I wonder what are your hopes for TSW?
I gave many mmorpg titles a shot and my intrest in this genre started with UO many many years ago. There are many things about TSW that seem almost too good to be true and I expect things won't be all perfect at the launch, but a bug or two, server crashes etc. don't worry me too much. There is mainly one thing I hope TSW will succeed at:
Keep the game in a way that avoids the urge to 'reach endgame' that tends to consist of more or less repetitive raids and pvp. A problem the way I see it is that most games make it really difficult to level with friends - a few levels will turn quests from impossible to horribly easy + 90% of the quests tend to be easy enough to solo in the first place. Hence once any of your friends / you had a chance to play a few hours more there are fair chances that you won't be able to properly party together anymore (the 'power levels' are simply too far apart) - since this won't change until you hit that max level it often turns into an unwanted race for the endgame. If in TSW a player with more 'experience points' is rather more flexible instead of extremly more powerful I will be extremly happy.

I expect this game to suffer The Old Republics fate. People will ignore the story and optional puzzles and adventure elements and just PL themselves till they got all 500 abilities and then just whiiine that they got nothing to do after they had skipped 70% of content to max their character ASAP.
We are talking about 30+ days (played) of "PLing" to get all the 525 abilities unlocked. There won't be as much QQ as in SWTOR since only a minor part of gamers will reach 525 abilities in few months. In SWTOR you were out of content in less than a month Oo
Also there's 3 difficulties of dungeons of which the hardest will have "blocks" that require you to bring certain abilities while still having proper gear. These will be 5-man dungeons but they compare them to raiding in difficulty.
I don't have any specific hopes for TSW. I do hope it does well, as I've said before I'll take the wait and see approach on Tera and TSW but I want them to do well. We need a good mix of mmos doing well so the game companies have to work hard at keeping us. One thing that does turn me away immediately from TSW is reserving names for $9.99 and character slots for $9.99 already. Will have to wait and see how this game is around xmas or the new year next year.

Dark Age of Camelot
SWTOR developed 8 stories across two factions and 8 classes, and is likely the best leveling game ever due to so much sub level cap content and incentives to make alts.
The hardest single group instances will be on farm status two weeks after launch of TSW, unless they are bugged/not tuned correctly as was the case with any group/raid content in AoC. SWTOR has released 2 group instances and 2 or 3 raid zones since release, I know the third raid instance is being tuned as my guild tested it. After release most of the TSW staff will be moved to something else so doubt development will be anything but very slow. So hope they have plenty of stuff to do besides grinding X mob or X instance to level up abilities.
What is the point in having all abilities? Most people can not play a single class very well so I would be worried if the usual DPS switched to healing or the toking healer caster switched to tanking. Unless the content is to easy. Games already have that in SWTOR I can be a tank or melee DPS, I am geared for both but know how to tank well and DPS is not as good because when I make choose gear I prioritize tanking, so my DPS set is less. Now gearing for multiple jobs would be a block so you still will likely need to specialize for anything not to easy. TSW developers seem to release stuff into the live game of AoC untested so they perhaps don't even know.
Alts can't be considered as content. Creating multiple alts is a niche among the MMORPG genre and most of the gamers will settle for 2 characters in SWTOR (1 empire / 1 republic) and when it comes to PvP people will always go with the FOTM. The whole legacy system is a really weak incentive with the only important thing is having 4 class buffs with single character (which requires to hit 45ish with all 4 archetypes). Considering levelling in SWTOR is incredibly painful after seeing the story on both sides. There's no alternative levelling routes in SWTOR, only following the single quest path with occasionally doing the space mission/warzone dailies. 'Nuff said, SWTOR lacked content because their design was way off and the only endgame content worth mentioning was Warzones and the _one_ raid. Funny thing is that SWTOR is still lacking content even 5 months since launch.
The 2nd paragraph of your post is just speculation on how things went with AoC. Sure if one would skip all the story in TSW the game would definately feel flat since according to Funcom there's 250 hours of story in TSW @ launch. The actual difficulty of dungeons in TSW and their requirements including artificial progression blocking is unknown so yet again just speculations. Will the whole dev team move to a next game? Only thing we know is that it happened with AoC and things went very south after that. One could think they learned from their mistakes. The endgame won't have anything "new and exciting". Dungeons/Raids/Warzone/PvP Zones that have XP/Gear treadmill, the difference is that you'll be grinding the XP for quite _awhile_. And yes you will be gearing for shitloads of specs so if that scares you, stick with single/dual-spec mmorpgs
What's the point of reaching the level cap and skipping all the story? There's no point, hardcore players just want to achieve everything they can asap and then QQ at forums about no content. TSW is going to be a very challenging game and you will need to master multiple roles. Rift was a good crack at this system, but the trees were too limited and the content got simplified so people wouldn't need to take full advantage of the soul trees. All the MMORPGs out there don't force you to play a role or have skills from a role that you are not the most fond of. TSW will demand you to adjust to the content and play roles/hybrids that can provide different things. Playing a certain role won't be enough, you will need to have skills from other roles as well to clear the dungeons. A game that takes people out of their comfort zone and actually challenges them gets my vote.
This game is not for everyone and they never said it would be.
It's a lot more challenging and demanding than your run-of-the-mill western mmorpg.
TSW is rated PEGI 16 in EU and M in the US.
P.S I've played SWTOR since launch and I don't have a single alt. Playing 3 hours a day finishing my PvP dailies while waiting for the promised RANKED Warzones.
Having 3 factions is the main reason I want to play this game. If the end game PvP is somewhat close to DAoC PvP/RvR (both open-world or battleground), I will be very happy.
I hope there will be clear fraction-wide goals for PvP that everyone of your chosen fraction can achieve together, and hence creating a community feeling. I think it is important to give players a sense or pride of belonging to the fraction.
There's definately potential for great PvP.
But we'll have to see more before deciding on that 8)
I hope the setting is immersive and and they improve the animations. While I am thrilled with the classless skill system, the investigation and stealth missions, and 3 factions; my primary interest in TSW since day one has been the setting. I have wanted a horror MMO for so long.
I am one of those who loves story in my games. I really enjoyed it in TOR and I am looking forward to it in TSW. The NPCs, from what we have seen, seem really quirky and fleshed out. I can't wait to play in this world.
I hope that the release product is completely finished. I don't mean necessarily bug-free, but that all the planned features are in it, not is a patch released at some undisclosed future point which seems to be getting more common (e.g. SWTOR, D3).
I hope that the content is solid throughout the game. I remember in AoC when I left Tortuga the content disappeared.
I hope the cash shop has only vanity and convenience items. Wait, scratch that, I wish a sub-based game didn't have a cash shop but since it does I really want to make sure that I have a fully playable game where I don't feel compelled to buy more inventory space right away (or things like this).
I hope that they truly capture the mythos of H.P. Lovecraft and bring it to life in that insidious, creeping manner of the books.
I hope combat doesnt feel like WoW with different skins.
And assuming all the above happen, I hope the game is really successful and long-lived.

