How to make TERA a B2P for yourself

Reas43Reas43 Member Posts: 297

It took me three readings, frm begginning to end of both of these Q&As explaining this Chronoscroll thing before it really sunk in.  The more I think about it the more I like it.

Point of the post.  if you are an efficient gamer you can play this game, effectively, as a B2P while the game remains as a P2P.  Just buy the "box" which includes one month, play smart, save or generate gold, then buy your monthly subscriptions through in-game currency at the AH.  No RL money, but in-game gold.

The scrolls remain at a fixed price of a normal monthly fee, so the buyer spends $15 for one, posts it on the AH at whatever the market price dictates at the moment, with price fluctuations depending on supply and demand, makes in game gold "legally", without being exposed to scams yada yada and someone else out there gets the benefits of the already paid for month by using in game currency.  And if you are a smart MMO player that generally doesnt present much of a challenge.

It's essentially, the same effect the lifting of Prohibition had on Chicago gangsters.  By allowing alcohol to be sold in a controlled fashion it undercut the illegal market.   All of this initiative originally to discourage gold sellers, but to me.....I see the game turning into an F2P after the first month pretty much, like GW2 without a cash shop.    O.o

The concept has been executed before and it seems like it's turning into quite the trend for more and more MMOs, however, I personally dislike the concept. Effecient gamer or not, they're not turning it into a B2P with this feature.

Moreso, there is always SOMEONE having to spend the cash to get the item. I suppose the point you were trying to make is that in your eyes, it's B2P for everyone not participating in dumping cash into the game. Therefore, you're not supporting the game directly, but relying on others to financially support the company outside of box sales, and relying on others to dictate the price of YOUR subscription.

I personally would rather spend a flat flee for a subscription than have the playerbase dictate how much ingame currency this month of gametime is going to run me.

It's a nice feature, people will make use of it, but it's currently being blown out of proportion with threads like this. And you're not doing it intentionally, but really, stop and think about it for just a second.

If it works at all like it does in EVE thetypical MMO player will not be able to earn enough gold to pay for his subs regularly, and certainly not at lower levels.

But who knows, you might be right.

Oh sorry man, I just hadn't seen it before.  I read in the Q&A thety got the idea from EVE - but that they're not adding extra costs, just the $15.  I just started salivating because I usually Im the kind to play  crafting and AH.   But yea I can imagine for most people it might not be the same.  I guesss if you have in game gold, you have the option to play the game with in game gold.  which is better than not having the option. at all.

Anyway outside of EVE and this what other games are adopting this?  I'm not an EVEite so it was news to me.

If the west keeps the same economy as it is in ktera then players will be able to make tons of gold at end game, but at the same time their are lots of gold sinks to spend it on.  If you control you spending and play the market wisely you should be able to buy the scrolls with a little effort on your part.

Yes. We will have to see how much the scrolls will cost but i doubt you will gather enough gold just by casual playing.

If you want to buy the chronoscroll you will have to grind for gold: which will make it basically a job and not a game. A silly thing in my opinion.

It's more like a way to legalize gold sellers and let Bluehole make some extra profit at the same time.

I thought that too until I realized that the person buying the scroll is not paying for their month so it evens out.  The scrolls are designed as an alternative to buying gold from RMT sellers.  I would think the people buying gold are casual gamers so in comparison the ones getting buying the scrolls are most likely more hardcore.

I would figure a free month of gametime should be worth a pretty penny in respect to the effort involved.  Not x2 but maybe x1.25.  If you had 40 hours a week to play and you spend 10 of them grinding instead of other activites to play for free would it be worth it?

Just not worth my time anymore.

Not hard if you have a guild of 300 people pooling money together. I know i made well over 60g possiably 100g if i didn't spend any money on skill/glyphs and i barely use the market. so not hard even just for 30 people to give all their gold to 1 guy and have it lol.

The intention is to limit/restrict illegal RMT.  Illegal RMTers will be dissuaded to spend time on TERA if they gross too little.  They would rather focus on WoW and others for greater monetary gain.  There will still be illegal RMT, but very limited compared to other MMOs.
