I know I am going to get the bash stick beat down,
but really I believe this game would be much better as a sandbox MMO rather than traditional themepark.
not saying sandbox mmo in general are better than themepark mmo,
but I feel that the themepark gameplay in this game takes away from the innovative controls of combat.
I prefer to go into the world and explore and fight, not go from quest hub to quest hub grinding out level.
hate the level grind in this game.
Level Grind > Tera's combat
^----- thats how the game seem to me.
combat of tera is the main selling point of the game, why ruin that with the traditional level/quest hub grinding?
Getting rid of the level/ quest grind, or making that optional, or even find a different way to handle progression other than level/quest hub grinding, would go a long way to making this game more fun.
I just want to explore the world, and kill stuff with players on the server.
I dont care about the quest/ hub progression.
yes I know its a Koren MMO, but cant the progression grind be something other than quest grinding and leveling up?
if leveling/quest hub grinding was optional to the player to skip all together, would that hurt you, if you like to level/quest hub grind?
whats wrong with making it totally optional?

I think so too however there is one big problem is you can't try to do 2 major changes at once. Sand box is heavly focus on its sandbox content, which would take much lot of programing to get it right, which is why there aren't many good sandbox game out there. However Tera aim is to bring a new combat system, which the programing is probably nightmare to get all the collison right. So considering the amount of money (30-35million) and time they had to make this game, realistily it is impossible to go sandbox and action combat. Woud have like it better if ti was? Hell ya. But with the recource the had it was pretty impossible. Maybe in the future when action combat programing is the norm like tab targetting than company will have more time to focus on creating a sand box rather than trying to work out the combat. Hey if Tera does will BHS next game might be an action combat sand box game, since they already have the combat down and prefected in Tera they can focus on making the sand box element of their next game w/o having to worry too much on the combat.
Also i don't think they should be able to "skip" it because if i had to work for it why don't they? Instead should provide alternative way to get there. but i never really played a true sandbox mmorpgs so if some one want to explain more it be nice.
I didn't vote because you can play differently. If you wantto do what you just posted in TERA delete all but your main story quest. Try this:
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/347475/Kickin-it-TEROldschool.html
Other than the main story quest and later other "types" (guild rep, faction rep, dungeon) other side quests are not needed if you want to explore and kill stuff as you said. You make up the xp gap, and make more money, by hunting inbetween the main story steps and of course group content when you reach that.
EME tweaked the xp per mob variable and it was one of the best things they did in IMO. Just make sure to keep your stamina up (red heart by your HP bar) at 120-135% as much as possible as it has an effect on stats and you can get low on stamina by hunting a lot. Campfires replenish it and it doesn't need to be your own, it can be another persons or big ones at rest areas.
Delete them yella quests!
Edit: One, always check the yellow quests for good rewards. Also, I would LOVE a skill-based fantasy sandbox with TERA's combat system.
Just not worth my time anymore.
Lol here we go, that's timing. I just finished to post what i think about this here http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/post/4917809/Professional-MMOer.html#4917809
My post was profetic i must say...
P.S. What sandbox or not have to do with leveling?
I don't mind tera being a themepark game but it would be nice if some company took the combat mechanics and used it in a sandbox. There is room for both, and why ruin a great sandbox concept with tab targeting.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
I can't think of many themepark MMO's that wouldn't be better as a sandbox.
Welcome to Tera.
Back then when first announced Tera developers promised lots of sandbox features.... it was even a mistery if the game was supposed to be a sandbox or a thempark.
But they were just vain promises : all in all the game structure was reduced to the WoW/EQ2 themepark system. The only "sandboxy" feature remaining is the so called "political system" (that's not even sandboxy enough).
But in the end they decided to do a classic themepark... why?
Because it works. It sells. And it's better for casual players.
Sure the sandbox game would have been more appreciated by few but the company (BlueHole Studios) needs/wants money not few happy players.
And i agree with that.
I was wondering how long it would take for one of these posts to appear.
For every game that releases there is always someone that says "This would be better as a sandbox"
IMO, you dont want THIS game to be a sandbox, you just want a decent sandbox game to play. So, go look at DFO, or MO, or wait for(ever for) AA.
