MOP will prob run with the trend and be 40 bucks and force cata to drop a few months after and Wrath then becomes part of the Battle Chest as well. But im happy to see someone else is looking at GW2 as another game not the change all to the genra.
Last time ill call out something on ya promise. I knew what you were saying but EA doesnt have anything to do with WoW of any Blizz merch thats all blizz and activision with an equal partnership thats why they are now called Blizzard/Activision. But i knew what you were talking about. 8)
I am also not retarded here. It does not take a genius to realize that WvWvW is THE PERFECTTTTTT solution to RvR in a themepark model of gameplay. GW2 fans act like they have something special here. You seriously expect that Tion will not flat out jack these features within a few months of GW2 release?
I mean holy crap TOR released in December and they jacked the Mercenary idea for battlegrounds in February.
Rift pumps out content really fast but its not very good content. They throw these updates out as fast as possible with little thought and keep destroying what little class balance there is.
When your major feature for an update is weddings then you know they are just putting out updates to put out updates.
If you do choose Rift I hope you play a Warrior. If not then Rift can be a sad lonely experience.
no raids does not equal no pve. raids is shit pve in my eyes. its about time a game dropped the whole concept
i'm mainly a pve player and its precisely for the pve that i'm looking forward to GW2 and you're just showing you have no clue on the mechanics with your timer comment. if you dont know about something then dont talk about it.
thats why we have millions of false rumours flying about.
but back to topic, this thread isnt about GW2 .
OP take a break from both games, and see which one it is you feel most like playing after a few weeks
Currently playing- SWG PreCU & GW 2
Have tried WoW, AoC, & Vanguard, SWG:NGE, GW, LOTRO & SWTOR
Best MMO: SWG
Worst MMO: SWTOR
Nonsense,
GW2 is the MMO for people who don't really like playing MMORPGs ©
I've found over the years most WOW players are pretty happy with MMORPG's as they are currently being delivered,so while the numbers will dip for sure, they'll have people returning even when the Panda's invade.
As to the OP, couldn't vote, I played both Cata and Rift at lauch so my experience with them as they are today is very limited, can't recommend one over the other.
But I agree, can't play and pay for subs to 2 different MMO's, barely enough time for one in my life.

i love MMO's and i will be playing GW2, so if your first line isnt sarcasm it definitely isnt fact.
but the nonsense about GW2 making a dent in WOW subs is just that. nonsense.

Better then Blizzard constantly saying crap is broken. I think msot Rift players need to go take a trip back to Azeroth for a few months to get a feel for how screwed you are as a player.
Class is broken..screw you pay us $60 for a expansion and maybe we will fix it
Want new professions? ..screw you pay us $60 for a expansion and maybe we give you them
Want new landmass or content? ..screw you pay us $60 for a expansion and maybe we give you them
want dev interaction?..Screw you we are Blizzard and do not need to do that we know better then you. go qq on the forums
want CS tickets answered? ..screw you we are Blizzard and will answer it when we are ready...go qq on the forums
cash shops or paid transfers? ..screw you we need the money because the content cost so much and things are just not technologically possible
Server balanced completely fudged? ..screw you..don't like it go transfer
want a alive world? screw you we are Blizzard and have a better vision of the game then you ever could
low pop server? ..screw you we have 10million players and everyone is happy..don't like it give us $25 and go transfer
How anyone supports Blizzard after getting screwed for so many years is beyond me? PEOPLE RIGHT THIS MINUTE are playing Mist of Pandaria Beta like it is a live content. Dragon Soul was back in December? and Mist is maybeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee at earliest in August.
SERIOUSLY you want to debate about fast contents for the sake of fast content? WoW players would have heart attacks if Blizzard ever put out content as fast as Trion. You got this huge world and everyone is afk'n in Stormwind of Orgrimar. Yeah great mmorpg you have there
Both do dungeons very well (although Aoc probably has the best dungeons)
Rift does the leveling better with the invasions and stuff
Rift has more open world stuff at endgame
Wow has better pvp (although both have poor pvp really, if pvp is your thing wait on gw2)
Both feel more open world than say swtor, wow gas the bigger world
Wow has better class mechanics / leveling e.g. hunter pet training, class specific quests
But then rift has more flexibility in roles / builds
Rift feels a bit more grown up, a bit grittier
Wow has better animations, but rift has better graphics overall
If your looking for a solid pve themepark and don't expect decent pvp or sandbox elements or whatever, rift is very good at catering to its core audience. It's not the game for me as I like pvp and crafting, but u respect it at what it does.
If I had played WOW as long as I've played RIFT, I'd easily vote for WOW. But with so many years played in WOW, RIFT is more appealing.

