Safe Bet?

I might be late on the train but i don't follow games that closely, but i recently saw some trailers for this game and it looks amazing and right up my alley.  But there's been a lot of hate surrounding the company that's backing this game up (Funcom) and I'm wondering what they did wrong in the past with their games.  I really want to pre-order this game it looks right up my alley but should i just wait and see what happens after launch?

Apply for the beta. I have no doubt they will have a public open beta if you don't get into closed beta. Plenty of time to see if the game is something you like, and runs good on your computer. All of the packages/offers they have now will be there after launch.

And you can bet there will be bugs galore, lag and other such stuff that crops up at launch. I have yet to experience an mmo launch that didn't have some kind of hiccup.

On second thought looking at more videos the physical animations look horrendous, so cheesy in fact if they don't fix that i can't play this game.

EA are pushing this through before Funcom have it anywhere near ready, you can quote me on that after launch.

No and its not EA fault, Funcom are just terrible at making games.

Since EA is only distributors, they have no leverage on Funcom. If this game is rushed, it's only Funcom's fault.

Op, either go for the beta or better yet wait until a couple months after release for a free trial. Funcom has shown that they release games far before they are worth playing.

To the OP, I wont go into huge details but many feel that Funcom dropped the ball on some of their games. For instance, Anarchy Online has the most god awefull launch ever..(to be fair, this was years, years ago).. And the other is Age Of Conan. With AOC I think many thought it didnt have features they promised. Most now a days base what is a good mmo by the same factors, one huge one is PVP.. Age Of Conan from my understanding was simply lacking any good pvp. On the same note though, Age of conan was a step in the right direction for us adults who enjoy MMO'ing. Had sexual themes, nudity , cussing galore, blood, violence (Heavy Violence).. pretty much , it wasnt WoW. 

I played both games and here is my opinion.. I loved playing Anarchy Online when it came out, even with all the bugs and down time and waiting to get on and crashing when I got on, it was "right up my alley" at the time. I wanted that sort of game in my free time and I had so much fun in it. If you looked past the bugs / gliches / graphics.. it was fun.  Age of Conan was fun to me, but it had nothing at the end of getting to your highest level, like literally nothing worth a flip to get done. Attractive game, sweet combo moves and just a fun experience until you , did it all. The big thing that keeps me away now from it was the community.. it could have just been my server but, there were far too many d!cks than good fun people. 

To sum up, try to get in beta and remember.. though people are like "its beta, it will change", by the time you are in beta, the game your playing is the game thats coming out.  Those in beta dont always sum up who will be playing it either, so if there are alot of jerks (which there will be), dont let them detour you from what might be a fun game. Funcom CAN make a solid fun experience, just stick with them.

If you want a safe bet, play an established MMO that has been out for 3+ years.  There are quie a few out there - EQ2, LoTRO, WoW, AoC, EVE, etc.

 

ANY new MMO is not a safe bet.  Games from companies with good reputations (i.e. BioWare) can put out crap, companies with bad Reputations (i.e Turbine after DDO) can put out great games and companies with no reputations (TRION) can put out 100% polished AAA MMOs.  

 

There are no safe bets.  Buy it, play it, you don't need to pay the monthly fee until after the first month is done.  I've played some really crappy MMOs over the years, but I'm yet to buy one that wasn't AT LEAST worth the initial $50 (even if i ended up dumping it later).  If you like MMORPGs, pretty much any game is still better value for a month than buying a single-player game, so stress less about it.
