I couldn't get into beta today, some unknown patch problem. I spent about 40 mins in chat with support, but no go.
My question, hoestly is tera "better" (opinon yes, I want opinion..) than swtor ?
Meh not really. The reality is they are both very traditional MMO's with slight differences. If you decided you didn't like SWTOR for w/e reason, chances are you won't like TERA for long either. It's just to , basic I guess is the word that best fits what I'm trying to say.
The combat is a step in a better direction but other games are doing so much more that it doesn't score TERA many points in my book.
Ahh well, glad I got to try it and on Max settings the game looks pretty good so theres that.
Was in BETA a few weeks ago and personally thought it was horrible... Each to their own I guess, but I predict people will be trashing it like every other MMO in recent history within a month (if that). Though TOR isn't all that, it's far better than TERA.
Apples and Oranges. With that said, I don't think Tera is going to be as successful as a lot of people are making it out to be. Somebody compared it to Aion and I think it's a pretty accurate comparison. It has great combat but it's just new paint on the same old "grindfest", in my humble opinion.
TERA & SWTOR are very different beasts, I prefer SWTOR's story, but preferTERA's combat.
The combat in TERA feels like it would have been much better with smarter AI & the ability to move & trigger abilities - at least some movement, having some experience of weapons-fighting from various past hobbies you can't exactly run whilst swinging an axe all over the shop but moving in, out, to either side in a "stepping" movement is critical to good use of any martial weapon & some of the physics used by the BAMs is ridiculous to the extreme, but with that said the TERA combat is a big step in a more interesting direction. SWTOR's combat feels stale, lacking any kind of strategy, okay so the Operations & flashpoints require strategy in how you deal with the bosses but those mechanics are more to do with how the team as a unit works rather than your personal methodologies & that's the big thing that breaks many of the story elements, some enemies are supposed to be sly & require inventive stratagies only for the actual fight to be a toe to toe button mashing exercise - huge anti-climax in almost every fight ends up the exact same.
SWTOR has well-written stories & feels more engaged with the characters, though the world is more authentic the life populating it feels dead & cardboard cut-out, TERA's world feels more "alive" but it's just too clean & plastic in looks, a common fault I have with asian fantasy aesthetics.
Purely personal preference is for SWTOR, it just engages me more & has more of a RP feel to it than TERA, TERA's very weakly developed questing & story-telling let's the game down, though there is enough in it to find it fun, if only it wasn't being ran through Frogster (in Europe) I might have given it a shot & purchased it.
" TERA is a flat world whereas SWTOR is a dynamic world. = it's time someone did a full trek across the continent of Arun, across all the zones, no loading screens, with their incredible vistas. Continent of Arun is the first and only continent players have been able to explore in TERA.

Ok really guys serioussly, you can say you don't like asian art style, you can say you don't like Elins or Popori, you can say it's too cute, you can say it's too bright and everything else about art style and design.
BUT
Tera uses UNREAL ENGINE 3 and please please please don't even start to compare Heroengine to Unreal Engine 3, really if you even know how to turn on a pc please don't embarass yourself.
Technically and I repeat tecnically the graphic of TERA is superior to SWTOR, there is no dobut about that. Because UE3 > Heroengine.
The art style is all another matter, everyone have a different taste for it. I prefer Tera over SWTOR but that's just me.
First comment. Just because the world has no loading screens does not make it dynamic. Dynamic means that you have an environment that is interactive and responds to you. It is an environment that moves. TERA is just like every other MMO where if you run through grass.... you're inside the grass.. the grass doesn't move.
Anyone who believes that the Unreal Engine 3 is good is kidding themselves. Unreal Engine 3 is an average and generic engine. It brings nothing amazing to the table. For every great game that uses a heavily modified UE3 there are 1000 more that just look crappy and suck.
Although SWTOR based their game around Hero engine they haevily modified it to the point where it resembles nothing of the Hero engine at all. The engine used is not the reason why it is good. You can download the Cryengine 3 for free and see that even with the engine you do not get the same calibre of graphics you would get in Crysis 2.
If you check out system requirements for both games the minimum requirements for SWTOR are ever so slightly higher.

Who are these people and what have they been claiming? If anything, what you're seeing is the few supporters of the game fighting off people who either claim to have played the game or dumb posts in general about certain mechanics which they know nothing about after playing for 4 hours.
"Somebody compared it to Aion and I think it's a pretty accurate comparison."
I disagree and I used to go nuts trying to play AION as far back as winter of 2008. To quote you "Apples and Oranges."

I think it's a fair comparison. Sure, game mechanics may not be entirely similar, but both games are molded in the same style and go after the same fanbase. TERA doesn't seem to suffer from a lot of the issues that plagued Aion in the West, so I think it'll carve out a nice niche for itself with those who would have otherwise played Aion as well as some people who play it only because of its innovative combat.
I don't think it has the hype or the means to compete with WoW, GW2, or even SW:TOR should BioWare pull their heads out of their asses, but again, I think TERA will have its place in the American market.
Yes only because Tera did what SWTOR doesn't it actually offers customization and has better graphics.
Gameplay wise it feels the same as WOW to me because its kill to level up click these keys to dodge this and do this action but beyond that probabily the best MMORPG currently out at the moment. I was expecting a game like Vindictus with Tera where you actually had to have skill.
I can't be for sure because the game is still in beta but since skills are aimed I wonder how long it will be before a multihack is released I hate saying this but Aion had them I wonder if this game will too.
Also I can't be sure but I wonder in in the future Tera is going to have a cash shop with MicroTransactions which require a fee to change the appearance of your character that would totally suck and I would Unsubscribe.
But I do have to say this game is better than SWTOR all around in my view although TSW, or GW2 might offer better gameplay only time will tell. I look foward to TSW offering something a bit different such as like APB did when it was released but take APB and Fallen Earth off the market if FunCom does it right it could put a serious dent in the income that G1 makes on both those titles although it depends if they offer RealTime customization of appearance and actual play which has not been seen before.

