To the OP, stop getting a wedgie over this "linear" progression. Because every single game you mentioned has linear progression. Your only example you could come up with (and it's the same for all games) was that World of Warcraft had different BEGINNING zones.
So fantastic, play your first 20-25 levels in your own, personal fancy world, but after that all those games all come to a point and meet up and all start leveling in the same area. Stranglethorn Vale? Yeah, that's where both factions met up to introduce the potential for open-world PvP, and then from there 99% of where you go is a linear progression where everyone goes down the same line. The expansions? Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm? 100% linear progression with 0 room for deviation.
So every game has a linear progression, I'm sorry that some games can shroud it from you better than others. But remove your blinders and stop being so tunnelvisioned and realize that most of what you said is easily found in every other game.
This game just finished BETA phase and is going to Day 1 of release. Think of every game you've ever played at release and tell me if it's been 100% perfect for you. TERA is from a relatively new production company, give it time and let them make the improvements that every game makes over its lifetime.
It's a solid game with some cool innovative features and a lot more depth throughout the game that people give it credit for.
WoW doesn't just give players choice from 1-25. You've a choice of where to level for the majority of the game. Even the expansion zones have some overlap. Most of the choice you have even comes from the zones created at WoW's launch. If Blizzard can do it, there's no reason why other MMORPGs can't do the same. MMORPGs need multiple progression paths in order to be successful, especially given that most MMORPGs released today are almost always devoid of endgame content for the first year or so after release. What motivation does a player have to roll an alt if the content he or she plays through is 100% the same for every new character?
Can you please tell me what is wrong with bashing a game because it does nothing to hide the fact that it is a linear grind? If all MMORPGs are linear grinds as you say, would those games not be better for disgusing the grind? SW:TOR does it with story quest, WoW does it with vehicle quests and such, and none of those games ever once told me to kill 30 mobs for a single regular quest. if other games do well to mask their grind then it can only be perceived as a negative when TERA does so little.
Secondly, you do realize that this game has been out for at least a year in Korea right? These beta events were more like stress tests and marketing hype. Yes, EnMasse added some new content and change some existing content from KTERA in time for last weekend's beta, but they cannot create entire new zones. What we saw last weekend was a year's worth of effort from BlueHole studios .