I understand that there are lots of sandbox fans out there that really want to be able to sink their teeth into a AAA game, but games are either designed as sandboxed or arent. At the moment, most arent because the majority of MMO gamers prefer that (admittedly not necessarily the majority of people on this site)
Cluck Cluck, Gibber Gibber, My Old Mans A Mushroom
Every game would have been better as a sandbox...
But in all my years of MMO gaming, there has never been a sandbox that cut through, good Sandboxes are incredibly hard to make. Why? Well, because no company ever created an AAA+ fantasy sandbox MMO.
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
Just not worth my time anymore.
Who knows. It was more than 3 years ago. I can't remember it. But since i have no links for that you can ignore my post.
It was just when back then the devs talked about the future political system, guild housing, player housing and the free owpvp. They were very vague about it so it seemed like there was some kind of sandbox feel to it. But then the "politcal system" was unveiled and we were brought back to earth.
Some far off thought would be if the areas around Velika, and other cities if they have "cushion space", could expand to have player dictated housing or city additions. I guess guild housing is supposed to be dedicated per the from door but we'll see if that's the case.
Just not worth my time anymore.
Honestly, traditional themepark is dead to me. Traditional themepark, which I define as quest hums moving you from one area to the next, do not motivate me to play a game. I like stories, and Tera has a generally exceptable story (for as far as I got), but too much effort reading the quest text (yeah...me...lazy), especially when compared to what GW2, and maybe SWTOR (haven't really paid attention to the game), has to offer. It doesn't have to be that much, just some audio telling me what the point of each quest is would do a lot to fix some of my problems with it.
Some people don't like themepark, but I think themepark is generally in need to a rethinking, and can work well if effort is made to do it right...we have the technology.
Sandbox games...I am not really sure how I feel about them. TERA might be fun if my friends played, but I probably would find it boring.
I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.
The combat has spoiled me though. Any game after will be held to it. Tab targetting is for the birds lol.
Just not worth my time anymore.
TERAs targeting is not really better, just different. It makes targetting allies more interesting though.
Tab targeting isn't going to go away. GW2 is a good example of this, and of why tab targeting isn't what is making combat less fun than it could be.
I used to TL;DR, but then I took a bullet point to the footnote.
tab targeting is overated
the mmorpg will change to free aim it started with crappy games like vindictus, dragon nest, now a good AA mmo tera...gw2 use a soft tab target system..
Neverwinter same exactly the same as tera
tab target will go away sooner or later doesnt matter it will be gone
As hs been eluded to simply removing the (rather dull) themepark features (the obvious one being the quests) does not somehow elevate a game to sandbox status. You need to provide sets of tools and systems and a reason for people to continue playing. This is something that the indy devs that have tried sanboxes don't seem to get. They never get beyond the 'we have xxx skills' stage, though to be fair some do get as far as the 'we need some dort of territorial combat'. You need to have tools and systems in place that give players a reason to keep playing. The devleoper that cracks this will solve the 'end game content' problem that faces theme parks.
I found that after you leave the Island and go to the main castle, I think it is called Velkan? that Tera is like a sand box. You get a few quests in the castle and your horse and than you ride out the main gate and there are no quest givers or monsters( no monsters, that is weird), I had to ride quite a bit to find any monsters to slay and even longer to find any quest givers, so to me there is alot of exploring and it is like a sand box
The area outside Velkia is empty, no idea why but its totaly empty lol i think its like reserver for something but as of now its group spot for people to host DMs or have GvGs. Also i guess they do events there as well with that massive empty map lol.
Tera a sandbox? very few monsters and quest givers means it's like a sandbox to you?
From what i understand with GW 2 it will be a mix between tab target and fps style (Tera/darkfall style) it u shoot something somewhat towards an enemy or mob it will go towards that person and i think it also target them.
Well not monsters, but certainly quest givers! Without quest giveres the players make their own quests and fun and that is a sand box to me.
That's not sandbox at all. It's still a themepark.... and a very grindy themepark.
Archeage will have plenty of quest givers and still be a sandbox
No GW2 is tab target combine with an auto targeting. So if you face them you will automaticly target them, unless you want to tab to change target.
GW2 can also be tab targetted to. Personally I don't have an issue either way, with our without can be fun. Combat just has to evolve, combo's, team combo's could help. You can't tab at all in Tera, it's all soft or non-existant.
As for Tera shoulda been a Sanbox, well if it were a sanbox someone would say it shoulda been a themepark. So it is what it is, judge. Like=play. No Like=The search continues.
