It looks like you're new here. If you want to get involved, click one of these buttons!
You click the enter button to log in. With great anticipiation from looking at the loading screen, your eyes graze at the beauty of a world, where the sun is rising and you can see far as the clippling plane allows. You look around and you see no barriers. You could almost feel the rays of the sun simmering on your armor. You grasp your sword looking straight forward ready to assail on that level 40 hill giant plundering that small village where they repair your armor for free. The world is open, wander! It's time to feel immersed in a world, what an mmorpg should of always been.
As an old school mmo player I want to log into a world. I don't want to feel like I am in a lobby with que's entering a dungeon. I don't want to walk into a zone and see random mountains to act as a barrier to restrict travel. Only certain terrains should restrict types of travel or no travel at all. I want to be in an open seamless world where travel feel's immersive. Does anyone want this too?
I recently created a thread called, "continual state of world progression." There I talked about what it would be like to play in an open seamless world on a single shard server. Here is the world map that idea would I believe would work in. The map was created in a 2d cad program called CC3. The map graphics do not reflect the graphics I intend to have in game. This world is designed for a seamless world hosted on a single shard server.

I know some of you have already seen this map several times and yes I am beating a dead horse lol. But I recently got their annual and they have some new symbols and new textures. They worked great with the map. So I am showing off my world again for those who enjoyed it and people who haven't seen it. And yes, I found a different font than Papyrus. I hope the font is readable. And please, don't comment on geographical or biome errors.
Red text = regular zones, black = interior and exterior dungeons, blue = racial starting areas, green = raid campaign locations, purple = other friendly cities and world wonders and brown = untravelable places.
The new zones that are revamped are as follows: Jacal Barrens, Grimspire Crags, Desolate Realm, Hazemyst Glade, Weepin Fens, Primal Badlands, Arid Dominion, Orsa'ryn, Swindlers Bluffs, Sea of Souls and Fangkaun Swamp.
Comment on what do you want as a player? Do you want to log into a world or a game? And why? Does this map reflect a good mmo world on the surface? (I know it gets deeper with mechanics, lore, its just a map). Also, do you feel as if this world sparks imagination? What are some places that are intriguing to explore?

Do you want to log into a World? or a Game?
--------------------------------------------------------
Both: The fact is I just want the game to be made well. When I played EVE, it felt like a world and I enjoyed it for a couple of years. WoW felt more like a game, but a very enjoyable one, that I also enjoyed for quite some time.
You can enjoy either as long as they are well made. Sometimes I feel like playing a game, sometimes I want to lose myself in a world. Both are valid in from my perspective.
All games shouldn't be the same and not every player wants just one or the other. I am glad their is an EVE and Darkfall out there to play, but I am also glad there is a WoW and ST:TOR as well.
My belief is it doesn't have to be "either-or" and what I am in the mood for this year may not be what I want two years down the road.
I agree with this quite a bit. The only small problem I have is how many well made worlds there are vs well made games. But I do enjoy games that purely focus on gameplay.
I want to login to a world, a world of beauty and scope, where commuity is more important than anything else.
I hope to find this someday
World.
I prefer a seamless world that just drops everything as is and lets you figure out the rest, or requires player made mods in order to make it easier. Example being, I dont want the designers to walk me from point A to point B. I prefer that the community needs to figure it out and share the knowledge on its own. That concept seems to help build a better online cmmunity.
I would prefer if a game did not offer maps that open as you go but gives a built in map creator so you can begin making maps of various locations and share them with the community.
I like little to no help from the designers at all, but instead make a challneging and complex world that forces you to figure things out and make sense of it on your own and with the help of only the playerbase.
I also agree that in the older MMO half the fun was running around, finding some passage or cave that led you to a new area and realizing you are in WAY over your head. The fear involved with the exploration made it so much more enjoyable.
Johnie you bring up good points. I was trying to distinguish the immersion factor between a world and game. I didn't know how else to catergorize them. Maybe lobby would be a better word than game? "My belief is it doesn't have to be "either-or" and what I am in the mood for this year may not be what I want two years down the road." This is how the genre use to be, games for specific niches. To me, it was more defined then it is now.
Cauthon I also agree with you as well that I play a game focused on gameplay. I'd like to have great gameplay that is within a world.