I disagree with you. The beta that was out last weekend was not a entire years worth of content, having a friend play the Korean version to this, is like night and day.
I hate to burst your bubble but wow's quests have a TON of kill x this gather y that escort z , so you need to look at your games alittle more indepth before you quote people like us who have been playing these games for 15 years or more, like myself I have played every single mmo to date, and I can count on one hand the ones I find TRULY Boring and linear.
Tera's action combat is by far the BEST i've seen in ANY mmorpg Period. Also speaking of the graphic set up, I compared Vangaurd ULTRA Settings to Tera and Ter's Graphical textures, shadows, colour mesh work perfectly, also I do find GW2 to be extremely well done as well, but when you compare a game with the Unreal engine 3 to a game like " Vanguatd " that just sounds foolish , as these sorts of things constantly evolve over time, hell I can even go so far to say that EverQuest 2 has WAY better graphics then Vanguard.
Most of the time graphics has NOTHING to do with it, take a look at Minecraft, a 8bit graphic Java Engine yet it has Millions of people playing , probably more then what WoW has on subscriptions.
But after reading ALL of your posts, you are either A, Burned out completely with MMORPGS ( Which to be completely honest I was for atime ) or B, you just find every single flaw with the game that you don't see the story , the different setting or different characters anymore but just the CORE mechanics of said game, which is a Bad way to play ANY game.
If I were you, and if you don't agree with me on this one you need to uninstall your games and hook up a console stat! You might like The Secret World then, I live close to the studio and the buzz around that game will put games like GW2 to shame, sorry it's been in the making for 10-11 years now with 10 years of content ready to set sail, with no levels no classes and only what, 7 active abilities on your UI out of 520, you really need to balance everything in that game, plus based on myth and legend. That game Screams Innovation, so that would be my advice to you, and stay clear of the Tera Forums and maybe we can discuss GW2 and The Secret World in their rightful forums together instead of causing a flood of bullshit.
I disagree with you. The beta that was out last weekend was not a entire years worth of content, having a friend play the Korean version to this, is like night and day.
Please elaborate
I hate to burst your bubble but wow's quests have a TON of kill x this gather y that escort z , so you need to look at your games alittle more indepth before you quote people like us who have been playing these games for 15 years or more, like myself I have played every single mmo to date, and I can count on one hand the ones I find TRULY Boring and linear.
I never said WoW didn't have a ton of kill/collect quests, but what I am trying to get people like you to understand is that the variety of quests in WoW FAR excedes TERA's poor effort at quest progression. Even MMORPGs like SW:TOR, which don't have the same level of variety still manage to make their kill x of y quests feel more than they are. When you have all these MMORPGs coming out in a short time that are really trying to innovate quest progression, why does TERA take such a stale, boring approach? At this point I feel like I'm repeating myself though.
Tera's action combat is by far the BEST i've seen in ANY mmorpg Period. Also speaking of the graphic set up, I compared Vangaurd ULTRA Settings to Tera and Ter's Graphical textures, shadows, colour mesh work perfectly, also I do find GW2 to be extremely well done as well, but when you compare a game with the Unreal engine 3 to a game like " Vanguatd " that just sounds foolish , as these sorts of things constantly evolve over time, hell I can even go so far to say that EverQuest 2 has WAY better graphics then Vanguard
I never complained about TERA's combat. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best I've ever seen in an MMORPG, though. It's just different. I like TERA's combat in TERA, but I wouldn't want all MMORPGs to copy the game's combat system.
Secondly, are you saying that becaues TERA runs on the Unreal 3 engine then by default it has better graphics than a game released on the Unreal 2 engine? One only needs to log into Vanguard and look at the textures on the ground, on the walls, and on the trees. I find it hard to believe that you truly feel as if TERA still has superior graphics after you examine each game piece by piece. Aside from character models and lighting effects, I haven't seen anything from TERA that looks better than Vanguard.
Most of the time graphics has NOTHING to do with it, take a look at Minecraft, a 8bit graphic Java Engine yet it has Millions of people playing , probably more then what WoW has on subscriptions.
irrelevant to the discussion
But after reading ALL of your posts, you are either A, Burned out completely with MMORPGS ( Which to be completely honest I was for atime ) or B, you just find every single flaw with the game that you don't see the story , the different setting or different characters anymore but just the CORE mechanics of said game, which is a Bad way to play ANY game.
You read all 2000 of my posts? You must have been bored today. I guess you sped through my posts as if you had slowed down and read them all in detail, you'd realize that there are some games in which I do appreciate the story and setting. SW:TOR had a great story for the first 50 levels, but after that, the story ended and the core mechanics literally slapped you in the face. As it turns out, the core mechanics weren't, at their current state, solid enough for me to warrant a subscription. I also love the world of Norrath from EQ1 and EQ2; however, the mmorpg world has evolved beyond what those games provide, and it's always frustrating for me to return to those games. While I love running around the classic gameworld, I never stay long because the fun of running around the world wears off and I'm left with antiquated game mechanics.
Secondly, are you saying that becaues TERA runs on the Unreal 3 engine then by default it has better graphics than a game released on the Unreal 2 engine? Yes, the UE3 is technically superior to U2 engine, this is so obvious that i feel stupid to have to write it.
You are comparing a game released in 2007 with one released in 2011, the first one using a older version of the same engine that uses the second and you keep saying the first is graphically superior.
What you must really understand is the difference between graphic and at style. Graphic is the technical part, let's say is the engine of a car, the art director is the car design, the body.
No one can argue with you on your preference about car design but you can't say a car with a max speed of 200km/h is faster than one with a max speed of 300 km/h.
If you want to argue that Vanguard has an art style you like more, It's fine, it's your opinion and no one can say anything on that. But if you keep saying that Vanguard has a better graphic than Tera you are delusional, I doubt even the guys at Sigil would have the gut to say something like that.
Anyway since you keep saying that graphic in Vanguard is superior to the one in Tera, it's clear that there are 2 options: A you are a troll B you have absolutely no clue of what you are talking about. In both case i'm done arguing with you cause is a waste of time.
I never complained about TERA's combat. I wouldn't go so far as to say it's the best I've ever seen in an MMORPG, though. It's just different. I like TERA's combat in TERA, but I wouldn't want all MMORPGs to copy the game's combat system.

