50$ is not free, so it is not free to play image

I payed 55 euros for the EU version digital download  thats over $70..

Anyway, this game is not free.  there will regular expansions that will cost just as much as the orriginal game. And because they need to make money, they will prolly have another expansion every year, and some DLC story mode adventures every 2 months or so. And then there is the cash shop.

Arenanet never ever stated the game would be free....

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

well good thing for you that GW2 isn't a free2play mmo

Well, Buttpuddle, even if GW2 was F2P, I find little difference between F2P and other games that have a subscription model. More speciically, Buttpuddle, Rift and WoW are 2 good examples of games that have a subscription that suffer from some of the symtoms you describe.

You see Buttpuddle, sometimes content gets old even with the most expensive subscription imaginable. And believe it or not Buttpuddle, the unemployed that have enough money to afford an internet connection can often afford to pay a sub to a game they like.

So really Buttpuddle, I feel like your claims are unfounded and based only on you short sighted point of view. But I do understand wanting a great community to play with on a server, Buttpuddle, I really do.

There's a difference between the developers of Salem and the developers of GW2. Read thhhhiiisssss vvveeeerrrryyyy sloooowwwly soooo youuu ddddoooonnnnttt rrreeeeppppllllyyy: Salem devs have never published a game with millions of users and don't have a multimillion dollar advertising budget. They are 3 college dropouts with a good idea but without the resources to make this game appeal to consumers who can be convinced by a flashy promo trailer that a game is the only game they'll ever need to try. ANet has the resources to advertise the game to enough people to make subscriptions profitable but instead they are choosing a box sale (zing I had to include that for some of the other posters) and micro transactions. This post is meant to be a discussion of why I'd prefer everyone contributing to improving the game instead of relying on short staffing devs or paying to level.

There's a significant point you've missed. ANet has chosen to forego subscriptions because they're willing to admit that subscriptions are basically a scam. Rather than set people on a "carrot-on-a-stick" treadmil that breeds addiction for the next tier of more uber gear, they've created a game where the entire game remains playable when you've hit max level. They want you to spend money because you choose to, not because you feel you have to in order to keep up with the next guy. Remember there's no gear treadmill in GW2. It's that treadmill that keep people paying monthly for subs, fattening the profit margin, instead of simply playing for fun and paying for extras as they see fit. There's a cash shop in GW2, but there's nothing in the shop you'll be required to buy to compete with the next guy. There will be expansions and added content, but nothing that will prevent you from playing if you don't get it.

Welcome to the anti-WoW. Here be dragons.

If Im paying a monthly fee its because I want to. Im not forced to do it. If I feel there is nothing interesting to do in a P2P game I can unsub. And subrcribe later if the game gets better or there is a new content patch. It means I have complete control. I know exactly how much it will cost and I only pay when I want to play.

If anything F2P games with advantage cash shops are a scam. People are led to believe its free but are actually paying. And often way more than $15/month. Actually they want people to spend money because they feel they have to. Like if your friend is levelling faster than you and you buy xp-potions to catch up. Or if you are crafting and buy boost so you can craft the best items sooner. Perhaps in that case because your friends can make better items. XP-potions and crafting boosts are advantage items that can help you compete with the next guy. Like all other "time saving items" or boosts.

you mke it sound like you have to buy those things.... because i know i never will.  and guess what. i will still stay competitive. because those  boosts dont make me better. infct im in more control and im not lining their pockets because im an idiot who   pays them a fee for  something i already paied for or lose  acess to what i invested in. instead  i bought the game and keep  my investment  without any futher payment

I dont think boosts will make you or me or anyone better. But they can make your character in the game better. At least for a while. You dont have to buy them. But a lot of other people will. Thats why the business model works. If there was no demand for boosts or time savers there would be no boosts or time savers for sale in typical cash shop games. But they are common. And if I had to guess I would say they are probably the most profitable items a company can sell in a CS.