my hopes....Lovecraft + Xfiles + personal interaction That's what I hope I get oh and an adult community

I hope it's a great, fun and at times intellectual action mystery adventure game that does very well for Funcom... but not so well that EA will buy them
BOYCOTTING EA / ORIGIN going forward.
Didn't you make an "I quit" post yourself lamenting about SWTOR? Could have sworn you did.
So somehow your gripes with the game were legit but you think others weren't? If I remember correctly you didn't even make it very far into the game.
Anyways, as for the OP, I hope they deliver on what they're trying to do and the game isn't an absolute mess when it launches like AOC was.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
I hope that the zones are large enough to get lost in. I will truely hate it if every mission is basically "Go here again... but next door" ala mxo and coh/cov.
That is the only thing holding me back from a LTS.
I am hoping I get to play a game where I feel like I am in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Grimm, Angel, and Supernatural all rolled into one.
Im hoping for a game with deep lore, hidden corners, and puzzles that are not solved for months if not years. A game within an enigma.
I'm hoping for enough content, so that I'm not able to play through the whole game within three month.
If the PvP is good, then the PvE-content isn't that important, but the raids shouldn't be as easy-mode like they're in SWTOR for example, where we cleared all of them within a month after release...
Would be nice if it comes out and people are blown away by it. It's one of those games I intend to wait 6 months or so to see how it's going after mmo gamers have had the ups and downs of it to get an honest opinion on it. I'll keep my eye on it, because it sounds like it's a bit different, and I like that... but for now I'm anticipating GW2 and Planetside 2.

This was the dealbreaker for me. Sub + CS= no thx. You know they will inconvenience you to hell to push you into the CS. I'll keep an eye on it after release and if they keep out the excessive annoyance of making gameplay/mechanics geared to make it miserable without being nickel and dimed on top of my sub, I'll play it.
Aye, from the get go that's a big negative for me. I still hope it does well, but it would have to be an absolutely wonderfully, next generation/innovation wonder, for me to jump in and play it.

