just remind yourself not to get caught in hype. wait for games to be released and evaluate them throughly and never listen to large review sites (they are paid off). ideally you should play a trial before buying.
remember that everytime you support a crap mmorpg financially, you are giving investors/devs the go ahead to make more crap mmorpgs.

Only game I regret buying was Vanguard which i did blindly. Usually I research my games quite a lot before buying. And boy was it bad. Should've waited for 2 months for the free trial.
Other than that I've dodged many bullets: Aion, Xsyon, Fallen Earth, Rift, Mortal Online, Darkfall, Global Agenda, Tabula Rasa... Not all of those are bad, but many of them are just too generic with one or two gimmicks.
I did buy WAR and was rather happy with the three weeks I got from it. No chance of playing past the first month tho.

Got caught in the SWTOR hype. Waste of money! Reluctant to pre-order anything since lol
Sound advice op;)
The only time I have pre-orderd is Sw:tor. Got three months enjoyment out of it before I got bored and did beta test first, so got no problem with that.
My only to this day blind hype purchase was War. Never again people! Never again!
It is kinda like going to the movies.
You generally know what to expect via the trailers/actor/director etc.
Sides, last I checked, a night out is more expensive than a $60 game anyway so who cares if I buy 1-2 crap a month? :P

I never do ... and yes, I am happy with Vanguard.
You are correct that gaming is, relatively speaking, a very cheap hobby. However, even if you can personally afford to "waste" $100 or so a month, as the OP said this type of purchasing is bad for ALL gamers and hurts our hobby. If a company can sell a crappy product and turn a good profit, there is no incentive to make a better one.
Of course, you have every right to buy any game you want! But do realize, that large numbers of people purchasing "bad" games is the main reason bad games keep getting released.
Gaming tastes are different actually.
I found Alpha Protocol to be one of the best game I ever played. I've finished it 7 times and I'm still finding new branches/dialog/content.
You know the metacritic score of that game? 63/100
I'm a gamer and I will always try to support people that make games.
Just remember that companies do not try to make a 'bad' game, sometimes stuff happens.
Like KOTOR2 - Awesome game but only half finished.

its not about money. its about ensuring we dont get shit games in the future.
you buy crap games -> you lose some cash, no biggie
you buy crap games -> devs keep making crap games knowing that you will buy them
also; i generally spend less that $60 on a night out.
i dont want this to become a thread in which we decide whether certain games are bad or good. if you like a game buy it, im just saying that you should make sure you like it..
ive noticed lots of people here that complain about the state of the genre but purchase all the non innovative games they dont like.
1. You need to tell me which places you go to hang out cause sub-$100 for a night out is my friends buying everything for me that night.
On topic, you've actually hit the nail on the head. For the vast majority of people, they are happy to buy what is coming out of the MMO space right now. Those who 'complain' are the minority when it comes to the MMO playerbase.

Honestly, this doesn't work.
I bought SWG, Tabula Rasa, Fallen Earth, Shadowbane and a few other really good games, but it hasn't really helped those companies or developers to make more good games.
WoW was crap and I didn't buy it, SWTOR was crap and I didn't sub to it, but i somehow doubt it's going to prevent those developers from making more crap.
As someone pointed out, an MMO is a pretty frackin' cheap entertainment option. A single player game - even a good one like mass effect - has under 30 hours of playtime. One or two nights out cost more than an MMO with a month's sub. In my experience, even MMOs that i didn't like and didn't end up buying, still provided me with at least 50-100 hours of good entertainment.
Plus, there is always a chance that a developer will actually improve and make better stuff. Turbine made DDO which sucked, but then they made the awesome LoTRO. Cryptic is vice versa, they made the awesome CoH but then failboated Star Trek. You never know. The only thing you DO know is that the more developers are out there making MMOs, the higher the chance that one of them makes a good game. I may not like WoW, but heck, even i would curious to see what MMO Blizzard makes next.

