New player questions

Hello there. I've read several of the articles here, and I will admit, I have literally no idea what half of you are talking about. I never played the other game (HnH?) however, I have secured my guaranteed beta spot.

As such, I was curious if someone could kind of explain this game a bit? What's the purpose of it, how does it work (the permadeath thing I understand, don't worry). Is it a city-builder, is it like Terraria...?

Also, could someone explain some general starter tips, i.e. things someone completely new to the type of game would NOT know when they started? Obviously this will be a new game, but if it is simply a V2 of a previous game, I'm sure some veterans would have some tips.

Waiting for something fresh to arrive on the MMO scene...

I'd say it's more like Wurm Online; "a settlement builder"

You basically find a corner of the woods and bunker down, trying to survive, and eventually thrive. You can go at it alone, or better yet, in groups that can parse the duties out amongst others. The only difference is that HnH/Salem are a top-down viewpoint and are way more hardcore (death and all that). Also, the PvP can either be the selling point to you, or the last straw at some point.

In HnH it was more of the latter for me.... I like to build without threat of Russian insurgency.

Its the successor of Haven and Hearth. The Wurm Online element "teraforming" is hardly a way to tag this game more like Wurm Online. Also Salem is 3D not top down. So you are incorrect.

I strongly suggest you spend a few days with Haven and Hearth. Craft a few things, make a claim and read up on the wiki. Once you do that I think it won't be so overwhelming when you play Salem.

i agree check on HnH. thats what i did while its jaded my view of salem abit (as salem is almost exact clone of HnH going by the press videos) it can be an enjoyable game.

the biggest issue with both games (least with HnH) is the perma death kills alot of new players early on and cause alot of rage quit (i would assume salem will have a similar steep learning curve that HnH has as well)

from what i found of HnH, the game mechanic is kind of trying to be realisic in that, you have to level up not only skill points but stat points to do anything major.. like mining you cant mine at default stats you have to grind them as well.

so in that case you have to work quite hard to get places solo. trusting people is hard but can be rewarding in some instances as well.

you will mostlikely suffer the typical perma death game issue of greifers but thats not really a game's fault, just dont get discouraged when you die.. i know from HnH death is soooooo freaking easy to do ><" (friend died early on by swiming without enough stats) best advice is go with friends (as you have clearly got 3 other people to play with you in salam, id team up with them and try and  work as a team... will most likely make the game more enjoyable)

It is not a true account permadeath, there is a generational aspect to it so some of you built up skills survive in the next generation, your name and friend lists, goods you were carrying etc go when you die.
