it is considered trolling/bad to post a comment like "this game sucks" without providing any reasons why you feel this way. I think this is a reasonable rule as this is a discussion forum and simple posting opinion without reason doesnt really allow for discussion.
why doesnt this rule apply to people who post "this game is awesome", "best gaem eva!111", "this game is great" without posting reasons as to why?

show me a post where someone said "best game ever" and didn't give at least 1 reason why.

Good word of mouth = better cash flow from vendors seeking to advertise.
Bad word of mouth = worse cash flow from vendors fleeing the hostile environment.
It's lame but it's business.

I dont see how that would arbitrarily make news worthless? Or even a preview.... Now for the review section, I dare not defend any reviews. All reviews on all sites are worthless.. Customer reviews are the only thing you can even slightly trust and only then if there are a large number of them for you to a get a feel for exactly what is a pro or con of a given game.
Maybe because negative posts lead to flame wars, and positive ones only lead to flame wars if the other person has no self control. Who gets mad about someone saying a game is good? People with no self control.
Or you know, an agenda.
i was talking more about what the staff write in the previews and news. they never mention anything bad about the game only positives, or they twist mediocre features to make them seem awesome.
If it's not your own thoughts on a given thing, anything you read from anyone other than yourself is going to be biased. It's just a matter of sifting through what is important to you and what is drivel frivilous hype.
Worthless? No. News is news, you can't put a positive spin on bad news, unless you just don't report it. A preview is what it is. As far as reviews, they are pretty worthless at 95% of magazines and websites. It's always been that way with games, as far as I can remember. Gaming websites/magazines make their money through advertising, it's pretty easy to imagine why they aren't going to bad mouth a game/developer/publisher that is either giving them money to advertise or may give them money in the future. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.
There are plenty of places to get objective reviews around the web. Lots of gaming communities around that will give you the down low. However in the end a review is nothing more than an opinion. Your mileage may vary.

The advertisers who pay for this site want to see "awesome", not "sucks",
you just answered your own question.
it's the reasons why.
most people say "this sucks." and leave it at that. they never talk about mechanics or provide room for discussion.
usually, when people are saying a game looks good, they're talking about aspects they like. there's usually a "because" in there somewhere. don't see many threads start with "x is awesome!" end.
but they seem to start a lot based on "x is bad!" end.
ive seen plenty of people posting "this game is great" or similar without reasoning. it ussually comes as replies to a thread rather than the actual thread so maybe it doesnt attract as much attention.
just look at any of the game specific forums prior to release.
Which (if either) is appropriate depends on the game. For example, "this game is awesome" is wholly inappropriate on the Evony forums.

well if you havent realised the reason why have been/are stuck with such crappy mmorpgs for the past couple of years or so is because people keep overhyping things encouraging devs to continue releasing similar flaming pieces of turds because they no they will get make profit due to hype.
negative posts only tighten up devs and remind them to keep improving their game. postiive posts do the opposite. saying a crap game is good and spreading this is damaging to the industry. this is how we got a decade of wow clones.
No 2nd best game ever, we all know GW3 is the best ever.
you reckon gw2 fanbois and gw3 fanbois would have a flame war if somehow through time travel they were made to coexist for a brief period?
