How to beta test.

JrogalskJrogalsk Member Posts: 34

Hi guys,

I pre-purchased the digital deluxe edition yesterday morning, but my question is: what are we supposed to do/look for during beta weekends.

I have only been a part of 2 other beta test, swotor and APB. In those tests, I was selfishly using my time to see whether or not I was going to spend my money on the game after it released.

Since I pre-purchased the game already, that will not be the case this time around, I want to use the beta time to help make this game as finished as it can be.

So basically, what should I be doing in the game during the beta weekends?

Just give some feedback on the beta forums... this isn't going to be a real beta, where people report bugs or anything.

Watch for and report bugs.  This can be something as simple as a spelling error to as gamebreaking as a mob whose life bar won't go down.  Go explore areas and try to break the game.  It's the little crazy things like that that won't have been fixed by now.

Try to find out as many bugs as you can so you could abuse them to gain advantage when the game is launched before they fix them.

Explore everything and watch for bugs! Then Report the bugs!

Play the game, but every time you see something that is "wrong" you should report it. Anything that doesnt work as it should do, or glitches should be reported. For instance, in SWTOR i kept seeing NPCs that I killed that didnt fall over dead, just stayed standing up. That kinda thing.

And fill in all the surveys you get presented with

I would be trying to jump where it doesn't lead anywhere and see if i get stuck, talk to NPC and check if their dialogue are insync with the animations.

Check all skills and see if they work the way they should, experiment with builds to see if you can OP it to the extreme.

Experiment with craftings to see if they work the way they should, easy to understand, and see if there are bugs that affects your game play with invisible walls, unfinished environments. Animation delays and skills not activating correctly.

And see if when you dodge, the mob still hits you, and see if camera zooms when it shouldnt.

Dynamic events not happening like it should, server lags, sound bugs...etc

    lots to figure out

Just bug everything that seems out the ordinary or seems to need improvements.  Easiest way really.  It usually takes a minute out of your time to write a description and their ingame bug form comes with the ability to take a snapshot of what you are looking at and the area you are in.  So with a  quick click, you can give visual and textual feedback.

Anet makes it real easy to report bugs with a bug report in the upper left hand corner and what appeared to be at times an army of anet folks scattered about out in the fields actually playing and getting owned by players and mobs alike in the game..

    It was a blast...;)

    Playing GW2..

People need to stop thinking that you really need to test and force to find

every possible bug. Playing "selfishly" also helps the developers, most beta

programms have debug software running in the background which tracks certain things

    and reports technical errors.

Actually once they make it part of a promotion and advertisement I start playing the beta "selfishly" and do not go out of the way to find bugs and in today envoirment going out of your way to test a bug gets you branded an exploiter and banned. Reporting bugs is something I do regardless whatever it is a beta or retail given if they make it easy to do so.

when u find a bug there is an ingame Screenshot feature to send bugs directly, just use that

ANet is probably more interested in network stability and usage rates, customer usage information and statistics than actual bugs.

Goooood mornin', soldier. Your role, as the front line of defense between us and a broken launch, is to reasonably and with utmost integrity locate and verify the presence of hostile components such as bugs, errors and incomprehensible material within the game simulation.

These errors will be corrected by higher-level authorities, therefore fixing another part of the operation. Be proud, soldier, you're safeguardin' us from the terrors of broken gameplay, grammar fails and miscoding. Do you're job right, and the game gets done properly, no FUBAR whatsoever.

Do this right, and we can all go home soldier...no casualties at all.

I'm really sick of the whole "There's a massive fanbase for X", or "Y would be a WoW-killer if it just had a chance".

There is no massive conspiracy waiting in the MMO playerbase.

There are no "sleeper-agent fans" waiting to convert once the X or Y is unleashed on the world.

In a three day time span in any beta Ive been in, I can usually report around 10 to 15 bugs easily.   Get stuck on an environmental object?  Describe your location, what you were doing, which direction you were faceing when it happened (N,S,E,W) .  Screen shot of the local will help.   See a mob stuck in the ground.  Report it.  Again, its location, name, level.  Screenshot will help.   If the game crashes or you suffer some sort of graphical or sound issue, state your level, where you were when it happened and what you were doing at the time.

Those are examples on what to do in beta.  Be as descriptive and provide as much info as you can.  Even if the info seems irrelevant, it may be the key to the problem.

Main reason I like Anet's bug form.  A click of a button you have the screenshot attached and ready to roll.  They made the process extremly streamlined.

Log in, play the game as if to win ignoring anything strange, whine endlessly about how your character is going to be wiped and it's sooo unfair, log off. repeat.

I used to test games professionally...and you know, if I'm not getting paid to beta test, then my committment is not that strong lol.

I'll play the game if I feel like it, and if their bug submission interface is easy to use, then I'll use it once or twice (if I feel like it).  But the reality is, this is something that people get paid for, and if I'm not getting paid...it's not a job.  I have no committment to do "work."

Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?

I encourage explorers to find spots where a character might get stuck, specially in jumping puzzles.

This is a very important thing for a beta tester to do.  One other thing to remember, at the conclusion of every dynamic event as well as periodically through out the testing phase you will receive a survey.  Be sure to fill these out and be honest about your feelings even be as blunt as you can, those surveys help the development team in iterating and making them as great and rewarding as possible.