QFE, as a social gamer the "world-iness" trumps the "game-iness" for me in this genre.
World.
I'm first an explorer so I want to be able to go and explore what I can see. And if I can't do that, it's sometimes game breaking.
My vote for an MMO is World. I immerse myself in MMO's I play games on my console.
"I am not in a server with Gankers...THEY ARE IN A SERVER WITH ME!!!"
World.
Unfortunately the games currently out in a world format and crapped upon by people using this site on a daily basis for whatever reason. Not saying that these current games developers arent at fault or ignoring the budget issues, but still. Im just as sick of themeparks as I am of people who knock certain sandboxes for whatever reason.
World.
If I wanted to play a game I would play a single player action game or FPS. But seeing as I dont do single player games except for the occasional "great" RPG like Skyrim, I stick with MMO's.
For me I want to be immersed, and get away from it all after a long day at work and get inside a world of gritty adventure. Its so much more then a game for me. I want to grow with my character and see his development up to level cap.
Nice map, other then some of the names are beyond cheesy but I would def play in a world based on that map.

@OP: but what has your post and your poll to do with your question in the title of this thread?
I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.
Game.
More precisely, multiplayer co-op games. If it happens to have a world, and not distract from the game, it is ok. But a fun game is what i am looking for.
Do you want to log into a World? or a Game? Sometimes I want to log into a world, sometimes a game... which is why I have several games on my computer. I have differing tastes. It also depends a great deal on my mood and the time I have available to play. Sometimes I just log into leftfordead 1 or 2 and kill zombies because that is all I can handle, other times I play a single playe like skyrim or a strategy game like crusader kings II(if I am feeling challenged) or if my friends want me to play a mmo I go with that. The question seems to infer that people like only 1 of those choices, ever. Maybe I am just complicated but , like I said, it depends.
Currently bored with MMO's.
I would guess a game.....
No matter how cynical you become, its never enough to keep up - Lily Tomlin
Was trying to kill two birds with one stone. I posted my world map before on here and wanted to talk about something different then the last thread as well as showing off the edited version of my world map. The map is designed to fit the "world" structure more so than a "lobby game" like wow.
Both. The biggest problem with world though is that everyone has a different definition for it. For me a world doesn't have to be seamless for it to feel like a world.
GW1 was a world to me. I could explore and especially in prophecies I could play as I wanted.
AoC was not a world to me. It felt disjointed.
Both of these games are instanced, yet one felt like a world and one didn't.
Now others would say neither are a world, because it's not seamless or not open. or whatever other reason.
On top of that it must feel like a game to me as well. No world will keep me occupied on its own.
What about any thoughts for the map :P
Do you want to log into a World? Or a Game?
Both. A world which is a game and a game which is a world.
a Game with a World
I'm tired of themepark rides though, "Do this then do this then do that.." "wait I want to wander off and look around a bit..." "sorry, you can't get off the ride at this time." or you do wander off and there's nothing to see, nothing to do that's not on the rails.
I've recently gone back to Everquest 2 after Rift, SWOTOR, etc and amazed at how much more there is to actually do in the game other ride the rails.
I am looking forward to World of Darkness for the world side of things, but I've seen so many disappointments in MMOs lately that I'm not holding my breath.
All the pieces to make a truly great, immersive world are out there I think, they just haven't been put together.
The map as a map seems great.
But, you just asked about a map.
You didnt ask about whether the game mechanics or concepts will work, which is what really matters.
@# ........ rebooting ..........
Oderint, dum metuant.
Oh absolutely. I know when I look at a fantasy map I wonder what places are like and "Oooo I want to explore this and that and go here and there". It would be interesting if I could post all of the game mechanics I have designed for this. But it would be really long and I doubt anyone would read it.
Personally, the game mechanics that grab me more are sandboxish. I want to build, refine, create books and ale, being able to craft a staff, or put up a fence. Craft a boat, and put it down the river. etc.
Too much of a "developed" map may not leave too much room for player construction or items to grab in order to make armor dye, etc.
a game. the REAL world is real enough
