I think bishbosh doesn't like themepark in general which is why he won't listen to some one who does. If memory serves me correct (whichi s less than 50% of the time) He doesn't think fond of Tera either so that makes more sense.

Still I honestly never had problem with themepark but than again I grew up with the mentaility to work for stuff and learn to have sense of achievement for getting some where so might be why i enjoy it. Could be an asian thing because our parents always tell us work hard through hard time so you have better future which could explain why asian like grind games more. Because to us while grind is work but the result of been some where (aka high lvl) that other's can't reach does give a sense of proud and accomplisment. Where NA and EU its more like we want it and we want it now.

I know MMOs tend to get lumped as either sandbox or themepark but in my opinion there is varying degrees of themepark.

There are some themeparks that are literally "on rails' where you must go from one area to the next if you want to progress/survive. The quests, monsters and environment all follow a path for the entirety of the game. Unfortunately, this is TERA for the first 20 or so levels.

Other themeparks allow some wiggle room to explore. There are multiple places you can choose to be for your level and can make you feel like you're playing your own game. This is TERA after 20 or so depending on when you leave the specific area.

Most themeparks fall into the first category and are really boring IMO. This is made worse if xp from kills are low so you are forced to do hundreds of menial quests.

I'll be honest, if it wasn't for the open and group heavy content after about 20 I'm not sure I would've jumped on board. IMO TERA has a superior combination of graphics, animation and combat but the gameplay options are what set it apart.

Just not worth my time anymore.

TERA's questing is standard themepark fare, no doubt.  Linear as all get-out, guiding you by the hand from one quest hub to the next through the zone.  And to top it off, the non-story quests are exceedingly dull.  So it's your standard themepark game, right?

Well...no, not really.  The one thing they absolutely nailed when making this game is that they were able to divorce the game world from its themepark foundation by making it massive, open, and explorable.  So even though the questlines are linear, the world most certainly is not.  This is a very good game design, and one I would love to see more developers do.  It's fine to utilize the central storyline quests as "breadcrumb" quessts that take you through a zone in order, as long as there is room to allow the players to go off the beaten path as they desire.

Now, add that to the fact that, as Deron stated above, killing mobs in the world, particularly BAMS, nets you nice XP, you do get the choice of continuing your leveling ascent without having to grind out every single quest.  The combat in this game is engaging enough and the world environment interesting enough where just going out and exploring, killing interesting-looking mobs for xp is a nice change of pace from the quest grind, and doesn't feel very tedious.

totally agree with you, once again.

one of the things i love about Tera is the sense of exploration.   the huge, open, and gorgeous world.   i went to some tropical island, surrounded by sandy beaches,  and jungles,  i spent exploring there a whole day.   found some neat tree houses, you were able to climb.  i was in awe.

    Pretty much this.

Looking at my questlog one will not only see that I haven't followed the story quests in a linear fashion as I typically skip large sections of them, but I also have quests that I never do. I grab a few, go to do them and just end up exploring, fighting along the way. On a pvp server the added ffa pvp will also create game play.

The problem is some people can't make that leap that they can ignore the quests or just take what they want and leave the rest. Or some people feel compelled to complete everytthing when it's not really needed.

Haha I have to admit that I am one of those players,  I just hate having unfinished quest in my log :p  People keep telling me to just do story quest, bams, and instances in order to level faster.  But.........I just cannot break the habit.

The only time I've gone back to finish quests was in the popori area as I really liked it.

I've spent more time deleting old quests than doing them.

I love how large the world is. I keep discovering new areas that I just love. We had an impromput guild BAM party in some desert area which was a blast, especially trying not to aggro other BAM's.

Next time you need to surprise your party AND aggro that other BAM,  fighting two bams with a group of 5 is amazingly fun (vent can be quite humorous to boot).

Not even close to how it be if your entire guild is out for war =P I seriously loved Tera for the massive GvG or battles, never had other game that does it so well. Chasing down or stalking guilds. Retreating and regroup for second attacks. All stuff lot of current mmorpgs i feel are missing.

LOL nice "ah! oh guys I just aggro'd another, peel him off, peel him off!". Call me nuts but I love walking the line where if you win it will be just barley.

As far as "red only", or not like Sovrath hehe, questing it really comes down to what your play style is and what you prefer. I'm just glad TERA offers you a choice.

For me ignoring yellow quests was like cutting the straps off a heavy backpack filled with mediocre gear.

Just not worth my time anymore.

Poporia really is a great zone and yea gotta delete them repeatables and crappy quests.

Depending on which BAMs you are doing, a lancer can tank multiple at a time. AoE gogo!

Not a bad game.  As a big fan of bioware and swtor I had reservations about this game and when I played beta for the first time I was shocked at how bad the quests were and it kind of soured me for the rest of the game ,When I got an invite for a nother beta I said Ok what the heck, The 2nd beta  played I tried to be open minded and the game felt better to me, I am still a quest driven player and that wont change but I did like the combat , the drops were interesting and if this game were a free 2 play it would be on my computer when it comes out....   I can see people who like to explore really liking this game, I am not much of an explorer I find it tedious with the exception of Vanguard's world

When I saw initial video of this game I was thrilled, the bosses were big, combat appeared interesting, and visually the game is stunning, though the art direction is not to my particular taste. And I am a fan of any solid game that comes out and provides something different from the status quo. I may not play it right away, but my feeling is the more competition the better, because it makes any game that I am playing have to try harder.

So good luck to Tera, I'll be watching reviews to see if it's different enough to give it a go.

@Op- good review . I'm a TOR fan myself but I'll keep this game in mind if I ever want to take a break from it.
