Sadly though since Wow does exist, all those poor nerdy college students who should have gone on to stamp out disease, world hunger, invent clean energy, or end interglobal strife with diplomacy, all became hardcore raiders and flunked out of school.

Hey. it COULD be true. Guess we'll never know.image

That's not reflective of market trends.  There is no shooter bohemoth.  Modern Warfare 3 might be the biggest... but not by much.  Halo and Battlefield are both close competitors.  On top of that there are free shooters that also compete.

World of Warcraft is unique and has achieved a large market share that no one genre or industry has.

I think the gaming community would have been alot more courteous than it is now.

WOW seems to have bred a bunch of rude little bastages. Little or no tolerance for other's or anyone else's opinion.

This couldn't be further from the truth. It may seem that way to ya if you're new to the genre but it was far far far worse before WoW was around.

The cesspool community was far more dense back in the day. MMORPGs pre WoW were rarely newb friendly, even less noob friendly. WoW has been one of the most friendly online games i've ever played, considering the amount of players.. its impressive.

^^^ There would be more communities like Eve...and the amount of grown men /wrist would be pandemic because of Goon's MMOwide dominance.

Well, Blizzard just took the MMO concept and put it into a game "for everyone". This might've pissed loads of "veteran" MMO players who just didnt feel "special" anymore - the common complaints are "it's too easy", "the community is bad", "all the kids are playing it", "aimed too much for the casual player" etc. I'm ready to discuss any of those, with arguments.

I fully understand those that dislike the game for a specific reason, like they cannot stand the graphics or the fantasy setting or the way the instances, raids etc. are designed, but overall, as a game, you can't go wrong with WoW in terms of content, fluid gameplay, featuers. There's loads of content for everyone, probably it has the most content of any MMO on the market.

All in all, i think WoW opened the market for many companies, making them see the huge potential of online gaming. There are now projects with hundreds of millions in investments and such, lots and lots of companies interested, which creates competition, which is very very good for us, the players, and even if we like to admit it or not, we partially have to thank Blizzard for that.

And finally, the big "decrease in quality" and "copy of WoW" argument. Yes i agree, lots of the "new games" are just copies of WoW (not one coming even close to the quality of the original product) and that's bad because loads of people are bored with the WoW model and they want someting new, someting inciting, special, different. Well, if people would stop this blind rampage of pre-purchasing and actually wait for the release and trial, maybe they'll have a saying in the market.

To have millions of people paying in advance for a product which it is not even released is every company's wet dream - waiting for GW2 guys to announce the prepurchase numbers, i bet they would be big, and that game doesnt even have a release date!!  Even the latest Bioware junk released proved that there's a very short road going from "but i am following the game, i know exactly how great it is, i am / was in the beta" to "the mechanics are broken, it's a WoW copy, there's no max level content, pvp is not balanced"

What we see on the gaming market right now is a flood of essentially crap games that focus on making as much profit as possible.

For example, Bioware/EA and Dragon Age: Origins. You could play the original game, but it was crippled with important content missing. You already needed a DLC, that was only downloadable if you made an account on their site. Then they added other DLCs which are all very expensive for very little return.

In short, the biggest pile of bull ever. You where pumped for money, and you where getting facebooked on top of it, and lets not get started on how many threads in forums I saw where people had trouble downloading or activating their DLCs anyway. I instantly decided I would not tolerate a singleplayer game (with no multiplayer at all !) would link me to the internet, so I skipped that.

And this is one of the more harmless examples.

    - DA2 had no subtitle (like Origins for DA1) and was in short extreme crap, quality wise.

    - Bethesda's Skyrim is only available through Steamworks. Since I dont tolerate Steam, I didnt bothered buying it. Without Steam, I would have bought it for sure.

    - WoW is the same, by the way. They have what ? Cost for the original game, cost for the expansions, monthly cost, AND on top of that you also have an item shop !

Why is that so ? Because players tolerate everything. And because gaming companies are now ruled by a special kind of person. These people arent interested in creating great products. They dont play games. They only know one variable: profit. And thats all.

I personally expect Mists of Pandaria to be better than this Cataclysm 'cause Deathwing in cataclysm was world destroyer and whatever shit then Deathwing died? in the first day it was released on patch 4.3... IT SUCKS...
