Anyone have an idea?

I played AO at launch and want to try again.  I registered a new account with funcom and installed the game from my old CD that I still had but it doesnt let me play.  Its odd, I get a popup login when I launch the game that wont accept my login, but if I cancel that and login via the AO console, it lets me past the login, but when I click "play" it says character login failed.  I don't need a specific install of the game for the free trial, do I?

    Yes you do.  You cannot get the free trial with an old account.