Well from a new player to wow and to rift after playing everquest 2 for five years these are my opinions so far.
Tried wow until i got to lvl 74 , not end game but i think i played long enough to know whats going on .
Its not a bad game , runs smooth , graphics arent bad in high def with ultra settings. Enviroments were great and changed alot.
Questing was your average mmo questing.
I enjoyed the dungeon finder to find groups
The looking for guild feature
the smooth animations and music.
Dungeon finder was ok for the most part but i ended up skipping alot of content using it and had to go back on my toon so i could experience it doing greyed out qsts.
Ui is ok only after using some addons for me anyway. The game felt simple to me i was a pally tank (prot) and basically had a 3 button rotation for aoe mobs and singel target , plus the few here and there you throw in before a fight or in between skills.
Honestly i got kinda bored with it . (The tanking part) pull mash pull mash pull mash...
Alot of quests, factions, gear, and achievements to do so plenty to keep you busy though if thats your thing.
Wish character custimization was a bit better and didnt care for the transmog deal instead of just having appearance slots .
It limited your choice to be different. Was kind of a pain, if you like a hammer because you had to have a hammer for it to work ect ect.
If there gonna give us appearance options well open them up let us have em . everquest 2 does it , lotro, and rift.
Theres alot more to the game but i want to get to rift.
Overall wow has alot of things to do to keep you busy , while the questing part felt like a singel player game to me the dungeon maker si there to help you get away from it once in awhile .
Not a bad game and would play it if i wasnt playing rift now.
Rift i am only at lvl 15 wich i feel is ok to comment on minus end game , at least im able to use random dungoen finder ect.
The games are alike in a way but here ill just comment on the things i like so far that are different.
Character custimization is much better in my opinion minus the fact there are fewer races, They do need more starting areas as well , This is sort of overcome though do to the ability to change your role on the fly .Wich allows you to play a different role without starting over (plus with the mentoring system coming no need ).
Soul trees much like talent trees for wow are just overwhelmingly awesome , i love the fact i can make the toon i want to play without having to make 4 toons. Right now im a cleric healer using Warden heal over time heals , but i added in cabalist so i can drain there health as well . Trying it out and if i dont like that ill go back to pure healer with purifier just so many options.
Random rifts are a joy for me so far i hear alot of others saying they get old . ok with me i just go around them if i dont feel like getting involved.
Collections are fun and give nice rewards, the dungeon was much more involved to me and harder then the ones i tanked in wow , actually had strategy involved , the ones in wow i did from 15-74 were all turn and burn .Im sure end game is different but i cant comment on wows end game so no comment.
The graphics were also nice , more realistic to me and the spells had alot more effects than wows.
Didnt care for the horse in rift seems slow even know your going 60 percent faster .
I like how you can only greed on items your class cant use in rift .
Love how the storyline qsts are in gold so you know wich ones you should really pay attention to , helps with learning the lore.
Like how rift is newer and i can take my time and learn everything about the game and be there for the new content as its released.
Rift will be implamenting mentoring soon and this is a game keeper for me they had it in eq2 and this gives you even more things to do at end game .
You can re run older dungeons without everything being grey and still get rewarded for it , help out fellow guildies . ect.
Theres more i could talk about but the lists go on and on and for now im sticking with rift , i just prefer the soul trees, random events, collections, and all the grouping aspects of the game .
Then again the end game might suck i dont know , so just like wow no comment.
Wow felt , to me like guild wars in a way Stormhold was the hub and i could go quest on my own or find a group it was just to much of the same over and over and over. Same as rift but At least in rift events happened randomly and things changed on there own .Giving you a choice , quest hubs being taken over by mobs, ect.
Survival skill coming where i can setup a tent and a fire , mentoring, at this rate rift even without massive amounts of content will leave you with things to keep you busy ,Sometimes features can make a game better than content. Thats the way i see it anyhow. Or i hope..
But wow does have its qualities as well .Depends on what you want . More content or more dynamic. There both goos games i am just prefering rift right now .We shall see.
This sir is a choice you will have to make .
RIFT from last night ..
WOW from this morning..
You are going to be surprised by the number of people who want to raid, who want to do progression PVP, who want to theory craft, who want to keep working towards something that will make their characters better. GW2 will introduce changes for sure. But I think it's a serious question to ask if GW2 has the staying power to hold attention month after month as the average player's 1st choice. There are many people who will got to GW2, play it through and then fall back to their other MMOs.
(On Topic)
I have played both Rift and WoW. During WLK, I spent a huge amount of effort preparing for Cata. Collected all the BoA gear I could and started filling in the gaps with assortments of BoE blues all enchanted and ready to go. I was going to level a Worg. I got my Worg into the mid 80s and walked away. Never even capped I was so disghusted with WoW.
I am currently subbed to Rift. I enjoy the game when I play, but it's so casual now, a few hrs a week maybe. But it's still fun. Better for me than WoW anyway.
Edit: In spite of that. I plan to buy MoP just to check it out. I will suspend my Rift account, play WoW and decide from there if Blizzard really wants to make a decent MMO or not.
None of the WoW expansions are $60. Not even the original game was $60.
So, please stop lying and spreading misinformation.
