So far I've loved everything about GW, but now I found a problem that really bothers me. Aparently in order to play GW 2 on your account, you must be in the same region you pruchased it. Currently I live in Canada and I pre-purchased. But here's my problem. I'll be moving to Europe within a year, and what do I do then? I don't want to lose all my characters, and on top of that have to buy new copy of the game in order to play again. I think it's a serious problem, and I'm sure there're a lot of people in the same situation. It's something ANet must hear of and fix. One of the solutions could be paid transfer. Anyway I hope the issue gets resolved.

Anet is working on a solution for those who travel/move. be patient.
I've got the straight edge.
But they have said that you can move your PvE server to another region so region locking the client makes little sense to me?
A lot of games have this problem. I guess you shouldn't buy any new games until after you move.
I read the same on twitter...they are actively working on a solution.
Ya, Doesn't make much sense to me. Considering their whole philosophy revolves around giving people choices, this seems like an awfully stupid move on their part (unless we just aren't fully understanding what they are trying to say).
The whole thing is rather confusing tbh.
Usually the reason why they have regional clients is because they have contracts with service providers, distributors or there are legal considerations. It's not a matter of them wanting to divide the world into regions for the heck of it.
I won't be moving for at least another year.
Ya, that sucks. They have said recently that they are working on a solution for people who move around. NCSoft is a big company. They might figure something out.. but it'd suck to buy a game not knowing and find out you can't transfer or use your account in your new country.
Probably wont be an issue. Anet is as aware of the problem as you are, and they do seem to care and have commented on figuring something out. I know, waiting to find out what the solution is can be a little nerve racking, but I think all will be well in the end for you and others with this issue.
Furthermore Im sympathetic to people like you with this issue. Anet seems to be too. Dont know why people have to post useless advice like that. " My car broke down and there's no bus, and Im in a real mess here being I cant get to work. " "Well dude, I guess you'll just have to walk or ride a bike. " " Its 40 miles! " *shrug*
Yep, that has been my assumption thus far on the client region locking. Seeing that they are allowing us to play on what servers we choose, it seems that they're doing as much as possible for us to have that freedom of playing where we like.
Thanks bud. Made me feel better.
"I hope someone fixes your car." isnt really any more helpful than "Start walking."
Just informing him Anet has said they are working on a solution. Im not saying I hope they do. Im saying they intend too. Which is the same as saying, " You have nothing to worry about". World of difference.
We'll more than likely hear what the solution for that is before launch, because this upset a lot more people than most thought it would. Anet heard the cry, and said essentially, " We hear ya. We're on it. "
Oh, well that's entirely different. That's real nice of you. I hope it gets fixed, too.
If none of you can figure out their reasoning behind this then I have little hope for the advancement of the human race.
A. Hypothetical-If your in Canada, would it not make sense to play on a Canadian based server? Not only for community purposes but also so that the connection to the server based in Canada be faster.
B. If you live in EU, and are playing on a CA based server, it would have a terrible drag on connection to said server, causing not only yourself to lag but say if 1000 people from EU are connecting to a CA server could cause server wide connectivity issues.
Anet just wants people to play on the servers that will benefit them the most community/connectivity wise. If you have a max lvl toon then you move, just server transfer, it's why the feature is there.
I don't think you understand how the whole thing works. It's not about being able to play on different servers. It's about not being able to play at all if you move to a different zone. Let me explain. If I buy the game in Canada, I will not be able to use that account to play the game when I move to Europe, because I'll be playing from Europe. Also ANet already stated that you'll be able to play on servers in a different zone, for example EU servers from NA.
I've also seen the post where anet said they are working on it. There is no limitation on which server you play on. Only on the client. Seeing as this is a mostly digital distribution, I seen no reason why Anet can just provide a link through customer support to allow you to switch the client you are using. Basically change the account flag from NA to EU, and let you grab the new client. In fact, Im sure they can do it, but there are probably legal and/or licensing issues they have to sort out first. If you notice, there are actually only two versions: EU for europe, and NA for the rest of the world. I would bet on some sore of legal issue with the European side of things.
Actually you can still play from the EU you would be directed through the NA data servers though. Same with GW1 (I moved the other way around) I was told there is not a mechanic in place to switch account to a different data server but there will be with #2.
If your in EU and choose and EU server but brought the game in NA you still route through the NA data server for ping of 180-450
It woud be interesting to no the exact legal issue they are having so then players in europe could lobby their politicians to sort things out. Probably wouldn't fix things but would be nice to know exactly what is the issue.
The Enlightened take things Lightly
One issue I can think of is VAT. Americans don't pay VAT... so if you bought the NA version to use in the EU and didn't pay VAT then they'd send the crushers to your house and turn your family into soylent green.
I think the US also has laws about exporting 100 year old cryptography, like simple XOR, and since Canada is a US territory they probably have the same rules.
It's all very complicated and messy. Much too complicated for us common folk to fully understand.
It'd be nice to hear about the exact reasons why things are the way they are, but I don't suppose if it's a contract issue... ie: X company has agreed to host servers for GW2 given profit on regional sales and doesn't want to miss a single red cent, that they'd be too happy to share that with us.
lol wat?
Like the others have said, ArenaNet is looking for a way to accomodate customers that move between continents. I think they should sell an "Internationa Edition" that is $10 extra and can be played regardless of continent.
I'm not very good at geography and may not have a good grasp of how the world actually works.
wasnt there a single world wide server in GW1?

Yes but based on where you brought the box is from which data server you pass. For example I brought mine in the UK in 2005 and had a 34 or so ping, moved to Canada and it went right up, even if I played on EU or NA server. Double whammy. From my understanding GW2 will be the same. In GW 1 they were unable to relocate me to a NA data server so I just had to bear with it.
What's funny was my wife was playing from same location in NA with a less than 50 ping and mine was 5 times hers. My tracert was all over the place.
Yeah lets bring politicians into it! Brilliant! lol
PS I know there are no legal issues.