Dark Age of Camelot
Hm, these days I am reluctant to hope.
But I do hope it brings back something that the greater MMOs had, faction pride. Something SWTOR is totally devoid of. I can see even TSW the facebook game created a LOT of faction pride and I hope that carries over to the MMO. Faction pride really does a lot good to a MMO. It's what made people play WOW and DAoC, you liked your factions and mock-hated the other! That makes a huge part of motivation, even if you don't PVP.
Second, I hope the setting and "feeling" is right. That is something hard to nail. I can't say 100% why this game feels right and that doesn't. The animated, believable worlds are surely a factor. SWTOR failed in so many areas here, tunnel worlds, not animated mobs and npcs, no city life, no ambient sounds asf. If TSW does that better, it will be a huge bonus. And places like Tortage from AoC proved that Funcom CAN do city life good. For me Tortage really felt like a place, somehow, where Coruscant or Nar Shadda just feel like theatre stages. I need the feeling to be able to explore and discover hidden places. (Oh and for the record, Mario-jumping to Datacrons does NOT count as exploring!)
I must feel at home in a MMO world, above all other things.

My hope is that it is a good game...... but I haven't played beta and I'm gonna wait and see. I sure like the premise and hope it is innovative and new and exciting to hold my attention. I am waiting for the "after the game comes out" feedback first... to play it safe! LOL

Nice thread, I was hoping a few of these would pop up in the TSW section here on mmorpg.
While I dont research games like some people seem to do by the info they can share with us on these forums(some of it sounds more like developers chating amoungs them selves) I do love mmos and especially horror, so of course this game is one I like to watch closely. There offiicial forums havent really captivated me to keep reading though, thats just the way the cookie crumbles I guess.
There seems to be a group of people that have completely different ideas of what TSW is for some odd reason and that in tern confuses everyone including me to some extent. It is going to be heavily instanced, that much we do know just by what has been shown to us so far so people thinking its going to be more open world and sandboxy, its not AFAICT.
Also, I really dont think this is going to be a game that is very inovative in terms of trying new things and stepping outside of what we know as "standerd mmo fare", there seems to be this overwelming sence that its going to though amoungs us. People looking for something anything at all different then themepark in this game I dont think are going to find it, I think the misconceptions stand out for some reason with TSW more then any other game.
Enough about TSW's misconceptions, as with many current MMO's, themepark reigns supream and TSW is no exception. Just how linear is this game going to be throughout its pregression into the later stages is what Im looking forward to seeing. I really think SWTOR hit the nail on the head in terms of quest progression and zone management, I dont think TSW stands a chance in those catagories given the money and amount of resources Bioware poored into that part of there game. Coming off of SWTOR, TSW might seem under developed possibly from where I stand.
So Im hoping the game isnt to linear I guess is what im saying.
PS:Yes the ARG's will be inovative
I agree with you that "There seems to be a group of people that have completely different ideas of what TSW is for some odd reason", but, you are wrong in some aspects.
TSW is going to be more open than you think, expect zones as large as GW2's
TSW is a themepark MMO yes, but when some people say it is sandbox, they are refering to the Character Development part of the game. (I don't give f*** if it is sandbox, themepark, themebox, sandpark... blablabla... the only thing that matter is if the game is fun).
TSW is not MMO 2.0, but it does have some new stuff, for exemple: investigation missions; it is based in our world; the crafting systen looks gorgeus and also, the fact that everyone can get all abilities allows devs to make challenges never seen before in MMOs, because now they can taylor the content without needing to appeal to every class/build.
I never played SW:TOR, but in all the press previews of the game ( hands on events) the quests and progression of the game got a lot of praise(it is one of the strong points of TSW), and some of then like this preview, even compared it to SW:TOR, anyway, you need to play the beta to be sure...
expect the earlier areas of the game to be very linear but when you finish the basic content of Solomon Island, the game gets less and less linear, the story is made in a way that you need to collect the pieces, and then put it back together.
OK
My Hopes: I hope that tanks don't become useless in PvP
My Fear: Lack of some basic things in launch like: barbers/ hairdressers or missing some guild mechanics...
my only hope is that it is as fun as it looks like it has the potential of being. i have fairly low to reasonable expectations for the game, so i am hoping that i am surprised.
I've a special place in my heart for the "urban Fantasy" genre as it is called, defined as modern times games where the world is our own but there exists magic/mythological creatures and what not.
Secret World is basically the first serious attempt to bring this genre to a MMO, the World of Darkness MMO will be the second and I am looking forward to both.
My hopes for this game are:
1) That it has smooth and nice gameplay with many variations and possibilities
2) that the non-combat puzzles and quests end up being a nice way to introduce you to the theme, setting and lore of the game.
3) That the 3 factions are different enough from each other in flavor if not in substance.
Finally... Someone mentioned SWTOR... there were people at max level in SWTOR in less than a week, I hope this will not be the case here.