I blind hype buy all the time ( currently TSW has my money) I dont see the issue. If i dont buy game X I will buy game Y. Ill admit I have LOOOWWW standards and will spent three times as long enjoying a game as you whi..err discriminating shoppers. In short... I am the guy ruining MMORPGs..i buy/play them all in a constant migration. I am the guy these companies are looking for...
..but Im happy being that guy. You the OP feel that players like me are furthering the destruction of our mutual hobbies. Fine I get your point of view but I do disagree. I believe my money is furthering the cause. Also I sow my money far and wide equally to all the game companies. Hyperbole? A little but my list of games played is loong my list of games returned to is almost as long..but not quite
so, yes..do buy crap games..its the only way they can get better
I to this day wonder what Auto Assult would have been like with 6 years of development..guess ill never find out, but one can dream

But... But.. It was 50% off on steam...

Damn, never really put much thought into that...the amount of money the can throw at their next MMO *droool*
Wait..what was that thing called...Titan? nm, by the time someone responds I woulld have already looked it up

I STILL have LA Noir that I got from the steam sale 2 years ago, NOT INSTALLED let alone launched. >.>
I am actually on a game music binge right now. I am buying games purely for their soundtracks on GOG.
Total annihilation, Age of Wonders, Ground Control, Neverwinter nights etc etc. At least they are not 'crap'. :P

Honestly, it works.
It just requires a tad of self control.
Nice attempt - but it won't work of course. Too many people seem to have an MMORPG addiction and are excited that a new game comes up - it doesn't really matter what the game is and what features there are.
It's funny how many of the GW2 fans have been SWTOR fans just half a year ago. In fact some of them even made posts like "innovative", "changes the way we play MMOs", "makes Blizzard nervous" on the SWTOR forums 6 months ago. They're now making the same posts about GW2.
I reckon there are a number of players in the MMORPG genre that really want to be excited, they want to be all hyped up. It's almost as if getting all excited and hyped-up is more fun to them than actually playing the game.
I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.
I just wish that they did not use their excitement to attack other games. If GW2 is going to be good it is going to be good because of the game not because of the forum hype war over it. Yeah the hype war might be people to buy it but means nothing if the game sucks and people quickly leave. I would say to everyone try every game you can out there. Find the ones you like and screw the rest. I would never tell someone not to try a game for themselves.
How can you be buying a crap game if it comes with a Lifetime Subscription ?
MAGA
TERA and TSW come with lifetime subs?
Hell yeah, I recently played through AoW again, this time as The Keepers. They don't make games like that anymore. Music, gameplay and awesome storylines. When I finished the game I looked up all the different story arcs you can get.
OP has sound advice, but I think I speak for a lot of guys here when I say we've been burnt once but never again. For me it was AoC. You may as well wait for release and give the game 1-3 months to 'marinate' so to speak.
O_o o_O
Nobody tries to make a "bad" game, but far too often there is a lack of effort to make a "good" game.
This happens when we get regurgitated content that we've seen a billion times over, or a half-assed product relying on a cheap gimmick and hype to catch a sale
A half-assed game thats marketed well will almost always sell more copies than a good game no one ever knows about. Publishers know this, and they will take advantage of it.
LA Noire is a great game. The only thing that you could complain about are consolish controls but you play it for the story most of the time. No need to mention it in the crap game thread.
Tera and TSW are crap games? Not in my book.
In fact, while I am a frequent poster bemoaning the lack of originality in MMO's these days, I buy them regularly despite that.
Why? Because I stopped looking for absolutes. I find that almost every MMORPG out there is fun for at least a month or two, so they are worth playing.
I stop my subs of course, figuring that will send a message to Dev's that what they built didn't hold my interest. Perhaps what they get up front from me and others is enough, if so, then we'll not likely see much changing any time soon.
But perhaps one day a Dev will consider building a game that might hold my attention for more than a month and we'll get something better.
Until then I don't mind paying and playing what they are serving us right now.
And no, WOW and SWTOR were not crap games either, be reasonable folks.

Most MMOs do have that "Why'd you leave me!? I thought we had something special!" survey when you cancel a sub.
I wonder how many people actually take the time to fill them out.
Of that number, I wonder how many people do so without flaming the devs.