the real-time combat is unique, but ironically, in using real time combat, the fighting actually seems slow-paced in comparison to a game like WoW. It doesn't help that at the low levels, you basically have no fear of death and no real reason to do little else than spam your attack button (which is far more boring than auto-attack combat). For this reason alone, my friend thought the game was pretty lame and said he'd never play it.
So yes, you complained about it, then you complained about the story, then about the graphic... You are just looking for something to complain about.

that only proves even more, that the op so called opinion is entirely base in Hatred. therefore shoulden't be taken seriously
I had to uninstall TERA after a day due to the stop to cast an instant was driving me insane. I devolved into a click fest with me standing in front of the mob...no smooth fluid combat to be found (As some have called it).
I like grinding, I love and still play EQ1...so that's not an issue. But make the combat stop/start clickfests and they lost me.
I guess your just not an action combat person than.
Interesting you like being self rooted in place due to this stop to cast an instant...what fluid "action" combat. I'll go play Dragon Nest for action combat, at least I can move.

I won't call him a hater, he just doesn't like the game and it's fine.
What I don't like is that he wants to present his opinions about the game as facts.
Why do people get so upset about this in particular? It's a forum, and by default these are all opinions unless linked to an official source. Do you think he's going to turn someone away from the game? You're kind of insulting the intelligence of the general population if you do. People who are into the genre are already on this forum and know what to look for, don't get stressed out.
I see TERA as a stopgap between SW:TOR/WoW and Guild Wars 2. ......
Good enough reason to me , i just dont see the reason why i shuould throw anymore subscription money to blizzard and EA/bw for screwing us this past few months.

No, i don't get upset on people complaining on the game. I never replay when someone comment on quest system or when somone says that he doesn't like the asia style or even when people say the game is boring.
I don't care what they think.
But when someone writes thing like:
"Those of you spouting "LOLZ LEVELING IN TERA IS EZ!!!" only show you don't know what your'e talking about."
or
"Everyone goes crazy of the graphics in those zones because of the view distance and because of the lighting effects."
I like to disagree.
Since 1) if he wants to point out how other people dont' know what they are talking about he should be sure of what he's talking about, 2) I know by myself why i like the graphic of this game and is not for some cheap tricks as he called them.
So in saying that i'm swayed from some cheap light tricks, he's the one insulting my intelligence.
And btw you may want to read the entire discussion, not only the last post, before criticize me.

See, I have to agree, generally I am always sub'd to one MMORPG and for many years now I just tend to try out the latest offering and play until it either no longer is fun or the next new title comes out.
So for now it's Tera and there's fun to be had in it for me.
Someday in the future I'm sure I'll move on to GW2, TSW or what have you, and I won't regret the time I spent in Tera.