OK yes, over the top high fantasy setting aside they don't compare with each other for me. Mandarines and oranges I guess then?
Yellow highlighted part. That's all the supporters want but where the heck does this animosity come from? TERA so far, has been exactly what was promised and envisioned by its creators.
That people don't like it or certain parts of it: OK, I could never be "mad" at that. Everyone likes what they like, it's just the way some folks are bringing their message across which I highly disagree with.
Except I have no animosity towards Tera, nor anything of the sort. Both games I find simply lacking from a number of perspectives. But if asked to pick which is better (as the OP asks) I wouldn't be able to honestly say.
It's great you enjoy your game but now I'd like some developer to develop something I can actually like too.

Highlighted part: The wording is different/better. No-one can argue your comment based on that alone unless they're being disputatious just for the sake of it.
See the difference versus just saying "hopingnextAAAgameroundupsucksless"? Or am I just crazy? OK, don't answer that last part
The two are very similar being along the lines of a standard theme park title, but each implements some key features differently and depending on what you prefer one title or the other might be more appealing to you.
SWTOR's stories are better, assuming you want stories. It also has BG's right now which Tera lacks.
But at launch they promise that Tera will have a cross server DF (love it or hate it), already has a guild banks and other guild mechanics like the praising system (not sure what we get from that) and some other small differences.
One big one for me is the combat. I've played six characters so far, and while there are some similarities, each brings its own style to the combat model. My archer had a trap system, my archer was a kiting fool, my priest seemed more like a paladin and could heal as well as slug it out.
My zerker was a blast when it unloaded huge burst damage while wearing plate and really relied on keeping your power up to block. Contrast with the lancer that comes with a built in power pool and tanking abilities galore, npc's never could get a good hit on me.
The warrior really does have to move or die, and was far too active for my liking (I'd old and slow) and so I've come to rest on the Mystic, which is a good solid hybrid healer with some interesting CC, damage abilities.
What I really like about Tera's combat compared to SWTOR is it's important to read the tells your opponent is showing and use your classes evade or block moves effectively. Whether its blocking hard with your Zerker/Lancer or blinking away with your mystic or archer, it makes the combat feel far more participatory.
With SWTOR I basically just waded in and kept button mashing DPS or heals (or alternating between them) while you and your companion burn down the mobs. With my mystic its more like, send in my tank pet, once it loses threat lose my damage on the mob and then as it powers up, blink away and re-attack.
Now all of this is only at level 16 so far, and I get a ton more skills and options as I level up so I'm really looking forward to it.
So, is Tera evolutionary like perhaps a title like GW2? (assuming it lives up to its hype). No, not at all, but if you still enjoy playing themepark style MMORPG's you could find Tera fun for a spell.

I won't, but clearly anything anyone posts is going to be their opinion and my opinion (in essence) is both games pretty much suck... word it as you will. Arguing this or similar points on the interwebz, and on this forum in particular, is probably not going to get anyone anywhere, regardless of how the opinions are presented.
So, is Tera evolutionary like perhaps a title like GW2? (assuming it lives up to its hype). No, not at all, but if you still enjoy playing themepark style MMORPG's you could find Tera fun for a spell.
I would say TERA is evolutionary from the standpoint that it takes almost all of the features of current MMOs and adds intangables like the combat, graphics/animation and polish. The whole package, in my opinion, is differernt than what else is on the market because it's all in one game. Well, minus the battlegrounds and deeper stories. At least one of those will be coming this summer, maybe more of the other as the game goes on lol.
I think GW2 is revolutionary in that sense. It's not just adding or changing things, it's also removing features to introduce others.
I don't mean to split hairs this is just how I see it.
TERA seems more like a Korean Grinder+ to me. Somewhat better than the standard fare of that type of game, and well westernized and polished.
As many people have said, the combat is great, but the world is not very immersive and questing seems to mainly consist of Kill 10 X quests. Its very much more of the same with all quests based around a hub, and when you have completed them you move onto the next hub.
After the novelty of the combat wears off, solo play is not particularly good, however group play - dungeons, BAMs, Nexus' are great.
I would say that they are on par with each other, areas where SWTOR shines, Tera is poor, and vice versa.

It's too bad that most people stereotyping TERA as an Asian grinder don't seem to have played the game much if at all. Most are honest enough about that fact though and in general it's easy to figure out which ones carry weight and which ones don't.
I'm honesty surprised at the lack of clarity and discernment people have when judging such simple things as MMOs, things most of us have been playing for years. Oh well.
I played the hell out of SWTOR, I have a level 50 and many alts. That being said, SWTOR was a great ride but one I will not be subbing too any longer. I've only played TERA for 12 levels, so I don't feel it's fair to say which is better at this point. The mechanis of TERA are a bit difficult for me whereas SWTOR was click and play. However, I am intrigued enough with TERA to continue and have preordered it. This will be my go to game until GW2 comes out.
