I think that's what I'm going to focus on trying out for the first WBE. A sampling of each, then pick one to focus on for the rest of the weekend.
The plan would be to try the other four next month and settle on my primary character for launch.
The other four classes are not out of the running for my primary character, I just want to get a good contrasting variety for each of the next two WBEs. (I was going to chose Ranger as number 3, but I'll give them another five or six weeks to tweak Ranger pets further).
I plan to try as many classes as I can. I just hope I get to grips with the controls and switching weapons and all that jazz quickly so I can start pwning face and testing builds.
I'm going for a human warrior to test sword's dual wielding, and as for the next beta i'm going to roll a thief so i can choose from those two which one im going to use at start.
i started playing MMOs in 2000 with an EQ-Necromancer. the most versatile class i ever played. and i played or at least tested mostly all MMOs since then. so i believed, that the Necromancer is My Style and my most beloved class. but the MMO-model changed and the gamemechanic of good old EQ is gone. something like the EQ-Necromancer does not exist anymore in this world of fast action-oriented combat utterly micromanaged by the devs (called Refining).
so i had to abstract a bit more and came to the conclusion, that my prefered class is a pet-class with full controllable pet (better customizable, too), fighting from range primarily, with a huge arsenal of crowd control. and it does not matter, how this class is named (e.g. in SWTOR my prefered class was the Imperial Agent)
again, strong cc as it was available in old-school games, does not exist anymore. same reason: fast-action oriented combat and micromanagement. the old style crowd control with strong, long lasting snares, roots and mezzes was replaced by short and weaker cc-spells, more interrupting than controlling. and they added moves, rolls and jumps as a kind of cc in the most modern MMOs. i have to accept that, and adjust my expectations about crowd control accordingly.
the GW2 class, which will perhaps support my prefered playstyle best, is the Ranger.
i would like to play a Necromancer, but the pet is not controllable and seems not be able to hold aggo as good as the rangers one (i know aggo-mgt is different in GW2). also the Necromancer seems to be more often in closerange, if played efficiently, than the ranger, even if they can do both, depending on the weapon. also the concept of managing debuffs extensively, for beeing efficient as a GW2-Nec is fully different from the EQ-Necromancer, who suffered just in one department: these debuffs.
so i will play the ranger, even if i will miss my lifetap badly. a female norn most propably. if i have to stare at a butt all day long, i prefer a nice one. thats what i have learned in all these asian F2P games, where male characters are all look like metrosexual young lads and are unplayable for me anyways.
during this beta i will be trying out norn warrior and human thief ... im trying to figure out which one i want to start with when the game goes live :P