Interesting you like being self rooted in place due to this stop to cast an instant...what fluid "action" combat. I'll go play Dragon Nest for action combat, at least I can move.
Expect dragon nest feel like your flailing around like a fish out of water. Many of the best action combat games, monster hunter, god eater burst, dark soul, demon soul, heck even street fighter all have root animation that comes with their fighting mechanic. Why? Because it brings depth in to combat, because of the root every move counts, your not just spaming skill and hoping you hit something because if you miss there are real consquence to deal with. As you see in dragon nest you pretty much just watch your camra flail as you aim for stuff at random. Even dragon nest have some root animation after some skills and attacks.
I don't know Mardukk - I kind of see where you're coming from, but not really.
How many warriors do you know that go around using their most powerful attacks while running in circles at full speed? Sorry but it's just a silly combat system when you have melee characters just circle-strafing around a person jumping up and down like a little monkey.
TERA emphasizes positioning and strategy with the attack animations. You want to use that big powerful attack? Ok, you better make sure it connects or you will leave yourself exposed. How is this any different from real life? Look at UFC and Boxing, throwing the big punches leaves you vulnerable for a counter-attack - That's just the way balanced fighting works. Risk vs Reward - Not just button mashing and jumping up and down non-stop.
@rex: I said that Tera has one of the best graphic in the mmorpg world and I stand by it, that doesn't mean is the absolute best, there are other really good engine out there technically speaking. Artistically everyne can have differente taste.
I dont know about the exact details on which mmorpg has technically better graphics, but I have to say TERA is on my top 3 mmorpgs when it comes to pleasing my eyes with the graphics. Like Conan might have "better" graphics but I find them a bit boring, and I didnt really like them. So yeah, I dont care which game has best graphics, what ever it is that TERA has, pleases my eyes very much. TERA has quite right amount of fantasy in their art style imo.
What comes to the "grind" - I often dont like "the grind" in mmorpgs, but that's usually because the gameplay is the good old "stand still and press hotkeys in apropriate order" while in TERA as the slayer, the class I played most in beta, I moved constantly and not just because I like to move (like many do in tab target games, move without any real purpose in combat) but I moved because it's big part of that class combat. Here's what I told a friend of mine "TERA feels quite grindy overall except some delivery quests, but I dont mind because the combat is fun, if I dont get another kill 10 quest, then I'll just set off to the world and kill 20 for the heck of it" ... I dont know how long it will feel as much fun, but at least now it does, and I barely scratched the surface of the potential of my chosen class.
I see TERA as a stopgap between SW:TOR/WoW and Guild Wars 2. ......
Good enough reason to me , i just dont see the reason why i shuould throw anymore subscription money to blizzard and EA/bw for screwing us this past few months.
It never was that I disliked TERA. I just don't see TERA having long term viability in the face of upcoming MMORPGs like GW2, TSW, and even Mists of Pandaria. It already has a bit of an uphill battle as is with it being a Korean-based game with relatively little hype surrounding it anyway, but it just doesn't do enough unique or interesting to distinguish itself as being as to GW2 as WoW was to Aion.
As for the combat, it's amusing that the guy cherrypicks posts from my post history to prove a point. He didn't include the post I made after that where I talked about how the combat does improve as you level up, and I never complained about combat in this thread. Of course I also talked about how I got bored with it not long afterwards, but that just goes to show you that this game's combat probably won't hold everyone's interest forever. If you strip away TERA's combat, you strip away probably the biggest reason people are excited about the game. The people that are gushing over the combat remind me, to use another example from Vanguard, of all those people who post threads here about how Vanguard is the greatest game they've ever played, yet they've only been playing for like two days and have only reached level 15. We tend not to hear a lot from players who are level 30-40 and for good reason. Once they get further into the game, they realize the game doesn't have the population to sustain the sort of content the game provides. Progression becomes a serious pain. Similarly, you have all these people saying what a great combat system TERA has, but sooner or later, players will start taking the combat system for granted and then it won't be so special anymore. What then? Given that I wrote a long essay in this thread detailing exactly what I did not like about TERA, if I truly felt combat was an issue, I think I would have talked about it here. Oppinions can change in a couple months.
I stand by what I said about the graphics. I don't care whether someone says a game's graphics are better by default simply because it runs on a more updated engine. Art style has nothing at all to do with lighting, texture quality, shadows, or even the blades of grass on the fields.I know what my eyes can see, and unless I cancel my pre-order, I'll be sure to post screenshots of those areas I was talking about. Some areas in TERA look amazing (better than Vanguard or AoC) and others look plain to just bad. I've already said as much, but it's wildly inconsistant yet typical for a Korean MMORPG. I just can't expect people who spend 80% of their time in the TERA section of the boards to understand.

Just look at this: http://www.wowwiki.com/Zones_by_level

just that, your opinion.
none of the cons, you listed. is a gamebreaking issue to me. in fact single one of your cons. is a pro to me
my biggest worry about Tera, is the company in charge of the EU version. (frogster) is like having a starving lion babysitting a child.

Interesting you like being self rooted in place due to this stop to cast an instant...what fluid "action" combat. I'll go play Dragon Nest for action combat, at least I can move.
And btw you may want to read the entire discussion, not only the last post, before criticize me.
well said. Every one of your posts has been concise and to the point. Can't say the same for others
what i got out of this...
they have great artists.
you bought the game and are enjoying it for a few hours every day.
thats fantastic. glad you got your moneys worth.
